Shaun[our son] will be a major character

And then the son says ''JOIN ME IN THE DARK SIDE''

No wait that was the father.

Whatever it still sounds cool.

If you play as the mother how is the father supposed to feed the baby?

It's simple, the game and movie industry has overdone the whole family missing and in danger plot line that ends in a sweet and heartwarming reunion so many times that it is not interesting at all anymore. I'm not saying we absolutely have to end up killing him, but make it to where you have to pass a speech check to talk him down like you could with the major antagonists of New Vegas. Maybe after that he could become a companion or something. To me that sort of story is much more interesting than beating the same dead horse for years on end.

I wouldn't mind that sort of ending, you talk your kid down and he becomes a companion.

"Come, Shaun! Let's go explore that random, abandoned building on the horizon!"
"Sure thing, Mom/Dad!"

But sadly I'm expecting either Shaun to be evil and we have to kill him, or he's the good guy who gets killed after an emotional reunion to make us get pissed at whoever killed him.

I wouldn't mind seeing Shaun really but the wife is dead on sight for me, due to how I'm roleplaying my character.

As far as we know, anyway. For all we know, by 'sole survivor', we're really 'the last person to leave Vault 111'. Shaun and Spouse Survivor may very well have been turned into Vaultsicles as well, but released a few decades (20 at least) ago, so Shaun's a young man now.

My guess is your spouse and child become androids.

One will accept their fate the other will not.

You are the sole survivor of the attack of the one who does not.

One goes on to support the Institute the other brings the BoS to destroy the Institute.

Another possibility is one is an android and the other is not leading to a similiar scenario.

If the first is true I won't care about either If the second is true I wil back the non 'droid.

Somehow, I think we don't see any more of the baby and mother, except to perhaps hear of their deaths... I hope not, but yeah...

Frankly, I hope that we can have a daughter rather than a son since Todd was careful to say "baby" rather than "son". I'm sick of all the "parent-son" stories and find them boring, especially compared to "parent-daughter" stories. I don't have any empathy for "parent-son" stories/relationships, but find "parent-daughter" stories to have plenty of emotional connection. They are far less common, too, so it would be much more interesting from a narrative/creative standpoint.

I'd prefer not to see Shaun in person, I like the idea of the Sole Survivor discovering their dead family in Vault 111 & having to deal with that trauma.

Todd's comment on an emotional story & the fact that you can decide what your spouse & child looks like (the child being the combo of the two) could mean that your family could then appear in a Tranquility Lane type VR as part of a quest or the Institute could create android versions of your family to trick you or in exchange for your help.

*slides a revolver across the table* Yes... interestingly enough. You are going to detest this assignment. Your son was located in Junktown a few hours ago heading down the highway southbound. I think you will enjoy reuniting with him. But when you're done with your heart to heart. Carry out your assignment... and kill him. Your pay will be waiting for you in the usual place. How's that for a choice, [Insert Name here]?

How is it any different? Its a kid, your kid, and you have to stop/help him/her. It doesn't really matter to me what gender they are. How exactly do you find them boring may I ask? I think they are about on par in movies/games/books/TV and whatever else you watch. Of course there will be differences (duh) but they will still have the same basic premises.

I personally would rather not have the other spouse/son survive. Could be interesting if the son is an antagonist or the Spouse.

Irrespective of whether he plays a vital role or not I just hope we don't have to find him.

This is something I've seen thrown about since E3. It's not an illogical assumption, but I also realize that gaming communities are prone to wild assumptions, so I'm leaning towards this not being the case.

I'm thinking the spouse and child will either be intro props that are discarded after the bombs drop, or you will be searching for them after you leave the vault. Who knows what they will be until we get more info really.

That sounds like such an utterly atrocious story that I'm now fully expecting it from the "talented" writers at Bethesda. :P

Can you explain this one small detail for me.. If shaun was a baby when he was frozen, how would he be able to leave when he was thawed? Could be with the mom.. Can't they just all die in the vault and have the main character as the sole survivor. Maybe, just maybe the vault experiment was to have one survivor experience the world without any person who experienced something similar. So, the player character would awake amongst all the dead residents of the vault to leave and see death across the wastes but have none with a similar experience.
