Sounds like you need to make a mod that makes it more better with narrative design and mechanics. Let us know when you get that all set up and we can play it.

I'm not doing mods. I don't use them (too much hassle for too little gain) so I don't make them either.
According the game stats, I've been playing for 4 days, 7 hours.
I'm betting 3 days, 2 hours has been dedicated to settlement building.
I enjoy it, completely forgetting the fact I'm supposed to be finding my kid.
its not essential seeing as if you build up a settlement to have walls all round the area with manned guard posts and turrets somehow settlers still get kidnapped.
As much fun as it is to make a base look well defended it seems to have no effect on that sort of scenario and is in fact just for looks.
I personally dont give a rats ass about my settlers wellbeing and will for the most part ignore any help requests from Garvey as the quests are always the same repetitive scheme.
all i bother doing is off load all my loot from the Gunners to my settlers so they are at least well armed and well dressed, so whenever i visit a settlement it looks like i have my own militia.
