Shelter Design & Contents- Thoughts

Post » Thu May 22, 2014 12:23 pm

For my Fan fiction http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1500755-pandoras-dawn/ that I have begun writing, posting here and another site I began to contemplate the contents of what a Fallout Shelter would contain for the occupants who made it inside before the bombs fell and what they could take to survive the radiological hellscape that awaited them outside.

Fallout Shelters range were constructed everywhere during the Cold War era from department stores, high schools, off the street, and elsewhere.

The following is a small list of what I've thus far noted down...

Occupancy would be around the size of the shelter from housing a few dozen to hundreds like those in department stores/etcetera along with bunks, toiletries, and ectetera

Food & Water for x-time that they are theorized to be within with possible water filtration/recycling of toilet facilities.

Armor- Radiation Suits or Advanced Radiation Suits with the possibility of Combat Armor & Helmets for police/security officers

Weapons & Ammo- What type would be stored within an obvious weapons locker from .32, 9 & 10 mm, and up to big guns

Medical supplies of Rad-X, Rad-Away, Stimpaks, Med-X. Would other like Mentats, Psycho, Pre-war Jet,

Thanks for the help

It would be easier to take an existing place then place items that would fit the space, for it's intended purpose. Is it for military personal? Civilian use? Scientist? Or simply a Prepper with time and or money. A bunker is usually something converted into a different purpose, with specialty bunkers for rich or important people.

Goods point and as stated the Fallout Shelter I am working out would be Civilian accessible from say the local department store basemant, below the high school, and etcetera... in my story its an old Cold War shelter that the University has since retrofitted and expanded deeper into the permafrost rock layer below ground.

Eventually they would have been converted like in the film 'The Divide' where New York is nuked and the superintendent of an apartment and a few of the tenants make it to the old bomb shelter beneath the apartment complex which has since been turned into storage, laundry room, and etcetera but the super has since stockpiled away some goodies for his survival but it goes to hell quickly with the unexpected tenants.
