Install Instructions
Requirements
Morrowind GOTY or Bloodmoon fully patched.
Shader Model 3.0+ graphics card; integrated graphics like Intel HD series probably won't work.

1. Update to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=35 (This is a required update for all Windows, and won't conflict with DX10+.)
2. If you've just installed Morrowind, run Morrowind to the title screen once, to generate Morrowind's first time settings.
3. Install MGE XE by extracting the archive to the Morrowind directory.
4. Run the new MGEXEgui. Read the instructions page.
5. If you use Steam, you should turn off the Steam overlay (in Steam, right click Morrowind > Properties). If you use Crossfire/SLI, turn off "Responsive menu caching" in the In-game tab, to avoid performance reductions, as this feature is SLI unfriendly.
6. There is an optional mod, 'XE Sky Variations', that will randomize the sky colour and sunrise/sunset every day. It requires high quality sky scattering enabled, and MWSE enabled.
Recommended: set timescale to 10 or 15 in the console to slow down the day cycle (or 1000 to speed up). The movement of the sun is very visible.
Note that Morrowind view distance in-game is set to maximum when you first load a game. MGE XE requires this.
Don't expect everything to cast a shadow, it's only objects large enough to appear in distant land. Small objects will cast weaker shadows for their size.
There are some HUD mods for use with MGE XE available from the same download page, mostly upgrades of Yacoby's mods and Vampiric Embrace. HUD mods for previous versions of MGE are unlikely to work.
Reporting problems
All errors while running Morrowind are logged to mgeXE.log in the Morrowind directory. Errors from running MGEXEgui are logged in the mge3 directory. You can access these logs by opening MGEXEgui, in the Config tab there will be 'Open last mgeXE.log' and 'Open DL generator log' buttons.
When reporting errors, always post mgeXE.log (in a spoiler tag to avoid clutter) and OS, video card details, and driver version. Please report rendering errors with detailed information and a screenshot.
If the distant land generator crashes, please post your mge3/distant-land-crash-dump.txt.
Uninstalling
Delete MGEXEgui, mge3, d3d8.dll and dinput.dll from your Morrowind directory.
Improvements over 0.9.9
New features
- Morrowind's UI can now be scaled/zoomed.
- You can now choose moveable or borderless windowed mode.
- Fixes 16x antialiasing mode to use CSAA where available.
- Screenshots now capture without the UI included, unless you are in menu mode.
- Screenshot names are now appended with the date and time instead of an incrementing number. The need for a space after the screenshot prefix name is no longer present.
- Improved shaders. Small optimizations. Smoother, rounder bloom. DoF shader adds distance blur in heavy fog.
- Added transparency AA to grass and distant statics for better anti-aliasing.
- XE Sky Variations mod. Changes the sky and sunrise/sunset colours every day.
- Added French and Russian localizations, thanks to the community.
Per-pixel lighting shader
- This feature is a new renderer that improves the lighting of Morrowind. You will see better warmth from torches, daytime will have more dynamic range, overlapping lights will actually provide more brightness, removal of inaccurate discolouration, and better point lighting from magic projectiles. This requires a good graphics card and reduces fps by approximately 10%.
Fixes
- Fixed initialization to start without errors when there are no distant land files and distant land set to off.
- Reduced gaps in water reflections caused by distant land projection bias.
- Fixed the rendering of moons when using high quality sky scattering.
- Reduce amount of logging to minimize stutter caused by disk I/O.
- Fog near the player in heavy weather (large fog offset like fog and ashstorms) is much closer to the density of the original fog. Fog and ashstorms look thicker, and fogged water reflections more accurately match the objects above ground.
- Corrected fog colour discrepancies at sunset and sunrise.
- Added separate LOD versions of the Ghostfence and Vivec water meshes, to avoid flickering caused by z-fighting. Mournhold steps and streetlamps included in distant land and reflections.
- Moving the third person camera in-game with macro functions displays the camera offset coordinates.
- Fixed some bugs with alt-tabbing.
More shaders
MGE XE requires a specific format of shaders to use in-game variables. It is not compatible with shaders for standard MGE. You can find more shaders and dev info at the shader library thread.
Known issues
The game may crash on loading, try 'Disable internal MWSE' on the in-game tab. This will of course require you to disable MWSE mods.
Reducing Morrowind options draw distance slider below maximum causes drawing errors ("melting" land)
Notes
If you used a previous version, please remove the old HDR.fx shader from the XEshaders directory, it is no longer being updated.
Reflect far statics is disabled. It causes a very large amount of drawing to occur which is not visible for the 95% of the game when you are looking towards land. I tried to detect when they should be visible before, but it hardly ever worked well.
The MGE XE statics override list is included automatically in every distant land build, you don't need to do it manually.
Companion Health Bars has been fixed so you can still ask an NPC to turn off their health bar if they are no longer your companion or following you.
All other HUD mods are fixed to autodetect screen size, so screen config menus are no longer needed.
