Sharing the Mysticism Around

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:23 am

We all know that Mysticism is cut, and Enchanting is brought in, but where do all the aspects and spells of Mysticism go?
I'm thinking that Soul Trap will be incorporated into the Enchanting skill, because it'd make sense seeing as though souls are the way that items are enchanted.
As for the others, I'm not really sure. Perhaps Spell Absorption will add to Restoration, and Dispel and Telekinesis will be thrown into the Alteration skill. Maybe some will go into Illusion, too. I think that most will disappear into Alteration, however it's fairly difficult for me to distinguish what should go into Alteration and what should become a part of Illusion.

So lastly, I'd like to know where you hope and think they will be incorporated. It might clear things up a bit.
Also, on a side note, is there any official word of where these spells will actually go now?
Thanks all.

I believe Todd said that most Mysticism spells are going to Alteration.

To me, these are the obvious ones:

Telekinesis, Reflect => Alteration
Detect Life => Illusion
Soul Trap => Enchant

Spell Absorption and Dispel are still a tossup. I'm leaning towards Alteration for both of them, but Restoration is still a possibility.

I hope Alteration gets the Absorb effects that were previously moved from Mysticism to Restoration.

Oh really? Awesome. :goodjob:
The main reason I'm interested is because my Breton character is only going to be good at three of the magic schools, and with Mysticism out I was wondering which one would replace it and receive the +10 point bonus alongside Restoration and Conjuration. So now it sounds as if it'll be Alteration, which was exactly what I was hoping for. :blush:

Ah, yeah, forgot to mention Detect Life. That'll surely go into Illusion since (to me) Night-Eye is the most similar of spells to that.
Also, I wonder if being Dispelled is a form of being restored? If so, I suppose it'll go into Restoration.

Alteration: Telekinesis, Reflect Spell, Reflect Damage
Illusion: Night Eye, Detect Life
Restoration: Dispel, Spell Absorption
Soul Trap - gone. You equip a soulgem and use it on a corpse instead.

There is cefinitely an argument for soul trap going into conjuration, well, the necromancy bit, anyway. would fit in that or enchanting just as well. Maybe, now we have equippable anti magic shield spells, the reflects/absorbs will be merged with the shield and resist spells under alteration.

Most of them can probably go into alteration, but I'd say detection spells would be illusion since they deal with perception, allowing the subject to detect things that wouldn't normally be detectable. I can see the logic to putting soul trap under enchanting, but if Bethesda wants to have enchanting only affect crafting enchanted items and not govern any spells, then I could see it going into either alteration, or conjuration instead, since conjuration would also likely involve souls for summoning ghosts and such.

I never truly understood the difference between mysticism and alteration anyway, it seemed like two schools for the same concept to me.

as far as I can work it out, Alteration is using magical energy to manipulate the physical world, and Mysticism is using magical energy to manipulate magical energy, not that that actually explains anything at all, that's why it's mystical, I suppose.
