Shorter Tutorial?

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:08 pm

The tutorials have generally set up the story to some degree, so they should definitely be there. You only have so sit through them once anyway, since you can save right before you leave/finalize your character. You only have to sit through it once so long as you know how to save; no need to shorten it.

The Oblivion "tutorial" was more of a prologue then it was a tutorial. It set the stage for the entire game, and skipping it would have had drastic impact on the story. Same can be said about Fallout 3... if you skipped the whole part inside Vault 101 you would have no idea whats going on. So if Bethesda decides to make the tutorial into a prologue again, then it shouldn't be skipable. With that said, I have no objection to tutorial that's close to those of Morrowind and New Vegas... both of which were short, and just set you free with an objective to complete.

I'd like a tutorial that is skippable, but then the skipped part shouldn't contain many story elements, like the Emperor's death in Oblivion.

I wouldn't mind having another long one, as long as I could skip it if I wanted to.

No, the tutorial in Oblivion was actually pretty brilliant, the only reason why it became annoying was because it wasn't skip-able.

I've never had an issue with the length of the tutorial.... Now KotOR, they had long tutorials... Still I think no matter the length of the tutorial it sets the game up storywise. I don't think I've ever skipped a tutorial if it was an option, it would seem like a waste...

I say skipable. I use alternate start mods for Oblivion & FO3 because the tutorials in both games (especially FO3) are just too long for my tastes.

I'd like for the tutorial to be skippable and not have any real importance to the story (DF style).

When you've already made one character and probably a few others going through that same tutorial gets pretty old.

Skippable, but if you do it you get basic starter gear. If you skip you will probably have found similar gear in the same amount of time. The main issue isn't how long the intro/tutorial dungeon is, its the fact that its the place Bethesda sets up the story. Many people were frustrated that you could literally cut off the main quest if you didn't give documents to the Blades Agent before deleting them / misplacing them. Maybe have an open world conflict that you can run away from or fight, and you are rewarded for staying, but if you leave you can pick up the story later on with only minor differences.

I dunno, I liked MW's. It was very short, and you went through the bureaucratic process of being known that you are a citizen moving to MW. And after the 5min of introduction, you are done and given the proverbial "good, have fun, and try not to die, worm."

I kinda liked the way Daggerfall handled it. They laid out all the story details and then set you in a dungeon. Fight your way out, with the occasional tip. If you knew your way to the exit, there was nothing stopping you from rushing straight there.

I like the morrowind tutorial.

I wouldn't mind it if it was shorter but definitely make sure at the end that you can make any final changes to the character just in case you found out by accident that you gave your Female Nord Fish lips.

In my opinion, the tutorial should not have any part of the story in it. The story should begin right after the tutorial, but not in it.

Aye allow it to be skippable if the game does have a tutorial beginning. In the case of Oblivion, it would have put you just outside of the sewer gate with the Amulet in your pocket. In the case of Morrowind... well... Morrowind didn't have much of a tutorial besides getting off the boat. "Press this key for movement, press this key for activate. Good luck!" *Pushes character up the ladder and off the boat*

Oblivion had a great tutorial as it brought you right into the plot. I do have to admit though that after making lots of characters it really did start to become a pain.

I do enjoy Bethesda's tutorials as well, it's just a pain after the first couple of playthroughs.

Oblivion's tutorial was important to the main storyline, if it's your first time, you have to watch it, and I don't mind having a linear first 20 minutes if it introduces the story well. If it's not your first time, you should've made a save before exiting the sewers when you can change everything about your class to make new characters easily.

As long as it fits to the story. In Oblivion it could be longer because events were unfolding around you from the start, in Morrowind it just dumped you off the boat. They could make it skippable though in case you've already done it.

That was able to be done by making a save before exiting the sewers in Oblivion, since it gave you a second chance to change any of your starting character choices. Not was easy as giving you the choice though.

I see people saying that the tutorial in OB wasn't skippable. But it was! You just had to save the game before the sewer exit and then create new characters using it.
