Should Bethesda add an alternative dialogue menu?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 7:23 am

So, most of the Fallout fans are in love with what they've seen from Fallout 4. However, the game's new Mass Effect-esque dialogue menu has sparked plenty of controversy.

Personally, I dislike it. Most would say to give the game a chance first, but here's the two major points I have in response.

1. I've tried it already in ME and pretty much hated it.
2. We've already seen how ambiguous it can be at times. "Get Food"....... Really? That could be a command, a request, it could even be me saying that I'm off to explore for some food.

I vote for an optional menu that writes out what we say fully. What do you all think?

No, I'd rather Bethesda not apologize for their design choices, and make a system that stands on its own merits. I know it's different, and I can't fault anyone for liking the old way, but I feel that designing two different dialog modes to placate everyone makes it look like the devs aren't confident in their own decisions.

That's debatable, since Bethesda has shown they'll change things if people complain enough. The problem is that most people assume nothing will happen so they don't bother with voicing their opinion. We need to be more vocal if we want to change this.

They did it with Broken Steel though. I'd like to know, do you actually enjoy the new system? Or are you in favor of it because of what you've stated above.

No. Aslong as thumbnail gives a good enough hint in whats going to be said then thats fine. The "get food" reply was obviously going to end with callofdutyworths geting food. Someone is bound to make a mod to revert the convo system after a few months.

For Broken Steel, do you mean that they opened up the ending and changed companion dialog for the purifier? That was a response to backlash after the game came out and people got a feel for it; Bethesda's generally good about addressing those kinds of mistakes creatively with DLC. Or, if the mistake is too ingrained into the balance of the game, like dialog (or Oblivion's level scaling for an existing example), they'll try something new with the next game. But they don't really do thst based on audience reaction before release; anythimg they'd change would be from how the playtesters felt about it, like parts of the Skyrim Civil War.

I do like the new system. I'm glad to see the voiced protagonist, and really glad to see they've got a dialog system that doesn't lock you into a mode; you can move sround and do other things, hence why they went with assigning dialog to face buttons instead of a list. Of course I'll be upset if the dialog suffers a lot from "that's not what I meant to say!" Or the conversations *still* feel awkward, but I didn't have that problem with Mass Effect and I'm not too afraid here.

I utterly detest Bioware-style dialogue menus. So I would love it if we had an option to get rid of it. But, as Yan L says, it ain't gonna happen, not even in an expansion. It's way too much work.

My hope now is that fans complain loudly enough to persuade Bethesda to ditch the system before they make TES VI.

Well it obviously pertained to food in some way, but the problem is that it could've been delivered in any way. Sometimes even in a manner which the player has no intent to do. "Get Food" could come out as a polite request, or a passive aggressive command (which it kinda ended up being).

Also, the whole "someone will make a mod" mentality will not really help Bethesda. If they feel others will just fix things later then that's a serious problem.

I absolutely hate this system, but since there's next to no way they're going back on it the least they can do is to do it the wayhttp://omgn.com/images/upload/review_deus_ex_human_revolution/2011-08-29_00002.jpg handled it with a word describing the tone of what you're going to say and once you hover over it, they show exactly what's going to be coming out of your mouth.

I'm hoping you can still make first person quest dialog the old way by ticking a box in the Geck. Because not being able to add voice clips for the player in quest mods is going to be an issue.

I feel like this is going to end up worse than Mass Effect somehow. Why? Because Commander Shepard was a somewhat defined character. You could guess what he/she would say in a certain situation, and how they'd feel about it. This goes even more for Geralt from The Witcher 3. These are strong, defined characters with personalities. But the truncated dialogue for a blank slate is just kinda bad imo. How are we supposed to know what will happen based off two or three words?

Yeah, I'd like either text only or voice, but not both voice and text fully written out. That would be pretty redundant.

-_-

Just as a blanket statement, mods are not going to always save us. Not every mod will be quality, and sometimes it just won't be possible to do certain things. Mods should not be a reason for Bethesda to not include something in their product. I want Bethesda to take responsibility for this one, because I really love Fallout, and, in spite of everything, I loved Fallout 3 just as much as the others. This would be a huge negative for me. However, I do like the cinematic camera angles in the dialogue.

that simple "get food" is just what you select. after you do your then going to get your dialogue. the only real difference is it's not going to be written out on the screen in big green letter in a black box. it's still going to be there, your just going to have to listen instead of listening and reading like before. in theory, the new system should be more immersive.

the game's coming out in 4 months, far too late to change the conversation system. they'd have to delay the game several months to do that.

I never had a problem with ME's dialog system personally.

I'd rather this than reading the entire thing, only to hear my character say EXACTLY what I just read again. That would get on my nerves VERY quick.

I pretty much had the opposite issue. I couldn't get 3 hours into Mass Effect without the dialogue making me stop. Something about it was terrible.

I can count on one hand the number of things I like about the new system over the old system:

...

Um... Hold on. This is harder than I thought.

... I guess it'll lack the weird forced eye contact in horrible lighting that made it so you were talking to two glowing demon eyes in the dark and couldn't look away.

...

That's it though.

The male SS has already a partly defined background which is military and if he was fighting thr Chinese hes bound to be a tad rough and serious. if you watch the e3 footage he sounds like a guy who has seen some bad things and is fed up.

That's all up in the air though. This is unless Bethesda decides to fully flesh out the story of the PC. This is acceptable in a game like TW3 where Geralt literally has entire books for us to get to know him, but in this game I fail to see how we can establish any sense of personality. This goes even more because Bethesda probably wanted to tread carefully to not impact the roleplayers too much.

No option for "I don't care?"

This isn't as black and white as the poll indicates- and if forced between the two, I chose "no" because I have no qualms about the new system over the old one. None. It's different from the old one, but that doesn't make it better or worse.
