Settlements&Homes - Bethesda to read

Post » Mon Nov 30, 2015 10:01 pm

I seem to wasting so much time in Fallout 4 with homes/settlements. I recently bought Home Plate as I wanted to be away from the Settlers for a bit. It gets a little overbearing surrounded by mobs of glitchy settlers not to mention they tend to run off in your Power Armor if you've forgotten to remove the Fusion Core. Any way, I spent a fair bit of time collecting mats and fast travelling back and forth to Home Plate, all done up and as good as possible without the extra workshop utilities. I then find out that you're unable to move your followers there, even though it seems there's a place for Dogmeat on the roof. Well that's it for poor Dogmeat and my trusty Butler, So I decide to move on and try Croup Manor and here is where it get's interesting...

I spent hours trying to get that building looking halfway decent, the walls and floors dont clip well to the broken interior/exterior of Croup Manor and it was frustrating to do, takes the enjoyement out of it. I did however manage to get it completely patched, furnished, and fenced in within the day and I was quite happy with my finished piece. I moved my top followers over from Castle and my Collectables too. I then find my companions cant walk up the damn stairs :-( .There goes my lovers embrace buff.. (my bedroom is at the top lol). Thats 2 areas painstakingly repaired and furnished with limited use not to mention Sanctuary has an old drug addict stuck in my roof demanding chems and the settlers seem stuck between fences, on the roofs and behind doors most of the time, that makes 3 with strange pathing issues or not fully useable.

(Sorry it seemed I needed to have a rant for Bethesdas benefit, I just hope they take note that the building and settlements idea was great but poorly implimented)

Back to Croup, anyone else have this issue with the stairs at the Manor? Any work arounds?. I think I might just ignore the settlements and houses for a bit and go back to the quests.

Im sure they are aware, how much they bother to patch that up I wont speculate... I love getting back to the house I built myself in sanctuary a nice 5 story affair That I purposely made sure to put doorways on all entrances.. and I have a pack brahmin from a supply line provisoner freaking out and raming itself back and forth because its too dang big to get out a doorway.. Making me wonder just who the hell the prankster is and how did they get it in there?

Stairways.. ugh I cant even walk up those dang things that well so I build them along a wall or double wide build them. The ones without the base & top floor foundation attached. The long straight section I find I can sink into the ground or float through the upper level. Then as soon as I can get up smoothly I let it go.. My upper level is like a indoor mini mall for traders but each morning even they have trouble getting up stairs. I find them in various spots inside (like directly under their trade box station).

However I find if I sleep one hour the traders seem to warp up to their spots. So maybe try sleeping one hour then see if your partner is up there and sleep a second hour to get the lovers embrace benifit. Or its moving your bedroom to ground level

I have my doubts that bethesda will bother adding anything unless money can be made. Patches for bugs and glitches maybe, but anything more than that is doubtful

Do you leave your keys in your car and expect nobody to take your vehicle? :)

Hey I did it once too. Learned the hard way I guess. Worse thing was it was a provisoner and I caught the guy heading outa town with it.. I striped him out of everything I could and took his his weapon. I expect him to live a while pondering the error of his ways.. I will just hope the Atom Cats dont catch up to me and do the same!!

Hopefully modders redo all the settlement houses in the game to make them more realistic.... meaning proper roofs that are not smashed in, shingles, siding with paint or some protection. Unprotected wood quickly rots away and to think humans would live in the structures they have them living in here in this game... would not happen. Carpentry skills are the most basic skills we have... we were building proper houses with proper moisture protection hundreds of years ago and somehow now we're living in places with busted in roofs, no windows, half open wood walls, etc... would not happen.

A tent provides better moisture protection than all these places except for a very few.. the small concrete building at the drive in theater, Red Rocket's brick building, and a few others.

Too much reality and we have to ask if unprotected sheet steel would even still exist.. Never mind packs of ciggarettes, bottles of wonder glue or cans of pork and beans.. Sugar bombs.. No way guys. We have the know how to build gas powered generators okay.. Good thing we researched that before the big war, but gasoline.. Where does that come from? I have cracked open 30 year old untouched cans of paint and trust me there is no real salvage value. Would you eat a 200+ year old salisberry steak?

Sometimes reality and sci-fi future based games just dont mix..

Screwdrivers that can be salvaged for just as much steel as full blown safes. I'm guessing the protagonist wasn't in the engineer corps.

LOL! Yeah thanks for pointing that out its been heavy on my mind that a tin or alluminum can weighing .1 pounds meaning I can carry 10 (I think before I hit said pound) provide 2 units of steel or alluminum yet a hub cap weighs like 5 pounds and has only an extra screw to add as lootable material. It seems the more it weighs the less its worth in real salvage value.. However this dont ruin the game for me just adds an extra layer of depth I learn to deal with.. Dang straight it sure makes old food cans seem worth more as loot then half the other stuff out there.

Just another reason we have to allow for a break from reality on game designers.

They better be for developing DLCs. People are buying season passes left and right because we were promised there would be some.

The whole settlers thing has been a trial for me. At the start you don't have enough and they are slow to show up. Then wham, you got more than you can deal with. No built in way to manage them. You have to fiddle around with special outfits so you know who is doing what in the settlement.

Then there is the issue of them getting into my stuff or what I consider to be my private area. They just move in like they own the place sleep in my bed, etc. I am on my third character and I have decided this play through I am going to base out of the Red Rocket and there will never be a settler there. Just me and my companions will occupy it this time. For some reason the companions are not a problem like the common rabble settlers are.

The whole settlement building thing feels like it was released unfinished. There are prefab building sections with no way to add walls to them in odd shaped places. There is a metal prefab with a rounded roof edge that is missing a wall section for that rounded area for example. Then there are the wall sections with door ways that don't fit in with some of the other wall sections because they are too tall.
