Settlements - How to make settlers happy

Post » Tue Mar 08, 2016 10:53 pm

What are the clues that settlers want/need something from you?

For instance, I know of these:

- "We could sure use some more beds." ; "People are complaining about the bed situation." = make more beds

- "I'm just so hungry all the time." ; "You know what a good day is? One that ends without an empty stomach." = plant food or give settlers more food items & put down a cooking station

- "I haven't had clean fingernails in weeks." = set up a separate bathroom area & put down a bathtub, soap, a dishrag, a metal bucket, and some Abraxo (make sure it's sheltered, too -- no open sky or open to a room, because they don't like that)

- "My feet have blisters." = put in a medical station

- "We could use some water." ; "The crops need water, you know." ; "I'm just so thirsty." - put down a water pump that puts out at least 30 units

- "It's too dark around here." = put in more lights

- "I'm always jumpy." = put in more defenses & arm the settlers better

- "Work all day, never changes." = put down some form of entertainment

What are others clues that you know of?

Speaking to that last one (entertainment), at various settlements, I've put down:

- a pool table, rack, 4 pool sticks, and gotten 1 of each ball (cue + all 15 balls)

- a magazine rack, and put in almost every magazine I've picked up (rather than sell it)

- tossed down random Boston Bugle newspapers and Piper's paper

- a set of bowling pins (in a triangle formation) and 2 bowling balls

- a basketball hoop and a basketball

- a baseball diamond with the 4 mats (in a diamond shape), 2 bats & 4 balls & 8 gloves

- a kickball diamond with with the 4 mats and 2 kickballs

- a chessboard

- a Blast Radius board game

No one plays with any of it or reads those papers. And settlers STILL complain of nothing to do but work, work, work all day long. Like they don't see the entertainment I provide them. What am I doing wrong?

Stores and junkyard dogs can make them happier than 80%. But even with 100% happiness they still complain. They whine even if they do not have any job.

They are not programmed to do anything else apart from work, sleep, go to bar and whine. :)

Though sometimes (rare) they can be happy after attack, proud of themselves. May be it was supposed to happen each time after successful defence, but it does not work this way.

I've caught a few settlers reading Grognak or one of the other magazines.

At Dinnertime. I placed the rack near the Resturant.

That's a thing?

Edit: that may explain some Happiness discrepancies between some of my settlements. For a few of them, I opted not to scrap an existing bathroom area (Sunshine Tidings Coop, for example).

I built a cooking station near the restaurant. So one of the settlers often pretends to be cooking during their dinner/supper . I guess, I need to add a magazine rack too.

Sometimes i hear them whistle or hum a happy tune to themselves.

However some of the settler lines aren't relevant to their happiness.

They just say things.

One of my annoyances is they tell me i should check out the settlement run by robots and the one run by ghouls.

When in fact that is no longer the case.

They also tell me something has to be done about these raider attacks, when they have just whipped the raiders butts.

After an attack they thank me for the help when all i have done is watch them thrash the raiders without my character lifting a finger.

Re happiness, if the basics are taken care of it's pretty easy to get the happiness up.

An excellent thread in the hints subforum on the subject.
