Shocking framerate on high-end system. Nothing seems to fix

Post » Tue Dec 06, 2011 10:48 am

Hi there.
I just installed Fallout NV on my computer and I have to say that the framerate is so bad that it renders the game unplayable ( low framerate + scarce ammo + fast moving enemies = not good).

Now, usually I'd just drop some of the detail settings, but I have two Superclocked nVidia GTX 480 in SLI! The game automatically sets everything to maximum the first time you run it.

I tried...
  • updating to the latest drivers
  • typing TEMO in the console
  • various DX9 dll fixes
  • lowering the detail and resolution
  • disabling SLI

Nothing works! :banghead:

Having spent a few hours trying to sort this out now, I am extremely annoyed.
Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I run this game fine with the .dll fix and a single 480. Try disabling 1 card. And temo doesn't improve anything.

Try rolling your Nvidia drivers back to 186.18. After that version, stuttering and frame rate problems started happening to people with Fallout 3 and now NV.

But going back to 186.18 greatly improved my frame rate!

Try 2xAA 2xAF with AAF disabled forced via the nvidia control panel.

Try forcing the power consumption setting to "high performance" in a custom profile in the nVidia console. Might also have to force one of the settings on that defaults to off there too.

Hmmmm.
I think this may have something to do with the fact that I am on Windows 7 64-bit.
Maybe that DLL fix only works on 32-bit Windows...

Has anyone got it to work on Windows 7 64?

Somehow, using just 1 card has solved 85%of my issues. Ive been monitoring the load, mem, clock, ect. on another lcd. The game refuses to use more than 11% of the gpu with 1 card. With 3 cards (or 2) all cards said 40 % gpu load, and this is with no changes to graphic options. Still, with 1 card i have been able to play for several hours with no crash.

Ive noticed from time to time (with SLi enabled) the used memory on all cards will skyrocket. It eventually comes back down. Memory leak?

From an anectdotal view only, unsupported by statistical figures, it has seemed to me as if the combination of late model high end Geforces with Windows 7, 64 bit, has produced the largest number of complaints of any similar combination that gamers have had difficulty with. Many of them obtained considerable success using the workaround you tried.

Since folks like us aren't privy to inside information, we do not know why the majority of High End Geforce owners with Windows 7, either 32 bit or 64 bit, do not experience problems severely enough to visit here seeking advice. Why the d3d9.dll from nexus works for some, and not all, is also unknown. There have been a couple of thousand similar message threads to yours, and there have been half a dozen or more assorted work-arounds proposed. Those are as good as you can expect in here.

We won't know a bit sooner than anyone else when / if a major patch is released, and it won't be announced until it's already available.

Did anyone post how they fixed it?

I haven't ever taken time, I don't think, to read every comment added to your entire message thread. If only a couple of the work-arounds have appeared in here so far, run a search for one of the longer ones like yours is slowly growing into, and most of the larger ones have ended up with copies of most of the attempted fixes that the members here have been trying, and very frequently, seeing some level of success from.

Make sure you have cleared your cache. Use http://www.piriform.com/ and http://www.iobit.com/advancedwindowscareper.html. Use both, they work well together.
Try running in windowed mode at your desktop resolution.
If you lower your resolution in game, lower your desktop resolution to the same. (common issue in bethesda games)
Disable in both ffdshow configs.
Use Fallout3 tweakguide.
Chase Obsidian developers with pitchforks.

Honestly, messing with your system won't make a broken engine work more efficiently.

So, I've tried pretty much every suggestion you guys have made and still no joy.

There is also a handy list of fixes here:
http://geekmontage.com/texts/fallout-new-vegas-game-fixes-crashes-audio-issues-lag-saving/

I tried the fix that makes everyone's head disappear and that didn't help, also my GPU usage is ultra low, which seems strange...

A fresh reinstall is my only remaining option, and if that doesn't work I am going to find a corner to sit in and cry.

I have contacted Bethesda tech support and will let you know if they have any bright ideas.

Any further suggestions are still welcome!

Works fine for me now,

I removed a few audio codecs which apparently were causing 90% of my problems. the d3d9.dll as needed as well.

Check to make sure you have no codecs on your system causing problems.

Thanks for the tip, Oathium - that toatlly sorted it ! :woot:

I tried the standard FFDShow fix, but with no joy, then I found http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1135401-steam-failure/page__gopid__16615481&#entry16615481.
Using a program called Installed Codec I was able to turn off all but the Microsoft and Creative codecs. Game now runs silky smooth!

Tell me, which codecs did you have to remove? I'll probably try and work out which ones are to blame, but with 230 to go through, some pointers would be appreciated!

Thanks once again!
