Short Story Contest

Post » Sat Jul 17, 2010 11:48 pm

I have a few questions. how original would it be to take a side unmarked quest thats very obsure from morrowind and give it a big story?

another question I have is can it be a collaborated writting? because me and my girlfriend are writting our entry for the contest right now. its one story but two people are writting it. or if thats a problem just use one screen name for credit?

As to your originality qualms, so long as it is a good story, I don't mind. My current novelette, Fallen Champion, is an Oblivion quest with some major changes and twists. I'll give you the same advice someone else gave me: make sure you change it enough that it would still be interesting for those that have played it. And from the sound of things, you should be fine.

And your collaborative writing issue is fine too. I don't really see a problem with it, it's not really cheating... In fact, I would say that unless you are each following different characters, that it would be a detriment. The feel would be off; I can tell if one writer tries to write someone elses work (I once found a fan copy of the last Harry Potter book online before it was officially released, it said that it was a leaked copy of J.K.'s real story, yet it felt very different. I got through about ten chapters while confused, until I finally admitted something was wrong and checked it with Yahoo. The writer was good, I'll admit, but it was different, and it showed. What I'm saying is that it would probably be a negative impact on your writing, unless you each used a different character, in which case it would be epic ;) Long parenthesis)

EDIT: Exactly what Redsrock said ;)

It's a fanfic contest, so you'd be fine. In fact, I usually enjoy stories that are based off of obscure quests/items/things in-game.

Exactly. Even if you don't win, you'll still be getting good, honest feedback. That should be any writer's dream.

:lmao: Of course.

Don't feel bad, and do indeed keep trying. We will all do our best to help, for the only way to improve is to practice. That and get some good feedback and critique to know what to improve on. And reading a lot. Well, there are a lot of ways to get better, but the best is all three :D

Regardless, we digress. We are happy to have you redmer, but does anyone have any thoughts on the contest? The purpose of this thread is for ideas after all. Ah, and go ahead and sign up on http://s1.zetaboards.com/Feyfolken/index/, kindly set up by Lady Nerevar. Please refrain from posting in the Stories section just yet, I am still wondering if the Admin should post all the threads there, or if we should open it up for anyone to post, but only the Admin's get voted on. Hmm...

PS If anyone is wondering, no that is not me in my avatar. That would be Isaac Asimov, the gentleman I have quoted in my sig.

Ah, I can't keep my wonderful evolution of morality in my sig anymore along with the Feyfolken link and Tamriel Rebuilt :(. Oh well.

I say you get judges for each category, if possible.

I would say that there should be enough time for people to write the first time, but I would like to have the next contest start immediately after the previous one ends. Perhaps a weekend in between for us judges to take a break. Either monthly or every two weeks would be nice, but as was with the number of judges, I am clueless on this one. Anyone got any opinions?

The time limit for submitting is interesting. Since this is the first attempt, and the plan (from what I've understood anyway) is to keep them continuing on a regular basis, I'd say a month might be on the long side. Two weeks maybe? With the option of extending a week if not many entries come in? You never know, you may end up with more than any of us anticipate...

Who has expressed an interest in judging? Why don't we create a list of judges, and rotate them, between competitions. So if we had say 6-10, let 3-5 (dependent on number of entries) judge this time, then the other 3-5 judge next time? Give them all a chance to feel useful ;)

Are the writers going to remain anonymous until after the awards and criticisms are given?
I would really prefer it if the judges had no idea who they were judging until after the have spoken and the same for the rest of the readers. I'm not sure if there was an answer to this already but I'm just asking again.

Does your girl have an account on this forum? If she don't the answer is simple, because only you would be the online alias! :D

Collaborative stories can be fun to write though Darkhom, right Reds?

if we are to keep it anonymous then only the admin gets to post stories. i did consider making a new section for stories that are not for the contest where anyone could post their work for critique.

from what i know judges: Redsrock, Darkom95, Evil_Pigeon

Hei, I figured i could try myself with Short Stories. (I voted for 5,000-7,500 words, but now i honestly believe that 3,000 -5,000 is just enough)
So, umm, can i join too?

Have you guys came to agreements about rules?

Terribly sorry, I was out fighting twenty to forty year old black belts :ninja:

The time limit, being that they are consecutive, is not a problem. The judge swapping thing sounds like a good idea, but we only have about four judges to my knowledge. I am hesitant to let anyone as good as or worse than me judge...

No you can't join :flame: Nah, kidding, feel free. Just register and send my profile your story. I'll give it to the judges and eventually post it via the admin account. The rules are very rather simple; the biggest problem is the rating. I like Lady Nerevar's system, but if anyone else has some ideas...

Redsrock, Shades, Evil, myself if I have to, and I have a few others with less experience.

As to collaborative, I stand by my statement that I would want them to do different characters. And yes, anonymity is a must; stories only get authors after all voting.

I'll get back to you on those rules soon ;)

Rating system up in the judges only section. Feel free to read so you all understand how the judges and general populace votes.

Remember, if any of you have your stories done for some reason, just send them to my account for now.

Sorry RedsRock, I was unaware that was actually only visible by judges, I'll post a copy in the civilian section as well, but you should get at least mod status soon. Wait, I can do it now... Hold on :P

Thanks Lady Nerevar.

Thanks Burnt, I thought I remember you saying so, but I must have forgotten after all those times I asked for confirmation on judges :P Easy mistake to make, easier to fix. We'll add you to the moderator section on the forum, and list you as a judge. Welcome aboard, and thanks again.
