Should beast races be replaced by something original and les

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 8:07 pm

The Altmer are arrogant 7ft freaks with gold skin who tend towards sorcery. The High Elves in LOTR are a race of good-looking grey-eyed exiles who live forever and are adept with words and wisdom.

And the altmer hates anyone who isn't altmer. Oh, and that includes any altmer who isn't perfect, because they're not really altmer either.

khajit and argonians remind me of my cat chloe and my friends pet iguana. animal races are lazy and silly on the face of it. personally i would love to see a magical virus that mutates all of them into more original races. mass effect had original races like the krogan why cant bethesda do it?

Well khajiit and Argonians WERE slaves, so they cannot be lazy, Argonians are basically almost exactly like the blue people from the movie avatar. (worship trees)!

Except they're not kitty space hippies, and they TRULY NEED those Hist, not just because it's part of nature.

To address the title of the topic: HELL NO! I just learned i can't play with an elf character in Dragon Age 2, if i couldn't play with a khajiit character in TES V i'd just ignore it's existence. Sure modders would add the beast races pretty soon, but if Bethesda wouldn't do the beast race animations for the "extra parts" (ears and tails) i doubt they'd look as "real" as they do in earlier games. Lore wise they've been in the games since the beginning (as far as i know, i've only played Oblivion and Morrowind, and seen a screenshot of a khajiit character from Daggerfall), there's no reason get rid of them now.

Not only are the beast races great, there are more to come when Akiviri races come to the table. Yes, lots and lots of snake people - excites me to death, even if it's old an trite (which it's not).

No they don't need replacing, they're established parts of the Lore. But other creatures could certainly be added. Maybe an insect-like creature with a communal "hive mind", or a cephalopod (octopus-like) creature that's amphibious? Obviously neither would be playable races, but they wouldn't have to be on the enemy side either.

The choice of who's a playable race in any game in the series is a separate consideration, based on constraints in the story. In Oblivion for example, you don't get to play a Dremora, because they're all on the other side. Another story line could maybe only be playable as a beast race - just don't expect that in a commercial release, as too many people only want to play as themselves.

There's the question of choice. Tomb Raider gives you the choice of exactly one character to play as, and it's not done too badly. Do you really need a huge range of playable races? Would less playable races let the non-playable ones be more diverse in shapes and sizes, and if they were, would everyone complain about not being able to play as a Khajiit any more?

That would be foolish. The diversity of the Khajiit race has yet to be touched upon, and Elsweyr would make a great setting for a TES game.

If they add races, they should add something like the tiger people of Akavir or the Sload (they looke disgusting). Or even the snake-people...

I know i would, loudly. BioWare seems to think like that, as DA2 you can play only with a human character. Of course BioWare and Bethesda design very different games so i don't think this will happen in TEV. Bethesda's games are about freedom, and that includes race selection, whereas BioWare's games are about the story, so much that they sacrifice some of that freedom to make a better story. More to the point, not making beast races playable in TES V would cause me to buy it only after they've been modded in, not including beast races at all would cause me not to buy it.

Beast races aren't silly...this question is...

All jokes aside, the beast races makes TES far better and more interesting.

I exclusively play the beast races in TES...in any game for that matter. (Khajiits to the bitter end!)

Why would anyone want to play a game where there are only humans (or near humans ie elves, dwarfs, etc) ???

To answer your question in one word: No

I don't think we need another LoTR clone when it comes to races (only humans, elves and dwarves) and TES wouldn't be TES without giant walking lizards and cats (especially giant walking cats that offer you 'sugar').
And when you say that krogan are original, they aren't really. If you look, you'll see that they are just another always chaotic-evil lizard-thing race. At least Argonians mix things up by not being a race of only chaotic-evil lizards that their only existance is to be minions for the evil guy hiding in a cave. That by itself makes them unique.

And khajiit are a little more original than what many games have when they mean 'cat-people'. When they say this, they usually mean 'people with cat's ears'. TES took it one step further and made them actual 'cat-people', minus the fear of water :) .

So no, they don't need replacing.

Beast races have been in Elder Scrolls for the longest time. It just wouldn't make sense in getting rid of them. TES was founded around pen and paper RPG games and even LARP. Both have beast races, as is the reason they're in TES.

Absolutely agree, every RPG has elves, dwarfs, orcs and all the overdone humanoid races. But none have anything like TESes beast races.

Or even setting TES V on the other side of Nirn. Sure it would more than likely get rid of the typical races seen in the past ES games. But it would explore a side of the lore we've never really seen, only heard. And introduce an entirely new world, races and cultures. But you're idea of adding them in is good too. I've been wanting to know more about those races ever since I first heard of them.

No. Beast races are Original and they only looked silly in Oblivion.
Bethesda is too smart to take away the uniqueness of their series.

Yeaaa, take away the beast races, oh and while your at it take away the magic, the mideval period, and set it in a office building where u have to make reports everyday how about that?

You got a problem with fantasy games go to your job, and in the likelyhood u dont have one, go play something else.

No I don't play Khajiits but I still find them interesting as a race and I love Argonians. In fact I think they need to add in Sloads too since there are technically only 2 "magic races."

Khajiits and Argonians are part of TES. If you kill them, you kill a part of the lore.

In Vanilla Oblivion I always played as an Argonian (because they have underwater breathing and, of course, they look cool). I didn't use other race because I don't know how to use the FaceGen correctly (and I DON'T WANT a default face of the default races, they burn my eyes).

I could rant about that statement all day long. But I won't, it's really off topic.

Has anyone actually agreed with the op, lol?

I agree you can't just remove them. They have been there since the beggining. It's like removing the nose off everyones face ....... it wouldn't be the same.
