Settlements and building.

Post » Sat Mar 19, 2016 5:54 pm

I think it's safe to say that even beyond Wasteland Workshop there will be more settlement stuff coming down the pike. I'd also be surprised if building systems don't become a staple in all Bethesda games from here on out, given Howard's comments quoted in http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/03/17/fallout-4-director-workshop-popularity-was-the-biggest-surprise-for-bethesda article.

Personally, I'm okay with that. I've had a lot of fun with the settlement system. :)

Also, the comment about how much content is in Far Harbor is worth noting. More than Dawnguard, less than Shivering Isles. I remember the main quest of Shivering Isles, but I'm having a hard time remembering how much side content there was.

I just really want to be able to build camp fires and fire pits, or even large bonfires. At the very least, something that can go underneath the roasting cooking station.

Me too. We need some non-electric lighting. Can build a computer terminal, but not a lantern or a fire barrel.

Building in settlements is still buggy but can be fun. More to make can't hurt.

Settlement management on the other hand can still be a nightmare. That really needs serious attention.

The game doesn't need more settlement items/stuff to do/build etc....It needs to be fixed! After it becomes 'stable' then they can add all the stuff they want, for what is the point giving the 'player' x, y, z to build or tinker with when the whole settlement happiness, resource, attack system is FUBAR?

Unless of course you are one of the lucky 'few' who don't seem to have any issues with the settlement system - would actually love to see 'proof' of this but it seems rather scarce - hell even the YT content provider Gopher has had issues with false reporting on the old pip boy (think it was resource numbers in Tenpiness and the castle).

So yeah - get the existing [censored] sorted and then add more - simple really :goodjob:

Good to see some more settlement updates in the next two DLCs. But what I would really like to see is to make settlements more strategic and purposeful (instead of fending off the occasional, and senseless random attack ).

I want to fend off an invasion of super mutants, Enclave, ghouls, Caesar's Legions, robots, mirelurks, giant ants, whatever (or all of them!). They swoop in from one side of the map and overrun a bunch of settlements, and its your job as the General to hold them off and take it back.

Of course add to this settlers that can die (but also level up). And the invading forces will have to be more powerful and have tactics to defeat settlements (like Enclave PA infiltrating with air drops, or suicide super mutants that can blow up walls, or wall climbing ants, etc.)

There are a lot of things they could do with settlements in future games that weren't implemented here, but what we got is a lot of fun. I was actually surprised that there wasn't some advantage to building more of them for the Minutemen, for example. And I have a feeling some content was planned but never implemented. Places like University Point seem like they were supposed to be more. At any rate I've been spending time rebuilding settlements post completion of the main plot. My big complaint is the lack of diversity, really. We have tons of choices for wooden walls that are full of holes but only a few if you want something that actually looks solid. It also seems like the game offers a lot more wood then steel, meaning it pushes your construction in certain directions if you are building a lot of settlements simply based on availability of certain materials over others.

I'm in the minority here, but the settlement system feels like such a chore to me. One of the entire factions revolves around it, but I just can't get myself to enjoy the repetitive slog of maintaining settlements. I'm a Fallout fan for the exploration, combat, and roleplaying. Even if thousands of more items were added to the list, I don't think it would change my perspective on the idea.

That being said, I'm glad it's not a required feature or anything. The great thing about Bethesda games is that they don't force you to do anything you don't want to.

All Bethesda games are a terrible chore. That's what makes them one of, if not the top, most popular gaming companies in the world.

I would quite frankly say they blow away all other gaming studios. Srsly what studio has TWO hugely successful franchises they are working on?

Agreed. Someone made a comment in another post about "this is only good for people who like the sandbox aspect of this game." And I was like, Duh,.. that's the reason we play Bethesda titles. They seem to be the only major game dev dedicated to big sandbox aspects. Others just seem to dabble in it. But I do wish they would focus more on bugs that make it less annoying, and anything to make perimeter defenses easier to construct would also be welcomed.

THIS THIS THIS THIS !!!!!!

I want to give a focal point for my settlers to sit around outside when they are not working. A Fire Pit would be perfect in to more 'rural' settlements.

Or just some torches using wood, cloth and oil. Light them up in a campfire and place them on walls (somehow, not sure how). If they get wet with rain, just let them dry and light them up again.

Lol

That build is very similar to mine, I've bricked up the broken end of the house and its all hidden from view. I use the car park as a military outpost.

Settlements are a terrible addition. I hate them. I'm level 53, have nearly 15 days on my character and only just popped a cap in that cereal bloke! My son is still out there somewhere, there's all these factions wanting me to do stuff as well as the hundred random things I'm meant to be doing for every man and his dog. But all I want to do IS BUILD MORE STUFF!!! The drive-in needs a bar and a hospital. Need another shop at Sanctuary set up. Pretty sure the Slog needs to be turned into a spa resort. The list is endless, I just want to go do some missions dammit! Even when I do go sort out someone's problems, I spend more time lugging junk home to build more stuff than I do anything else. As everything apart from folders, subway tokens and burnt magazines (anything else?) can be turned into...things I just can't leave ANYTHING behind. Hmmm 6 pencils, a cooking pot and a clipboard, I think I'll build a wall!

There's three things I'd like to see with building in settlements:

1. The height restriction removed, 'cause let's face it, in some places it makes a lot more sense to build upwards than outwards.

2. The ability to be able to build underground.

3. The ability to build something that actually protects you during a radiation storm.

Pmsl, I'm sure this game is breading a mixture of OCD and hording in all of us, I just HAD to have the ability to fast travel when overcumbered lol.

That's awesome, I love watching the overkill it's the only way to go.

I'm actually surprised by how much I like the settlement building. There's already some great mods out for that part of the game. The DLC and mods that come out with the GECK can only make settlements cooler. I'm looking forward to it :)

BOS vertibird pilots must be getting so sick of me. "That bloody Knight wants another lift back to Red Rocket, chuck out everything we don't need cause we're about to be carrying maximum load soon!" "Oh no sarge, not another load of coffee cups and surgical trays!"

My biggest wish is that we somehow will be able to clean up settlements and remove dirt piles, junk and such. It's kind of wierd that the instincts and moral of human beings has changed so much that they don't bother cleaning up anymore. The nesting instincts vanished in the radiation wapors?

Am I right?

They need to impliment intersecting objects. I'm tired of seeing red for no reason because an object is 1 inch too close to another object yet it's still 5 feet away from that object. And they need to give us more items to build that are ALREADY in the game...... Someone mentioned firepits.... I never understood why they gave us a roasting station.... what were we going to use to roast? air?! so stupid.... if you're going to half ass something.. try not to make it TOO obvious....
