Settlement Walls do nothing?

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 2:15 am

So I just saw my first attack on one of my settlements and there were super mutants and mutant hounds spawning in the middle of my settlement. They didn't even have to come through my heavily fortified entrance area, they just appeared and started attacking people.

This leaves me wondering why I even built walls in the first place. I mean the one guy says "how about building some defenses, WALLS or something?" So I thought, "Great, I'll build some walls", and now I feel like I wasted hours and hours thinking how to build the entrances and fortify my settlement and then building them. They do NOTHING! what a waste of time...

So now I feel a little cheated in that here I am playing this settlement building game (with little to no tutorial or help), I thought I was having fun, but now I find out that the game doesn't work that way. Not sure how you justify this as being fun.

Just to be clear, walls don't keep attackers out of your settlement, and those heavily fortified, cool and well designed and thought out entrances are pretty worthless too, not sure how to approach this now, but it's looking less and less fun. To protect my settlements I now need to figure out how to defend against the game engine instead of actual enemies, breaks the immersion terribly...

Every time I've been attacked they've always spawned in or around the middle of the settlement.

Yea it's annoying. I just got done telling a group of people in a chat room that this is basically what happens, so build your defense's around whatever area is most likely the heart of your settlement. I hope they fix this.

I made a circular elevated platform in the middle of my settlement and surrounded it in a circle with turrets. It hasn't been tested yet but I'm hoping it works for when they spawn inside my area.

The spawning in this game is total crap. Bethesda should be smart enough to realise that's a bad move for a survival themed game.

Well that's disappointing, my settlement hasn't been attacked yet but it looks like i've wasted a good few hours building up walls and defenses around sanctuary and red rocket. Thanks bethesda.

when my settlement at the Drive-In got attacked, the raiders spawned on the hills and came down. Which would have been great, but thats the one side I didn't build any walls on lmao

If this is so for everyone (not just a bug for some), then it absolutely needs to be fixed ASAP. If not fixed, I would consider it a dealbreaker. Because the game is pointedly the Main Quests PLUS the Settlement system. Having 30-50% of the game bugged could/would/should lead to calls for refunds and boycotts. [At least with me, of my 53 hours of play so far, at least 20 of those has been in building settlements. I hate to think all that time was wasted because none of my defenses are located where they will do the most good.]

I think the walls should be destructible so the raiders have to break through the walls to get in. Maybe that can be put in with a mod?

thats a bit stupid

enemies shouldnt just spawn inside the towns.

they should spawn/gather outside and then have to fight their way into the town/settlement

otherwise as others have said it defeats theb object of carefully placed defenses.

Did they come over the bridge at Sanctuary? If that's the only place they spawn then it's not so bad...

At the Covenant they spawn outside by the lake like directly across from the front door. Although, they might not have enough room to spawn inside that place. It was't large to begin with and now I have it packed with 6 shops, all workstations, and a total of 12 settlers.

I think they screwed up when they made Red Rocket its own Settlment zone, and moved the spawn point but messed up where they put it.

My experience so far was in Sanctuary. 2 attacks, both spawned basically right in the center of town. Both times super mutants and mutant hounds. My guards were all down by the bridge, so my settlers got beat up pretty good.

Lots of me running around by the bridge going "Who's firing in there?" "Where are these things?"

I felt like I was in an Aliens movie "There comin' outta the walls! Their in the g--damn walls and floor man!"

Yep.

I have my main base at Red Rocket and just happened to be there when I heard my turrets firing, there were 3 Super Mutants that spawned inside

my compound.

I've had 4 attacks on my settlements so far. The only one I've walled off has been my Co-op settlement, and when that was attacked they came from the direction of the bridge (where my only entrance is). Sanctuary was attacked once, and they came from the north of my settlement. The Castle was attacked, and they came from the diner direction. And finally I had a large pack of ghouls attack my boat house, and they came from the north. So far, all attackers spawned outside my settlements zoning.

For those with attackers spawning inside their settlement, it might be a bug or glitch in the programming they didn't catch. Hopefully they'll patch it if they can and no other issues will arise.

I've played this game for about 24 hrs and have yet to have my settlement attacked. Is there something you do to trigger the attacks?

Once the GECK is out, we will be able to see (and therefore move) the spawn points. It will easily get modded.

EDIT : I hear that if your settlement is heavily defended relative to the number of settlers and its food production then you are safer. Raiders are not stupid and will then only attack very rarely.
