Should Bethesda monitor how we play?

Post » Thu Jun 27, 2013 5:57 am

Do you think Bethesda should give us the option to allow them to retrieve information on how we play the game?

For example;

- How naughty or nice we are.

- What skills we use.

- What factions we identify with.

- What areas we prefer to explore.

- How much time we spend playing.

- How much we steal.

- What we most commonly kill.

- Who we marry.

- How we die.

- What mods we use.

.. Basically any kind of metadata.

Maybe they could compile it all into a database for the community to check out, where you could find the average playtime, total gold earned, total enemies slain.. ect ect..

I'm interested in knowing the opinion of the community regarding this.

Do you think it would be the only responsible thing for Bethesda to do? or do you think they are better off not knowing? Please discuss..

No. If they want the info, I'll give it to them.

That's what BioWare did with Dragon Age Origins. The result was Dragon Age 2

I would have thought they already gathered player metrics stuff. But mods would not be a part of that since they are not part of the vanilla game, and also possibly it is only the consoles where that data would be collected. I voted yes, it always gives them valuable info about how we play that they can use to improve the game.

That's a weird question. Why do you want to know about that in the first place? The obvious answer is "no"; Bethesda doesn't have to know how I play their games. Full stop.

And how would this be a "responsible thing for Bethesda to do"?

No. I don't know why any sane person would consider such a thing.

Don't they already? Developers can read a lot from achievement statistics.

As a rule, I'm against disclosing any information that's not strictly required. It would also be useless for me because I play offline. I know it's very valuable data for the devs, but if ToJKa is right about DA2... :hehe:

No and why on earth should they.
This game is a sandbox designed for us to do whatever we wish. I do not want to be monitored.

No reason for them to. If they want to know such things, all they have to do is send us out an email survey. I'm sure most of us would be willing to answer some questions about our play style if it helps them develop the next game.

No. That was the result of listening to mouth-breathing idiots, firing the original dev team, and handing it all over to a CoD twtichtard to "streamline" the game in order to "reach new audiences."

"CoD is like a roleplaying game" and "Button, AWESOME! We've combined the two!"

Well obviously not the only reason, but tthey played a a part of it's design decisions. I remember the devs commenting on BSN on that.

And statistics can be interpreted how one wants

They can't check mine because I play offline. And this is exactly why I play offline, too. Because I do not want anybody checking my achievements or monitoring my hours played. *shudders*

Monitoring how we play would give them a better perspective of which parts of the game are effectively being ignored/avoided.

They could also see trends in how people play and perhaps make subtle attempts at making other approaches more appealing.

Isn't the game supposed to cater to an incredibly diverse spectrum? What if the truth of the matter was that people were sticking to one form of gameplay as a majority, shouldn't they try to tip the scales a bit?

I'm sure if I was developing the game, or even mods for it, I would be especially interested in that information.

Would also just be kind of nifty to have a database of the stuff imho.

I know some people the same way they hate feeling watched even on the interwebs ad they play their games.

I would rather Beth focus on something like bug fixing instead of wasting time, energy, and money on something like this.

What for? To create games that would please a vast majority and leave the others aside? I don't want any of the Bethesda's games to look like any other game.

And what would you do with such a database? Make money?

Did you even read my post..

I stated the exact opposite, ignore the vast majority and expand on the seemingly ignored parts of the game.

And yes, I would hope they made money off of the system. But ultimately the goal would be to improve the quality of their game.

If Bethesda wouldn't look at the information, thats fine, I'm sure the mod community on the other hand would.

I did but doing this would lead to someone in Beth deciding one day that the next games should be made accordingly to what the vast majority wants. So, the answer is still "no" and the modders don't need anything like this either. Modders don't do mods to please the vast majority either; they, they should at least, do their mods accordingly to what they want to see added to the game. Their mods are their own creations, well, they should be.

That won't happen with what you suggest. Let's bring up the DA2 example - instead of improving the experience of playing other races, Bioware cut them.

Oh wow - that's a big huge NO. And if I could add an expletive to it without getting banned, I most certainly would!

They are more than welcome to ask me questions but monitor? Uh .. just no. Creeps me out just thinking about it. It's one of the reasons the beast that is Steam is NOT on my PC and Skyrim is played on the xbox. I'm sure at some point I'm going to have to give into this or give up gaming. But that time hasn't come just yet.

They want to know how I play? They can do a survey otherwise no, they shouldn't monitor how we play.
