Shield and Magic

Post » Thu May 19, 2011 2:24 pm

I think an interesting way to do combat would be magic in one hand and a shield in the other. You could get into melee with the shield while laying waste with spells. I think i like this combo, and i dont think ive seen it talked about yet.

In one of the game informer articles they said something about it. (I think)
I plan on using a shield spell in my left hand! Ha! Beat that!

Will it function the same as a shield, or just increase ac?

well, a shield spell only increases AC, whereas i can enchant a shield with shield. And i can also shield-bash..

Well before you get all perky... you cant BLOCK with a shield if you have magic in your other hand..

Also the shield spell in skyrim protects vs magic not so much if any vs weapons.

from what i remember from an article, the Block skill was mentioned to be more useful and have perks for elemental resistance and/or blocking spells

not too sure though when or where i saw it so dont take my word for sure

but ya, back on the subject of the thread, ya ill be using the magic/shield combo and maybe switch with a sword every now and then

"Warriors who prefer the sword-and-shield approach can increase their defensive capabilities with shield perks that give them elemental protection from spells."

just found it http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2011/01/24/skyrim-building-better-combat.aspx

So they are going to disable the block button when you have a shield and magic equipped?

That is what an above poster said. Im not positive if its true or not. It wouldnt make sense to disable the block with magic equipped. Unless Beth came to the conclusion that its a far superior setup to anything else...But, i doubt thtais the case.

All of these builds are inferior to this genius set-up:

Right hand: Enchanted shield
Left hand: Stronger enchanted shield

ALL SHALL BOW BEFORE THE MIGHT OF THIS IMPENETRABLE DEFENSE!!!

In reality though, my mage will probably have an offensive spell in one hand, and a shield/defensive spell in the other.
And I probably shouldn't be allowed to post after 1 AM central time...

I'll probably have a Shield spell in one hand, and a summon spell in the other. And once they are cast, I will then switch and have a sword in both hands :)

You can't block with a single handed weapon and a spell.

if i remember correctly you didnt even need to have your sword drawn to use your shield so i dont think they're not gonna allow it

they want to emphasize the use of the shield more than previous games so why would they limit the shield to only sword/shield combos?

Also, there is the favorites menu that is supposed to allow us to seamlessly switch between fighting styles. So we can cast a shield spell then switch to a warrior setup with sword/shield.

I've been thinking about this actually, worrying about not being able to block with a one handed weapon and no shield. Well, theres no longer a unique spell button, is there? So I'm guessing there will now be a block button AS WELL as left/right hand. It was bugging me for ages, but it makes sense when you think about it (unless I'm missing something)

It was simply stated in a magazine that you can't block if you have a combination of "1H-Weapon + Spell" , which afaik isn't 100% confirmed either.

It's highly likely that you can block + bash with an equipped shield in one of your hands.

I can imagine Shield + Alteration builds being insane tank/turtle characters.
