Shopkeepers Gold

Post » Tue Jul 26, 2011 6:10 am

Can anybody please tell me what shopkeepers carry the most amount of gold. I have got some really expensive items that I don't need, so was looking to sell. In the past it has never been a problem as I made money with potions but I have a few items worth 5,000 + and selling them to shopkeepers for 800 is not good business sense.

Thanks.

Thanks, I had a very quick scroll though and could only see the most gold a merchant carries is 2,000 gold, so if I understand it right, this means that the most I can get for an item is 2,000. If that is in fact the case why value items more than 2,000? an item valued at 5,000 is pointless, because you are never going to get more than 2,000 gold for it. Unless I'm missing the point?

When you get higher mercantile skill shopkeepers get more available gold, disposition also affects prices. I'm not sure of the specifics because I've never really bartered with merchants, I usually just accept what they offer me  But yeah, the idea is that you won't be able to sell an item worth 5,000 for it's original price.

Your understanding is correct, but there is a point to items being valued at 5000 or more - you will notice that you do indeed have to PAY that much if you want to purchase such an item. A shopkeeper who carries the Awesome xxx of Doom will happily charge you 5000 for it, then buy it back from you for 800. Lol. Actually I like the way it works as money soon gets to be too easy anyway. I like my character poor, so will sometimes intentionally sell her enchanted bow for 800 and buy it back for almost 8000. We simulate paying property taxes and such to help keep her poor as well. Otherwise she'd get too lazy to even pick up a gold coin.

Hmm... So if an item is worth 10,000 (which there is in the game), the absolute most you could sell that item for is 20% of the value. But If you had a item worth 1,000 and you sold that for 800, you are selling it for 80% of it's value. To me it just seems inconsistent and flawed.

Pretty much. Acadian is spot on when he mentions money coming too easy later in the game. When Haa-Rei first started out he struggled to find enough gold to pay for his sword repairs, now his casual shoes alone are worth 1000 gold. The inconsistency of the merchant gold helps slow it all down so you can't get super rich straight away, I agree that it could have been done better though. If your playing on PC I'm sure there'll be mods and such that help.

I'd say just ignore the high "values" on things you're selling. They're nothing but the game's way of telling you that one item is worth more than another.

Those are "retail" prices. A merchant is not going to pay you "retail" for a high-priced item. Consider the merchant's "gold amount" as his wholesale price limit.

Unless you want the item I'd just sell the item anyways even at a "loss" (which really isn't because you got the item free). You'll be rolling in gold quick enough anyways.
