Should beast races be replaced by something original and les

Post » Thu Dec 01, 2011 2:39 pm

I never really played as a member of the beast race. In Morrowind I did not like their animations. Though the walking animation for all races were kind of strange, the ones for beast races were much worse, so that discouraged me. In Oblivion, I did not really feel any urge to try them either. Despite this, I think that they should stay in TES. I also think that they are kind of unique. I know that classical AD&D world has some kind of feline race (The Rakshasa, but they are demons more than a mortal race) and a some lizard like races (namely the lizard folk, who are similar to the Argoninas more or less just in name). The only other game that has similar races is Everquest, as far as I know. So I would not say that these two races are all that clishé. Or for that matter that being a bit of clishé is bad (I really do not want my elves out of TES because they appear virtually in every fantasy RPG).

And as for the future of beast races in TES, I hope that in TES V we will see both Argonins and Khajiit, who will once more have some unique features, like more bestial legs (sorry, I still cannot remember the proper term for this), this time, though with much smoother animations that would actually show Khajiit to be nimble, agile and graceful. Claws and things like this would be welcomed too.

Well, what would be an original race? Come up with some, I'd like to hear it.

you want original? make a game without humans at all or human like races that would be original like i hardly ever see such a game with only other races and no humans involved at all =3

its very easy tought leave the beast races for those who wana play a beast race and if you dont like it just dont play it just get a nord or a impirial get a axe and kill them if you like but elderscroll is about choises and freedom and now we got a choise for every 1 a race for you a race for me etc

I personally think that Bethesda should add more Beast Races, or more variants of the current ones. That is just my opinion, though.

I think we should only have the various forms when the race's provinces are visited. A game in Elsweyr, for example, should have various Khajiit forms. I don't think there should be such a focus on the race that isn't the main race in the game. Dunmer, for example, were really fleshed out in Morrowind. Not much added in the other games.

As far as the various Khajiiti breeds, I think it would be best if TES V′s CharGen was so strong and the races so customisable that even though you would only have one Khajiit race you could customise your character so much that you could give him a unique look according to what breed you imagine him/her to be. Of course, if the game takes place in Elsweyr, then we could see even the less humanoid version (the ones that look like house cats or the big ones used an mounts). I can hardly see those outside of their province, though.

I could understand perhaps having both Morrowind and Oblivion Khajiit breeds, but I just don't feel that the resources should be spent on one of the less important races of the featured province. (There's far too many breeds for one race, imo)

The thing is, Imperials made sense. There was a whole province no one hailed from. Removing the beast races is just a dumb idea.

WHOA. Hircine advocating for Imperials. Has the world come to an end?

Why does this thread exist? Its pointless, there is a lot of things I don't use or think is pointless in TES, but I don't advocate for its Abolishment. Having things that you don't use gives the game depth. If the Devs got rid of everything that no one wanted we'd be left with Adoring Fan in Sheogoraths uniform singing Living LaVida Voca in Sean Beans voice while dancing admidst an extinct Volcano with cliff racers flying in circles above his head.

Seriously if you don't like an Element of TES svck it up because someone else does.

I love Argonians.

BTW they aren't exactly original. They were used http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/. They've been around for about as long as Bethesda.

What can I say? I love to hate 'em! :)

That's why it died. If you look back, everyone murdered this guy for a while until it died.

I wouldn't exactly call those Argonians...

Anyway, there's always some kind of similarity to something else. Pure originality is pretty much impossible. Everything is inspired by something. Argonians are just less inspired than most other things.

Sorry but complaining about the beast races being unoriginal while there are 7 more that are basically just human recolors with funny ears sounds a bit hypocritical.

Another thread bumped by the Oblivion guy...ugh.

Anyhoo, Khajiit are problably the most diverse race in Tamriel, having many different species of Khajiit in Elsweyr. Bethesda has just been too lazy to show any other than the Suthay-Raht

I don't think removing the beast races is a good idea. just make them better.

to me I'd like to see them be more beastly (in appearance) & less upright.

How about a compromise when you begin the game you have the option of being more human or beast like?

