Shelter from Magnus' Blaze 9

What's your install path and are you using the internal MWSE?

Forgive me if you've been over this, but I like to start from scratch.

I have no problems starting from scratch. I would love to get this working and am grateful for any help. 8)

My install path is "D:\Games\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\

I am not using MWSE currently, just Morrowind, Tribunal, Tribunal's patch, Bloodmoon, Bloodmoon's patch, then MGE XE.
- edit: I read that wrong. I disabled MWSE via the MGE XE gui and loaded the game. I have music now, no video - but also no immediate errors. 8) I'll let it run for a bit and see if it just takes ahile to load as previously suggested.

But if this works, is there a workaround to have MWSE working again? There are a few mods that I will sorely miss if I can't get it to run properly.

I had the black screen problem several months ago, posted on this thread (well, either this one or one of the earlier ones) and Hrmchnd gave some input. One error was caused because I did not correctly use MGE XE. Another time was due to an error in the file. In both cases, Hrmchnd replied with suggestions. I don't have the link handy, but a search for posts by Hrnchmd within the last three months in this thread should turn them up for you so you can check his suggestions with what you've tried so far.
I'll check out the posts, thanks for the tip.

FWIW. I don't have anything special in MGE XE activated (distand land, shaders, etc) I just installed it, opened the MGEXEgui.exe file (which opens properly), closed it, then started the game.

Kodiak888

From what I remember, so take it with a grain of salt, but what I had to do was to first create Distant Lands and then disable it (terminology?) in the MGE XE console. That cleared up the black screen. Because I knew going in that my video card would not support the MGE XE graphics very well (poor FPS), I made the minimal number of choices for DL creation. As I recall, Hrmchnd gave an explanation at the time.

In my case, MWSE did not affect things. In fact, some of the mods I play use it, and I'd be up the creek if I turned it off

I haven't had time (nor will I tonight probably) to search for his fixes yet. I did let the game run for 30 minutes with MWSE off to see if the menu ever popped up. It didn't, which is a relief and dissappointment. Since getting MGE XE to run at the expense of not being able to sue MWSE isn't much of a victory.

You can still run the external version of MWSE.

Hey everyone. I'm wondering if someone can help me with a problem that I've been having since trying to install all the graphics mods on Morrowind.

I'm using MGE XE and distant lands. Everything seems to be working okay, except for the Vurt's groundcover mod. I just can't get the grass to display properly. What's happening is a constant texture pop/in pop/out glitch with the grasses. So, if I turn to the right or left, I can see all the grass around me "flashing" in and out over and over. It's just a constant, distracting disappearing/reappearing affect. I don't think it has to do with view distance, because it's only the groundcover that's doing this, and it doesn't matter the distance. I get the flashing problem with grass all around me.

The only probably I've found that's similar to mine while googling is that some people have had trees disappear as they approach them. I've tried regenerating distant lands 3 times, but I still get the same effects.

Can anyone help me out? I'm using the Steam version and have done everything I need to have the mods work with the Steam version (disabling the community, installing outside the Program Files folder, etc..)

Here are my specs:

Win. 7 x64
i5 2500k 3.3GHz
AMD HD 7950 (overclocked)
8 GB DDR3 1600 RAM

Can anyone help? I'm almost ready to give up. I have a new graphics card, so I'm not sure if it's a problem with the card's driver, since they're in their nascent stages. Thanks for any help.

What are your "Use Distant Statics" settings? If your end distance values are really really close youll see that effect. Try selecting the "auto set other distances" then deselecting it and see what happens.

Also, uncheck Vurt's mods if they're in your load list because they're only needed when generating distant land.

@JoelRader

Here are my distant statics settings:

Near: Min (150), End (2.3)
Far: Min (600), End (6.2)
Very Far: Min (800), End (10.1) -- When I check and uncheck "Auto set...", this is the only figure that changes, and it only changes from 10.0 - 10.1.

Above water fog: Start (2.3), End (15.0)
Below water fog: Start (-0.5), End (0.3)
Distant interiors fog: Start (0), End (2.0)

My draw distance is currently set to 15 cells.

I tried what you asked, and it had no effect. :/

@Jac

Yes, the grass mods are unchecked in the loader.

Still can't figure this out. Any other suggestions?

It seems there is no clear reason for why this is happening. Get the latest drivers and be sure you have the latest directx, this is important. Also the most important step for Steam is probably the bsa redating which latest MCP covers.

Yeah, I did the bsa redating. Actually, AMD just updated my GPU's driver a few hours ago, so I'm going to update that now and see what happens.

Update and some success!

Well I found out that if I set the game to run in Windowed Mode that it boots up successfully! With MWSE turned on! I'll need to do some testing, and I hope that the reason why it black screens in full screen mode is found, but at least I can start enjoying the game.

I'm happy to provide whatever help or info to track down the problem, but you can add "try it in windowed mode at your monitor's default resolution" to the tempory fix suggestions for now. 8)

Can someone or Abot :P tell me if the "tweaked XE Water.fx" by Abot (http://abot-morrowind.tk/index.php?option=downloads&task=info&id=20&Itemid=50) doesn't make the game crash anymore?? If all the instability/bugs have been resolved? thanks

You need to set up a macro:
  • Open up MGEXEgui.exe.
  • Click on the In-game tab.
  • Click the Macro Editor button.
  • Select a key (e.g. Home). Leave the Function drop-down menu alone and click on the one below it where the default is Take Screenshot and select Toggle Shadows.
  • Click on Save and close that window.
  • Close the gui.

Now whenever you press the key you selected, shadows will toggle on and off.

After installing my updated GPU driver and a fresh copy of Morrowind and the mods, I'm still getting the grass flashing glitch. Seems like nothing will work... :/

So when you described it to me it sounded like it flashed in and out of existence, rather than flashing colors. Is that right?

My friend I mentioned back on SFN had a weird strobe/rave grass thing going on but it doesn't sound the same as your problem. You were right to ask here.

I've been noticing an interesting texture problem with some rocks, specifically ones out in the Grazelands and in the cliffside facing Balmora (might be more, but those are the ones I notice the most). It only does this in the distance, and clears up when I near them.

Looks like MGE XE's landscape blending to me, probably has nothing to do with on the rocks. Try setting your distant land mesh quality up if you want to test my hypothosis.

It's nothing to do with On The Rocks, I've been using that for ages. The strangeness is just more noticeable on rocks in the distant land. Upping mesh quality just makes it worse-looking.

An aspect of the original "On the Rocks" textures was made more obvious by the most recent versions of MGE XE. Taddeus went back and changed his textures to make this never-before-revealed aspect either less obvious or a non issue. Neither MGE XE nor Taddeus' rocks were necessarily "messed up" but adjustments did have to be made. The whitening of the texture was the aspect which was revealed.

Roaming around near Molag Mar, I noticed it again on landscape textures, so I really don't think it was On The Rocks. I remember the texture whitening from before, and it was different.
