No Shortswords?

Post » Sun Jul 03, 2011 4:14 pm

I thought I would point this out about the UI.

If you look right http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izIKymAODt4&feature=related from 00:12 - 00:16, it shows an Iron Sword and a Steel Sword. This worries me. In past Elder Scrolls games you had weapons, types of weapons, the type of material the weapon is made out of, and the style of weapon. Ex: Iron Dagger, Iron Shortsword, Iron Longsword, and Iron Claymore. Now I'm afraid its just down to: Iron Dagger, Iron Sword, and Iron Claymore.

Even though it may seem I'm nitpicking (i.e. I hate nitpicking) this seems to lessen in some way customization of fighting styles.

Thoughts? Concerns? Comments?

There are short swords, they just don't have their own class (like in OB, it's just blade, not short blade long blade)

You can have any sword you want, as long as its an elven glass longsword.

It's a possibility I guess. What was shown in the videos could also just be place-holders for unfinished elements of the game.

When Todd talked about that Elven-Glass "sword" did he say "sword" or " longsword"? Just wondering. I really hope they don't exclude shortswords from Skyrim :cryvaultboy:

Oh my, this is worse than those people that think that because Ashley didn't specifically say greaves as an armour slot, they must be merged with armour.

This is the same thing, since it doesn't say long, they can't be short.
Nothing is confirmed, no one here knows if there are short swords. What I can tell you is that there is a good chance they are out, but not confirmed.

I'm really trying not to nitpick. Its just Shortswords have been part of the Elder Scrolls for a long time so I don't why they would all of a sudden take them out (if shortswords are out) of the game?

Great logic you get on this forum. So you are just gonna doubt the existence of everything you didnt see in the demo? What, 99.9% of the game?

It's not what he didn't see. It's the fact that all the swords we have seen, which were previously always designated "Long" or "Short", no longer have a designation.

There's no reason to change "Longsword" to "Sword" if there are still shortswords, in other words.

Ooooh I see. So this basically means every little detail in these games has its own fanclub thats going to go mad when they change their respective dominion (in this case shortswords, of all thing)?

I would hardly call things like greaves and shortswords "little details", but yes.

Yeah? well up ypurs too buddy :P

Short swords offer a completely different style of gameplay to longswords so of course people aren't going to applaud when it is taken out (I doubt it is though, people still haven't gotten over spears so they probably aren't going to try and piss more people off)

Really? Get some perspective. In the scheme of things, they really aren't a big deal.

"Little details" are the poly counts of grass, or even grass itself. Or the textures of weapons. Or whether or not we can pick up the lantern on the wall. Entire equipment slots and whole weapon categories are not little details.

I never used shortswords and I don't care about greaves. Don't misunderstand me.

maybe they just added a regular size sword to the game so there is even more options. dagger, short sword, sword, long sword, claymore. but i wouldnt be surprised if they did take out short and long swords.

i will be mad too if they take it out i always use a silver shortsword

You do realize that alpha and beta versions of games are different from the final version, especially for small details as that. That was also a DEMO, as in it's a demonstration of the game, not "final copy what you see is what you get, if it's not there it's not in final release." The character in the demo also had 999 health which is incredibly unlikely for regular gameplay without cheating or modding so by your logic, you should expect your character to reach 999 health. I seriously don't get why people go by that logic, "Oh some small detail I didn't see in demo isn't going to be in final release, because it wasn't shown in demo."

How does playing with shortswords vary from playing with longswords?

Whole weapon category? Hardly. That would be the entire one handed skill removed, not a weapon that lies somewhere between two other. And a loss of an armour slot? Compared to a huge living world with 300 hours of gameplay, it's a detail.

I never implied you cared about either of those. Don't misunderstand me.
