Don't go to Solstheim before level 15-20. Apart from that, it's simply a case of how much shouts are worth to you. Main quest gets some really useful ones, if you can do without them do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Lore.

And, not to be misdirected, not because you should do anything related to the main quest. You can go there at level 1, there's just a much bigger chance that you'll be owned by monsters there if you're not too familiar with the game.

Aside from that, definitely no. You can do whatever you want, whenever you want. The only exception is Dragonborn's main quest. I might be wrong with this so someone correct me if I am, but I don't think you can start that one unless you start and do 1st quests related to Skyrim's vanilla main quest.

Chaka ZG is correct. You need to finish "The Way of the Voice" before you can begin the Dragonborn main quest. However, you can do Dragonborn's side quests without doing any of Skyrim's main quest.

There is some additionak (brief) dialog if you finish Skyrim's MQ before doing the Dragon Born MQ but otherwise there is really no need to do one before the other.

I just killed the dragon with the blades girl and she wants to meet me somewhere. I'm scared to go through the main quest b/c other TES games sort of svck you in and it ends quickly.
