These are the things I employ to help me immerse myself...

.only carry what you would realistically be able to carry ie 1 set of armour, 1 sword, a bow, a few potions... I cannot enjoy the game if I have 5 sets of armour in my inventory.

.do not use the local map in caves.. having to memorise the corridors and chambers is much better.. being lost in a tomb is a very awesome feeling.

.do not repair anywhere outside a town... banging your sword with a hammer without an anvil will do far from repair it.

.do not dive into water in full armour, walk around water. But if I come across a small rowboat I imagine I use it.

.stealth ALWAYS. Even a hardcoe warrior would use suprise as a tactical advantage.

.only light a torch when you come across a flame source ie campfire.

.If a weapon/armour breaks in the wild I drop it. Awesome feeling being chased by a group of gnarls in dementia with no curaiss and low health.

.dont sleep in camps, they belong to someone and they would nay appreciate you being there when they find you asleep in their bed.

.bath in streams after a heavy dungeon crawl.

.do not obsessively search the corpses of EVERYTHING. Goblins would have nothing to offer an imperial soldier when you think about it.

.as above, I find the continued accumulation of loot/gold more a 'game' mechanic than living another life.

.balance adventuring with relaxing in towns, reading some books, going for a meal/beer at an inn.

.take food on long trips in the wild.

.carry only a mortar and pestle, the other alchemical tools cannot be carried in your backpack.

.the wise adventurer will always head out at first light.

.the wise adventurer will always camp on the top of forts when he can.

.no fast travel (bar getting around the IC)

.report many things to the town guards.. bandit just killed a travelling NPC? let the guards know about it. Give a silent prayer for the deceased.

.upon exploring a cave, I shoot the door with 3 arrows when I exit, letting other ranger's know it is clean.

.I DO allow myself fast travel if I come across a patrolling guard, I imagine he gives me a ride to town.

.always carry a dagger, regardless of weather i use it. Its the last resort tool.

.Turn the brightness down on your TV so you need a torch in a cave.

well there are just some of the things iv'e learned to make the game more immersive. :)

Change clothes every day - appropriately (my Dunmer Mage wears expensive clothing when contacting Janus Hassildor or lounging around town, for example, or a more practical enchanted robe for adventuring)
Allow a horse time to recuperate after a long ride
Get up early for long trips

These are fantastic. :foodndrink: I do some of these things, but not all. I think I should do all! Any excuse for a new character....

here's mine:

-When in places where there should be dark turn down the brightness(or download a mod if you are on pc)

-If your dead then your dead(makes it much cooler to explore dungeons and know that your life is on the line... even better if you use ooo cause then you could meet some realy bad asses whitch can take 30 arrows)

-Carry a knife for backup

-Use diffrent clothes when you are in town or going around in dungeons

-Don't fast travel

-Try to get a hose, horse, armor, friends, enemyes and such after how your character personality is built up( my last character that died had a friend that just died, some orc in anvil whitch i don't remember the name of. I used a companion mod btw, after he died he never became the same and went to the place the bandits killed him and dropped flowers were he fell. He also named a blade after him.)

and many other things i don't remember right now

-Add me to the no fast travel list
-Don't run inside cities, and especially not inside shops and inns
-No harvesting from farms (even if it is free)
-Don't loot anything you're not going to use. E.G., my current character fights with a mix of hand to hand and restoration, so she doesn't bother picking up any weapons.

I have my own approach to fast travel... I first have to walk a path to a place (AKA walk towards it but going to any additional points you see on the way). I have to actually walk to each city before I can fast travel. The idea behind it was that then I could safely "navigate" a path to avoid danger.

Also, I like to sleep every night, even in the beginning of the game.

I like to start the game by making certain skills "off limits"

Characters pick up specific loot to their focus. For instance, my new mage character picks up only elven and dwarven armor and weapons in order to study them. Another only ever took gems (he loved his shiny objects).

I like to get in the head of the character, so I supply his/her dialouge.

I DO NOT WAIT... EVER...

Some of the stuff I do ( I play on 360 so I'm kind of limited):
- I don't wear armor or carry weapons in whatever town I live in, noone wants a lunatic who runs around their home town armed to the teeth for a neighbor. Talk about driving down property values.
- whatever religion my character is they either go to the chapel or shrine of their patron daedra once a week
- my current character sleeps with no clothes on.
- I always get at least 6 hours of sleep per day.

I do fast travel sometimes though.

Well this varies on what character I'm playing but here's some generals most all my creations use.

Bathe - my characters don't like to be stinky. Even the evil ones don't like blood and gore all over them. Well, except my vampire ;) Always have lavender sprigs in the inventory to remove ick and make them smell nice when they wash.

Eat/Sleep - This varies, they eat when they are hungry. My vamp eats (drinks) every opportunity that's placed in front of her. The others when they feel like. They sleep when they feel tired. Usually a nice 8 hour stretch. My vamp sleeps more as she's just a fledgling at the moment so tires easily. This also would be the time we take care of wounds. Use Aloe leaves to help heal burns when running across nasty mages or to clean out open wounds such as where arrows have pierced.

