Shooting birds mid air

Post » Tue Aug 10, 2010 2:07 am

Will you be able to shoot birds with arrows whilst theyre flying around? I think it would be really fun to practice my bow and arrow skills, and maybe as an unmarked repeatable quest there can be different types of birds you can kill and get feathers from, and the rarest ones would obviously be worth more! What do you think?

There might be a way to do this, but I don't expect it to be something the player is asked to do, at least not often. Birds are small and high up, arrows are thin and rare. I see arrows as being rare enough that you wouldn't want to risk blowing through a ton of them to shoot down a bird. Maybe in combination with the slow-time and zoom archery perks and slow-time dragon shout though.

I think it should be possible to shoot down a bird with an arrow, in that if your arrow happens to hit it, it should die. I would however think this an incredibly difficult task. Using a gun is one thing, and using a bow and arrow is quite another, and obviously there will be no guns. Maybe you should get an achievement given the difficulty of the task. Then again, maybe not.

How are arrows "Rare" in Skyrim? All I remember them saying is they're less common than in Oblivion where they were stupidly common and stupidly weak.

I doubt there will be any arrow shortages in Skyrim. You just won't be carrying around over 300 arrows everywhere you go when it only takes 46 to clear out an entire dungeon.

"To reflect this improvement, arrows will become more expensive and a lot less common."

"Lot less common" meaning rare. Or rarer, at least. Every piece of information regarding archery has brought up the fact that arrows are going to be much less common. And if they are that much harder to come by, I think using a bunch of them hoping to hit a bird out of the air falls well into the "cost" portion of a cost / benefit consideration.

I think they'll be there for atmosphere and nothing else. If they can be harmed, what about dragon shouting them? Imagine Fus Roh Da'ing a flock of birds!

Honestly, if i'm able to shoot moving birds out of the sky with a bow and arrow (unless it's a fluke shot), i'd say they've screwed up BIG TIME on making the archery seem realistic.

I would however like to see birds (particularly ravens and crows) perch ontop of buildings, and you should be able to shoot and kill them with no problem.

It would be awesome how annoyed people would get:

OK, just get over to this rock, hide behind it - no, he hasn't seen me. Awesome. OK, line up the shot... and FIRE!

*Arrow flies and hits bird, alerting the bandit*

What the- I HATE THIS GAME!

What? How will they have screwed up?

Surely actually shooting at them whether theyre flying or perched is even more realistic than shooting just perched? :S

I want archery to feel realistic and be difficult. Hitting a moving person at a distance should be hard enough, let alone a bird in the sky.

Doing it with a gun is one thing... but a bow and arrow? ...come on...

It could totally be done... yes, it would be difficult, but people can do it in reality, why couldn't they do it in TES?

Just cast fireballs :flamethrower: at them, or just be lazy and cast lightning. :shocking: On the other hand wouldnt it be odd to see birds with the whole Dragons flying around everywhere...

I'm not completely against the idea... I just think it would have to be incredibly difficult to feel realistic.

If I manage to shoot a bird out of the sky after 30-40 attempts, fine. If i'm able to do it nearly every time, they've screwed up archery completely.

Unless you're just that good with your bow and arrow. I'm sure after a bit of practice and getting the timing down for nailing birds out of the sky you'd be able to do it on a regular basis if you so chose.

It should be easy! Just lock on like in Red Dead, and pull the trigger! Who needs an archery skill? (By the way, I'm totally kidding)

considering how high most birds fly and thier speed it would be nigh impossible to hit anything but the slowest low flying birds. remember that arrows are not aerodynamic from the side and as they travel up wind speed and wind direction can change more than once throwing your arrow off target completely. its alot different shooting something straight up in the sky than it is near the same level as you. even in baseball wind direction and speed can have a tremendous affect on how far they travel. im hoping they do archery like MB warband.

yea and you can get back at least 30 of those 46

i dont see the "rare arrows" being a problem

on topic its a great feat but i have seen a guy shoot an asprin out of the air on Top Shots on the history channel its nasty

Are spells affected by gravity? If not, arrow trajectory problems do not apply, and the question remains, can we fireball birds in mid air?
[ said this before, the idea of shooting the circling birds down gives me proper Turok 2 : Seeds of Evil nostalgia ]
