SGM Taking Requests

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:58 am

Hey all, just thought i'd make a new topic for this as it was taking up too much space elsewhere :)

So basically, i am taking requests for making landmasses for YOU! The community. If any of you out there are starting landmass mods, or are currently working on one, and would like some more land or anything like that. Then i will gladly make them for you based on whatever requirements you have. Size doesnt matter (atleast that what all the girls tell me), position is not a problem cos it can always be moved aboot.

All the heightmaps i make are generally based on real world elevation maps. So you can either have a real island, such as New Zealand in its entirety, or something like the Isle of man. Or you can sketch out an idea of the shape of the island and its features and i can make you one based on that, using snippets of real world places :).

Here are a couple ive made already

wow this is wonderfull. actually i was just about ready to start reading any tutoraial i could find on how to create land masses. as im looking to add on a sizeable chunk of land to the south south east and east of morrowind as well as one that resembles newzeland ( well actually an enlarged version of the top part of the upper island that has the aukland area especially bethells beach area where Xena was filmed ) as i am trying to reproduce the lands that xena visited in the show such as greece rome india and egypt. as i wasnt quite sure where to begin with a project like this. ive been working on more misc items and things ill be needing for my mod and sorta putting off the land mass as its a bit overwhelming. i do realize that i need to recreate quite a bit of land since they travled nearly all of europe though iwas going to make a modified version trying to stay as close to the basics as i could. if this is to large of a project i understand and perhaps you could point me in the dirrection of a good tutorial on how to do it myself.
these are a couple maps i was going to use as a basic outline for at least the greece and then add the upper part of egypt and do my best to landscape surrounding areas to mimic some of the other areas i needed such as india and china.

http://i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj101/mystery052/Xena%20And%20Gab%20Mod/mapofgreece.jpg
but as you can see from the map greece is the focal point
ive also taken alot of screen shots of the areas using google earth.
and i also have a gridded map of morrowind and the surrounding ocean that i could put a ruff outline in

but any help would be appreciated. if not i still think its nice of you to offer and i hope some good things come out of this thanks.

You are fantastic for doing this, I would like to know if you could possibly make a land mass kinda like http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs46/f/2009/244/2/b/I_feel_close_to_Hawaii_by_AlphonseCapone.jpg north-north-east of the Morrowind province? I have wanted to work on that for a while now but am a complete rookie on landscaping and can't make any progress whenever I start it up. If you could do this it would most definitely be awesome.

This map looks like alot of fun to make, i could make something pretty much exactly the same shape as this, although you would probably have to add alot of the smaller island with statics, instead of actual land. Depends on how big you want it though. Plus i could use it for a good guide to make alot of the terrain shape. i.e mountains, hills, canyons and such. Shouldnt take me long to make something similar to this, maybe spend a day on it to get it looking nice.

And this.................

Looks like a lot of work, but im a svcker for a challenge. It would probably take me more time to download all the maps i needed to accomplish something like this than to actually work on it and get it something like. If you have WL Messenger or skype, it would be good to talk to you more in depth about this. So i can get a good idea of exactly what you want. But it sounds like alot of land. IF you wanted it to scale i can imagine it being rather fakking large :D which i like the sound of.

Basically, im well up for it.

I think i will work on Malek's land first, as he took the time to sign up just to ask this one favour of me, and it will take alot less time than creating alot of europe. :D

So both of you, keep your eyes peeled and keep checking your inbox. I can see myself having alot of fun with both of these

Geez, where were you two years ago... ;)

As a heads up, you can get really good data from the national elevation database. http://ned.usgs.gov/

It is 32-bit data, so you will need a tool that can read that in, and spit out something these tools can use. I used Photoshop CS2, but I suspect the latest versions of GIMP can do it as well. That site has elevation data available as GeoTIFF (really just a TIFF with a fancy header) for every scrap of land in the US. Given the size, and variety of places, it shouldn't be hard to find a good source of data for a mod. I used one of the Hawaiian islands a couple of years ago as the basis for Ravenwood island.

The only downside is that when you reduce the data from 32 to 16-bit, it gets noisy - which directly results in jagged surfaces. You can clean some of it up by running an average filter, but I found the easiest way to handle it was to just smooth in the CS. Of course, I was using Littoral, not the latest tools, so perhaps this has been corrected already.

You wouldn't do interior exteriors would you? (Sort of like Mournhold, just more terrainish ... if that makes sense).

Yep, i know exactly what you mean. I can do them for interiors too, but due to the size of interiors it can get a bit funny. It Would be nice to know exactly how many exterior cells you can fit in an interior, legth and width wize.

You got something in mind?

I do, but it might be abit much to ask ... it might require alot of custom statics I imagine ... canyons, ravines, sheer cliffs, etc is the general area of terrain I'm going for.

Well... i could make the overall shape of the land. Can make fairly steep cliffs and then you can cover it with statics as you wish.

Just so you know, im currently working on your island. Started working on it earlier, ive made the outline for the island, and im gonna start adding the details shortley

Oh, nice work! :)
How do you make all the landscapes SGmonkey? Manually raising all hills etc? Actually I'm in need of landscape aswell, but then I'll have to draw a map myself.

Thanks Fenyx. :)

These landscapes are all made using greyscale bitmaps. Ive literally spent zero time in the CS to make these maps, but they will all need some touching up in the CS, depending on what your going for.

If your interested in me making one for you, you could draw a rough outline of an island and its features, or find a real place you would like something similar to and send it my way.

You will have to wait a day or two though, got a couple on the go at the moment, and im currently messing around in the CS trying to find out the limitations of Exterior Land in Interiors

i don't think there is a limit , but if you overload a cell with items then lag / freezing / crashing will become issues. If your pc struggles in Balmora then it stands to reason that it will struggle if you recreate Balmora in an interior cell.

A large island placed in an interior cell might be unplayable even without statics / npc's etc if too many poly's.

Well so far, the only limits ive noticed is going too far below water level, not tested weither or not raising the water level fixes this yet. As far as i can tell, you can build stuff pretty damn high up. Then the only other limitation is fog, not found a way to increase the view distance above 9 in MGE

It would be awesome if you could do this:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v84/redwoodtreesprite/DragonQuest/dw1-over1.jpg

Somewhat near the Morrowind mainland to the north, is fine. Allow for Bloodmoon of course. :)

It is smaller than it seems in the pic, as the first Dragon Warrior game was a pretty small world.

Glad you like it, i should get all the detailing finished off tomorrow, got a little caught up today, plus the internet has been on and off, which doesnt help.

So if you like what you see, you should really like it when i start adding the cliffs and mountains and maybe pathways.

You may have noticed im following that map as close as i can. So let me know if you want those paths where they are and i'll see what i can do :)