Clothes - Must dress for the occasion. They all have good clothes, travel clothes, dungeon diving clothes, etc. Outfits are appropriate to character. When it rains, cloaks with hoods. Snow? Full out fur stuff, etc

Travel - All my characters have horses except the vamp. They take excellent care of them, even take them for swims. They keep them out of danger and in general, travel with them as a good friend and are thankful for their help and company. Apples, corn and carrots are in inventory for special treats. Fast travel is used ONLY if I'm in a situation where I have to log out of my game in a hurry and need to get somewhere. Otherwise, it's like it isn't there for me.

Cities - Casual dress and weapons/armor stowed away.

Guilds - I don't join every guild and sometimes don't even join the Blades. I only join things my characters actually would do or care about. Ex: My vamp finds thieving beneath her. She's an assassin and will kill you happily for some cash but won't steal from you. Isn't she sweet! ;)

Playtime - Each character has their own space and takes time to enjoy their surroundings as they see fit. Sometimes they just wander the forests enjoying the deer and scenery. Sometimes a day is taken off to visit friends or travel to a place they've never been. Not always is MY game time their time to battle. It's kind of relaxing for both of us ;)

And then toss in some other stuff as my characters see fit and I'm good to go for RP.

Rather than concentrate on making Cyrodiil more like the real world, I concentrate on the character.

1. They should be interesting. Severus Snape was modeled after Allan Rickman's movie character. Sarrah was modeled after Jennifer Conally's character in the movie Labyrinth. Angel is a child prodigy in illusion magic reduced to child size using the PC console. Her small size proved to create extra hazards for her making the game almost a totally new experience. She can't swim above water. She is slower because of her size. She has to be pressing against an opponent to use a dagger (short arms.)
http://yfrog.com/03athomej

2. My characters are mortal. If they die in the game I will never reload them again. Generally that has not been a problem. Severus lasted more than 700 hours of gameplay and died by his own choice and according to his own code of honor. I find that having respect for the nature of your character takes them out of the realm of crash-dummy and into the realm of living entities that have a desire to survive and thrive.

3. My characters must live with their mistakes and deal with it in accordance with their unique personality. If they are arrested they must make the choice whether to pay, resist or go to jail. I was surprised when Angel was the first character to resist arrest. Being a gentle sort, she didn't fight the guard. Just disappeared like the imp she is and found a TG agent to bribe her bounty. Instead of dying, Angel has chosen to retire to the Arcane University as a researcher. When I want to know how a unique spell works I go to her and she creates the spell and tests it.

4. They are allowed to be aware of me as a sort of guide. They are free to ignore my advice if it suites their personality. Sarrah occasionally demanded that I use the console to resurrect a dead NPC found on the side of the road.

5. Other than that, my characters are free to fast travel if that is their nature, eat or not eat, sleep or not sleep, etc. Despite that they usually ride horses, eat at regular intervals and sleep at night. They chose some NPC's that they consider 'special'. Severus had a crush on Falanu Hlaalu. Angel and Carahil have a sort of adopted-daughter relationship.

Pretty much what everyone is has written. I just try to play like my character is a real person. I find it more fun and immersive that way. It'd be even better with mods, though...

I made a tobbacco smoking alchemist. Hes decent in restore and conjure. He tried joining the chapel and realized it wasn't his thing considring the worship of make believe gods redclous in his opinion, (a real scientific look at life). Hes a real average joe and trys not to get into thing way to over his head just things that are happening locally in the cheydinhal region. Lives in the riverfront village near cheydinhal. Made up my own make believe quest where he goes to find what happened to some of his family and other villagers.

My actual http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8T_wh2q88M build has an interesting RP excuse for staying in the Shivering Isles (which I've barely touched until now, because I like to roleplay and I simply couldn't find an excuse for entering a realm full of madmen): He has learned that is the only place where he can study and learn http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=30973, that is, the art of manipulating space and time. He's currently living in New Sheoth, and he's protected from being possesed by madness by an amulet called the White Rose. Still, he has some rules to apply while he's living there:

- NEVER take out the White Rose.
- Don't eat any raw ingredient from the Isles. Distilled potions are allowed.
- Doing some good deeds always ups the karma. Right now I'm freeing the souls of the Hills of Suicides.
- Don't do anything (excessively) crazy ;)

No, no special music is played...although maybe (with some scripting), someone could make play a song when an animation starts. Dunno if vanilla scripting or OBSE supports that. Or if someone has the interest of doing it...

I've been using that for a while, and has influenced on of my characters.

