Settlers? More like squatters.

So this isn't a complaint thread. But the settlers need more of an assigned location in my settlements. Right now they are squatters in my first settlement.

You see like a few people after getting out of Vault 111, I went to Sanctuary. Having witnessed the bomb drop and waking up to a wasteland... home felt like the right place to go. There I jumped feet first into the awesome world of crafting and building. I tore down and salvaged old buildings you could not enter. I went through houses you could and cleaned them all up. I even repaired the picket fences.

But for RP reasons my character felt to much pain and sadness living in her old home. So... lo and behold there was a house across the street. it had working lights and work benches for all her needs. So I fortified the heck out of that house. Enclosed the garage with steel walls and a door. put a generator inside to run more lights. Put a guard barricade in front of that garage door and set up a turret. I then went inside the house and personalized the interior to her decorating desires. Put in a bet, table, chairs. tv, storage shelves and other things needed for bunkering down in her own personal shelter.

Fast forward...

Went to a town and found it under attack from raiders. After helping fend off the raiders and a deathclaw, the settlers there decided to move to Sanctuary. And who can blame them? It had fresh purified water. power generators, guard posts. Even a garden.

And... they promptly moved into MY personal bunker. Not any of the other houses. Mine. And they won't leave. In fact one of them keeps giving me attitude when I talk to her, like its really inconvenient for her that I'm here. Yeah she wouldn't have MY bed to sleep in if it were not for ME making it. And I can't sleep in the bed at night since it says "object in bed" or something like that that prevents me from using the bed so my character can get well rested.

So I then went to another house and fixed it up with 5 beds and other things. But the settlers will not move to it.

Guess its time to uproot and move to the gas n garage place down the street...

You can assign a settler to a specific bed.

just as you would assign them to a task.

Then they don't sleep in yours.

Dont build more than absolute bare minimum at the red rocket if you want to keep for yourself. The root issie is unlike say the FO3 shacl which was 'owned' by you, there is no owned housing in settlements, least none i've found so far.

'Your' house, even a scratch built one, is simply a bed for the AI settlers. Long as your settlement has water, food, beds, etc - and a settler is attracted there via beacon, quest, or you rescue them - they claim whatever they want becaise nothing is 'owner' tagged by you.

Oversight by bethesda and hopefully fixed in later patch, DLC. Modders will also do it but i want a bethesda version because it's pretty embarassing they didnt address this in launch design.

Does this asignment take up an assignment slot? Or can they be assigned to bed and also still be assigned to food harvest, guard station, etc? The other assignments or only 1 per person, so wondering if your bed assignment is separate or same as others.

Far as i can tell, you can fortify and wall all you want. Just dont build any water or food there since you personally dont need it to use as your fortress of solitude. You can power it up with gigantic generators, arm it to the teeth and wall it off as your fortress, with just one bed for you you to sleep on.

If you build food, water, and beds though, you may attract settlers. Beacon for sure attracts them but it is unclear if some settlers arrive more slowly even without beacon or not, so like you - i like having one personal settlement that is my solo fortress and i use red rocket for that too, and just did the above - so far, no stinking squatters :)

cool good to know.

I did go and assign settlers in Sanctuary to different beds. and then hung "authorized personal only" signs by the bedroom door haha.

I don't think you can really have a good water source at Red Rocket since there is no nearby spring of water. But yeah, I don't need to set all that up. Its mainly my "ironman" pad heh I'll store all my power armor there.

The settlers had the audacity to move into my character's former home. They're lucky she's open-minded enough to allow them to take refuge there and so she's remodeling the house.

How do you assign settlers? I keep getting told to assign people to tasks but have no idea how to do it. Heck, I don't even know how to build anything really. The whole building part of the game is confusing.

Yeah, I shifted the cow that decided my bed was okay for her to sleep in, the one time I laid my head down in my house. You'd think Codsworth(less) would be better about guarding the castle!
