Settlers stealing my goodies....

Post » Tue Jan 19, 2016 3:09 am

I thought that but nah, haha I found them, they had them in their inventory, two of my settlers had 5 mags between them and a bunch of my weapons!!! Sometimes I have noticed that my companions have been picking up weapons when out and about (un prompted) and I didn't notice until Curie just started pulling out all different weapons, I hadn't given her any! And I know she only had the laser rifle to start with.

I guess I should check all of my settlers inventory. You invite them to your castle and they grab your stuff! :) If the Homeplate had more options I would move there but I also love the castle... I live in Maine and we have sites like this too.

I let it slide because they tend to scavenge more junk for my settlement than they take away.

They are not gone. They are sinking into the ground. I had a set of 10 bowling pins set up. One day a few were missing, the next more. Then I saw the last 3 half way into the floor. The next time, I visited, the three only had their tips above the ground!

I finally did a "tcl" command to go underground, and found a few pins. The rest fell into the void of space.

I dropped 3 nice weapons on the ground in the Castle. They are still there being kicked around as people walk, weeks later.

just the same happened for me, just with the difference that my red rocket has ZERO settlers, so it definitely wasn't a settler who took them :-)

i rather think it's a collision glitch. they'll havok when their 3d is loaded, and esp. when you placed them with the settlement placement tool, which, as you'll have noticed, places objects DIRECTLY onto an other object, other than in-game placing them with havoc physics, which will always make them sit a bit ABOVE the object they're on. and just that's likely to get them under/between other objects' collision once it starts to havok

As others said, its probably sinking into the floor.

Its incredibly frustrating. I spent a lot of time setting up a desk for my room, ash tray, cigars, pre-war globe, it looked great! Until i realized that everything would get messed up every time I fast traveled back.

yeah. i actually WISH they'd take stuff, but they never do (except for food). like, if they'd just grab the best weapon they can find in the workbench instead of me constantly having to manually upgrade my settlers' weapons to keep up with my level's spawned enemies

just don't place objects that havok (= can be moved around in normal game) with the settlement placement tool, grab and place them in game mode (or place them with settlement tool and after that, grab them and let them go once in game mode, has the same effect), you should be fine also after fast travelling then.

Since hearing people make this suggestion, I tried it, but even grab-mode placed items are still sinking. Some items manage to stay in place, at least for a while, but others are hopeless no matter what I do with them. Then sometimes items that have behaved for a while will suddenly start moving around once a problematic item gets placed.

Did that after they fell through the first time, didn't work

Some items are worse than others, not all of them fall through after one fast travel, but inevitably over time they pretty much all fall through.

hm, no further wisdom here then, sorry :-)

edit: except maybe this: in my red rocket (my private clutter museum, kind of), many items gone freak were caused by sheffield, who, for unknown reason, made his trade route go right through the station's interior, including his pack brahmin following up close (which is actually pretty funny to look at when it tries to get out again at the other end :-)) - won't be the cause in majority of cases, but making sure no no brahmin's bumping against your displays definitely isn't a mistake

As others have said I have done this. Items placed in construction mode and without all sink.

The only things that actually say in place 100% of the time are Nuka Colas (Regular, Cherry and Quantum).

Sanctuary is especially "haunted" when it comes to decorating. Many, many hours ago, I decorated a metal shack, which I've since taken down. Yesterday, I went to talk to a settler and suddenly, a tea cup, a metal bucket and something else fall out of the blue sky, almost hitting my character on the head! LOL It's a spot across the road, just from where the workbench is. I usually always find stuff there that went missing a long time ago. However, that is certainly NOT the spot where I dropped the items the first time. So weird!

But yea, settlers don't take anything (stuff in containers or otherwise). I placed a metal desk, on top of it, I placed a typewriter. I saw it sunk half in a day later and it was totally gone the next day. It wasn't on the floor under the desk. I've build my Spectacle Island fortress on both concrete and wooden platform foundations, so my guess is that the typewriter is under the house. I haven't bothered looking for it yet. LOL

Oh and the other objects that are actually still sitting on my table and metal shelf are the nice clean glasses that I took from the Institute. They have been sitting in the same place for many, many hours now! So, yay Institute for pretty glasses... now work on the flower vases! :)

Put all your stuff into your workshops. Nobody will steal from it.

There is a nice option (press T on PC computer) to store all junk you have from your inventory to the workshop only by pressing T.

Workshops are like the big chest in diablo2 :tops:

junk items in your workshop will be used as resource for crafting though, so they're not exactly a safe container in matters of junk :-)

which is sad because it is starting to happen to the 50 teddybears I put inside my house in Dimond city (just to creep out my friends)

true s7o, storing junk in workshops will be used as resource for building.

Anyway if you want to build you need junk, either in inventory or in workshop. If you scrap around the settlement and loot every place very well and place a resource->misc->scavenging station in every settlement the junk used won't be a waste of ... junk.

Keep only one biometric scanner in a workshop you don't use and you should be fine.

I had a funny moment with settlers taking items. I was in Hangman's Alley and dropped a Fatman so I could off load some other junk. Before I could get back to the Fatman we were attacked by some Super Muties. One of my settlers picked up the Fatman (How they had a mini nuke IDK) then proceeded to shoot at the SM about 3 meters away. He took out the SM and everyone else in the vicinity. I got a good chuckle and had to reload a save.

They definitely do pick up weapons and armor out of the workbench when the town's under attack...not sure if they put them back or not. They also like to borrow my power armor. I've seen them use a fat boy, too--I happened onto Abernathy Farm when a ghoul raid was taking place and was a bit startled by the mini-mushroom cloud.

Settlers will take items. Weapons more often than anything else. Settlement gets attacked they all run and raid your storage for weapons. Seen it many times. They will take power armor as well if you leave a fusion core in it.

I have found only two ways to keep settlers from taking my weapons. The first is to make your home base in a settlement with no settlers and don't ever recruit any there. Second, store anything you want to keeps in a place that no settler will ever get to like the Home Base in Diamond City or the room in Vault 81 you get from doing quests there.

You can make any settlement, except Sanctuary if you rescue Preston and friends, a settler free zone. Simply kill any settlers you find there and do not ever place a settlement beacon. I suggest you do this without a companion with you. Most tend to not like it when you wipe out settlers.

Decorating is a exercise in frustration thanks to the game engine. If you can't build and place it with the workbench its going to sink into the ground or fly away sooner or later.

Give them enough stuff and they shouldn't nick it.