Sure, I could be happy with a checkbox or a slider (variable beastliness) in char creation

How about a compromise when you begin the game you have the option of being more human or beast like?

NWN(Neverwinter Nights) 2 had this. You chose a race(Human, Dwarven, Orcish, Elvin, or Halfling) than chose a subrace. Elves was Moon, Sun, Drow, and Wild.
I could easily see choosing you race then subrace in TES.
Elf, Argonian, Human.
Then Elf branches into Orc, Dunmer, Altmer, and Bosmer.
Human branches into Nord, Imperial, Redguard, and Breton.
Khajiit and Argonian Branches into those various breeds: Oblivion Style, Morrowind Style, Human/Mer-like with beast features like spines, ears and Tail.
The benefits would be mostly Aesthetics.
But What I see here is Warrior(Orc), Mage(Altmer), Theif(Bosmer), and NonSpecialized Class(Dunmer) types.
I put in brackets beside each class the Mer/Elvin Subrace that corresponds with the class. If you get where I'm going.

So, a system kinda like this?

  • Man
    • Breton
    • Redguard
    • Nord
    • Imperial

  • Mer
    • Altmer
    • Bosmer
    • Dunmer
    • Orsimer

  • Beast
    • Argonian
      • Subcategory 1
      • Subcategory 2
      • Subcategory 3

    • Khajiit
      • Ohmes-raht
      • Suthay-raht
      • Cathay

I chose those 3 kinds of Khajiit because they're the three archetypes. Suthay-raht are like the ones we see in Oblivion & Morrowind (probably more like Morrowind's), Ohmes-raht are like Men but with fur, and Cathay are strong and tall. So you have your shorter & quick ones, your average ones, and your strong & tall ones. The issue with the "Thief" "Warrior" Mage" Balanced" is that the other races don't have that. The Men have 2 warrior races, a balanced race, and a mage race. And the Beasts have... well they're unique. Female Argonians are known to be more intelligent than the males, and the males are known to be faster and have more agility. So Argonians have "Mage"" and "Thief" already in their race. Archeins were a tribe of Argonians who sold other Argonians as slaves (could imagine them being more attuned to being balanced, like imperials), and the Naga tribe are gigantic, more serpentine ones, and they'd make good warriors.

Pretty much, yeah. It would be nice, but I can't imagine this actually being in a TES game. Its just to awsome for Bethesda, but who knows...?
Edit: We should probably move this to the Suggestion thread, so the DEVs will look at it at least. Considering the Title of this Topic.

They'd be easy to mod into the game if they don't include them. Especially because since the Fallout 3 engine you can change an NPCs height and weight in their individual menu. So all people don't have to be the same size. You can also add unique meshes to NPCs, which opens up even more opportunities.

That really sounds good, thumbs up to that.
That way you'd have 4 SPECIES each with races... would make a lot more sense really than calling them all races despite clearly being different species.

EDIT: the only thing I'd "kick" is the whole "mage, warrior, thief" separation, it really doesn't need that in my opinion. Though I'd suggest a system that is entirely "class-free" or at least does not REQUIRE one.

EDIT 2: Oh yea and instead of splitting it into man, mer, beast better split them into argonian and khajiit, each of them is a individual species split into races for each.

Agree. "Lizard Men" have been a staple in many RPG products, whether it's a table-top or computer game. They made it weird in Morrowind, though, by giving them those weird feet and making them walk around strangely. I'm glad they have more humanoid feet in Oblivion. Tails sticking out of the back of armor still looks cartoony, though. Also, I think I saw.. um.. clevage on the female argonians, though, and that was just strange. Strange is not always bad I suppose and it did make me chuckle. Uh oh. I think I'm tempted to go make a female argonian and see what I can do with it lol.

What you sure are crazy i hated that they removed the handsome feets and khajiit being unable to wear full face helmets and the TAIL why the TAIL so cute! bah get all the morrowind looking khajiits back

Well that's the reason why. If there was no grain to go against than they probably wouldn't be as interesting.

In my opinion, in response to the inital question, no.
Bethesda should retain the audacity to follow established lore.
Just my opinion though.
