Settler Management Is Near Impossible

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 6:39 pm

Someone please tell me that they are planning to change this. It would be amazing if they would simplify this. Maybe a board or something you can build in your community that lists all your settlers and their current tasks. Something similar to the way they have it in their Fallout Shelter game would be fantastic even. Google has been telling me this is a common complaint, and if you could also assign people to jobs from that same board that would make it significantly easier then tracking down a (maybe) unassigned settler, then running all the way across the town to where I have the crops I want them to take care of set up at. Until Bethesda simplifies this, does anyone have any tips for settler management to make my life easier?

i was just about to make a similar thread to this lol

i completely agree.

once you get past about 7 or 8 settlers, it starts getting harder and harder to remember who is doing what.

a board in town that can assign tasks, and lists who is doing what would be great.

but because all new settlers, just have 'settler' as a name, i dont think that would be feasible or manageable. 'do i pick 'settler' with hat, or 'settler' with another hat??'

a simple 'assigned to - ' or 'unassigned' label on a settler when you select them in workbench mode would suffice and perfectly feasible.

Oh. I still haven"t gotten a new settler in my game, but I was hoping they'd have written the three lines of code that would assign to them a random name from the huge list of names they spent money to have soundbits for.

nope.

just 'settler'

need a way to manage it. better than taking a snapshot of the 'settlers' face so you can remember which one is doing what. :/

no need for a board in the town... just let you use the computer you can make to do it...

def needs something one for this though i hate trying to find which settlers / people in towns have nothing to do...

also if you have 5 of each crop and you assign one person to 'farm' they should farm all the crops not just one type..

You could always get them task related "uniforms" such as all people assigned to farming get vault jumpsuits, those assigned to guard posts get leather jackets, etc...not perfect but it's something?

Damn, really? What is the point to put someone to farm, if farms only one resource!!!!

They don't just farm one resource. They farm up to six 'food units' worth of resources at a time, in any combination.

I actually like the board idea, it could be craftable. Yes, the settlers should have names, that's just lame that they don't. It's not the SSDI database, it's a hundred or whatever people throughout the game?

I tried to move the terminal in Sanctuary, you can't. Moving or building them would be nice, once you have power people could send (pre-written) simple messages (just selecting from a menu) to settlers, or just manage them from a menu. That would be immersion.

Also, the ancient Romans had indoor plumbing, you know.

It does need to be improved. Juggling those people is damn hard.

After assigning orders I just come back the next day and walk around like an overseer. If anybody is not holding a gun or a rake, bang, you come with me. Lol.

Yes, the current way to manage citizens is not good at all. To be honest I find it surprising it was found to be acceptable and ended up like this in the release version.

Read that Reddit link. Assign settlers through the workbench. It shows what they are currently assigned to.

Isn't it my main function in life to find my missing son? Now I have to spend a ton of time micro managing a settelment. What I should be able to do is put someone in charge of the settelment to manage it. He/she might make suggestions or requests for me to improve the place, mini quests if you will, but please am I playing Fallout or Civ?

You can do what ever you want. If you just want to find Shaun, do so.

If you want to help other people within the Commonwealth you will build the settlements.

But the assignment of the settlers really should be improved!!! It's pain in the a** to keep remembering which settler is assigned where.

More over it's annoying that assigned people are not where they should be. Just assigned a settler to a shop and he keeps hammering on a wall at the other end of sanctuary... I can trade with him though.

I just read an interesting tip that someone posted on another board...at the time that they assign a settler to a job, in addition to giving them some sort of hat or "uniform" apparel, they also give them a pistol (since there are a lot of pistols in this game) that has been renamed to indicate the person's job, a name, and location. So for example, if you assign a dude to a guard tower in Sanctuary, you could give them a random pistol named "Guard Jim Sanct" . You have to click on them to trade to see that info, granted, but I think that is an interesting work-around (and lets you name people for immersion, as well as note their jobs. They do the same for supply line folks by indicating their origin and end location (going from settlement A to settlement B would read "Supply Sarah A/B", or from B to A "Supply Sarah B/A". At least, I think that is an accurate summary, I can't find the original post at the moment to more properly quote and credit this other person. It's a bit of work, but could be a helpful system!

According to the above posted reddit link:

  • Highlighting a settler in workshop mode will also highlight anything he's assigned to.

But still, I should not have to walk around to see what is highlighted whenever I select a settler. A List would be nice. esp. a list in Pip-Boy.

Yeah, if the settler and object are not near each other at the time (like my guards who keep wandering away from towers), it is really difficult to use this technique to see who is assigned to what, or to assign someone new to it. I have been dragging my bell over to the area where I need the settler to be, ringing it to call everyone over to that area, etc. There should be a better way!

Agreed, it doesn't solve the issue.

I would like the craftable board, but just as a heads up, when you visit one of your settlements and someone new has come they come and find you to introduce themselves and ask you to give them a task.

I know, it doesn't solve the issue, it's just another cosmetic aspect to save time in small settlements, try this at a fully decked out Starlight Drive-In with 20+ people. Not everybody will register with you.

Another potential solution is to make those resource stations (Resources > miscellaneous) whenever a settler joins and need a job they automatically assign themselves to one.

Another temporary solution is use the town bell near the "job" area to bring the settlers into one place and use the highlight function.