Rules that apply to all characters (I'm on PS3)

-Eat at least once a day.
-Sleep at least 5 hours a night, unless on an assingment. But must sleep during the day for the energy.
-Always wear something in public to give an impression. None of my chracters are 'mad' so no naked jumping.
-Minimal fast travel- Only after casting a certain spell (Usually just alot of spells so my magicka gets very low)

Rules that apply to my Level 18 Khajiit (A member of the http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ahzirr_Traajijazeri)

-Always carry the Ahziir Traajijazeri
-Travel as light as possible. Less than 50 units, unless back from a stealing mission or looting a cave.
-Always resist arrest. This can get kinda hard, because he's not in the thieve's guild.
R'jitan has 1156 days under his belt, mainly because of jail.

Rules that apply to my level 25 Imperial Noble.

-Always have at least 400,000 septims.
-Always wear Green Velvet, Blue suede or black and gold.
-Clothes and jewlerry must add up to 15,000 or more.
-
His job is a detective, and he has the imperial legion stamp, quills, parchments, various notes and the grey fox cowl on his desk in Rosethorn hall.
He has 768 days under his belt, because he resists arrest and goes to the Thieves guild.

Rules that apply to my level 31 Dark elf Mage. (Retired)

-Kill everything on the roads.
-Kill everything in the cities.
-Wait for respawns
-Rinse and repeat.
He has 3767 days under his belt, and I retired him at 3500.

Oh, this! Developing relationship with NPCs is a lot of fun and makes the gameplay experience so much richer!

Khajiit Acrobat in the Dark Brotherhood often butts head with Gogron- their methods are similar but they have vastly different attitudes- but overall their relationship is amicable. Nord Crusader in the Fighters Guild sees Modryn as a mentor, but more importantly a brother- he recently lost his. Breton Healer in the Mages Guild appreciates the camaraderie of the Bravil Guild, but never felt he fit in there. On an unrelated note, I think he and Deetsan have something going on.

My character doesn't pay much attention to 'rules'. She simply lives her life in Cyrodill and fully inhabits her world. Buffy knows bobg's character, Angel. Like Angel, much of Buffy's world involves strong relationships with the important people that also inhabit her world. Here is a snip from her journal to demonstrate:

* * *
And so it went as we broke bread and shared venison stew until two bottles of wine were gone and the fire was low. Finally, the tales ran dry and a wonderfully comfortable silence between close friends gently joined us. I went to Daenlin's cupboard and, after cutting us a plate of fruit and cheese, rejoined him at the table.

"Daenlin, what's the matter? Why are you looking at me like that?"

"I was just recalling the morning you were born." His eyes sparkled brightly with moisture. "Like the good godfather your parents asked me to be, I had spent most of the starry Rain's Hand night pacing the front porch of The Fair Deal with your father. Nilawen was inside helping Terry Ann give birth. It was at the very moment of sunrise that we heard your first cry. When Nilawen came out to tell us about it, Superior boasted that your birth is what had caused the sun to rise." Daenlin stared at the empty wooden cup in his hands. After a moment he raised his eyes to meet mine.

"Where did the years go, Buffy?" A single tear finally escaped and traced a path down the age lines of the Bosmer's rugged cheek. "Why just yesterday, you were eight years old when I took you on as an apprentice. I taught you the bow, and you sparked the long-forgotten joy of life into this old elf's tired spirit. Look at you now. You're all grown up, and a graduate of the Arcane University."

I reached across the small table. I could feel the rough bowstring calluses on Daenlin's fingers as I pressed his open hand against my cheek. "I will always be your little apprentice. Will you take me hunting tomorrow morning, Master?"

When laws are broken in game I play along and always resist, or break out of jail.
No fast travel unless I have visited the place before and I have no time in real life to play, but never when on the lamb.
Then I have to steal, kill, rustle and evade untill I can safely pay the bribe to a doyen, or just continue as a bandit.
Once a job is undertaken I role play along no matter how weird it gets.
Clothes to suit the area / player, allways changing gear to fit the mood.
If infected with vampirism roleplay along, never seeking to cure it.

I also like the khajiit freedom fighter / bandit build, and always find that book asap, as well as the clan mothers one as well.

Not a huge list but makes it more fun for me.

I'm mildly creeped out by the fact that I was roleplaying my khajiit almost the the letter of what that book describes  , I will have to start carrying that around to :)

1. I have the difficulty on 65%

2. I don't hop around everywhere

3. I don't teleport - EVER

4. I walk around cities/towns like a normal person unless I am on urgent business

5. I hold only a realistic amount of items

6. I regularly eat food

That's all I can think of for the time being.

- I dont fast travel.

- I don't wear armor/weapons in cities.

- I put my bow and arrows away when it's raining, and wear a hood.

- I eat and sleep regularly.

- I only carry what I need (one bow, arrows, clothes, a few potions/ingredients and a few keys)

- Since my current character is an assassin, I killed the people that were "spying" on Glarthir, and I'm currently hunting down the clergy in each chapel for Else God-Hater (not sure how I'm going to get paid for this....maybe just pickpocket her and act like that's the "payment").

- My current character also has a drinking problem, so several bottles of beer/ale/wine every night, and one with breakfast and lunch.
