Should Bethesda update the dialogue?

Post » Sat Feb 27, 2016 2:49 am

I love Fallout 4. It's fantastic. I could pick holes in it all day but the fact is it's a massively fun and compelling game to play. I really cannot thank Bethesda enough. However there's one thing that I really, really dislike; the paraphrasing in the dialogue.

One of the most popular mods on the Nexus currently rectifies this: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1235/?.

I love that mod, although I have decided to stop using it so I can do a pure Vanilla run through of the base game and the DLC's. That said I really think the popularity of this mod should make Bethesda consider patching the game to include full lines, even if the layout isn't changed. Sure we've got the option on PC, but I'm also sure there are plenty of console users who would appreciate this change.

[NOTE] Apologies for the typo in the old thread title. If a mod could lock/delete it I'd appreciate it.

[EDIT] Thanks Freddo.

It should have been in the game to begin with, i think the only reason it is not is to mask the choices that don't matter. There are some instances in the game where you have 3 choices that is the same thing, so why didn't they just cut it down to two choices? Probably because of problems with the dialogue wheel, but i've seen Bioware done it without any problems, so. Anyway they should have an option in the menu to turn on full dialogue lines.

Yes they should. I will wait for a patch till we get the dialogue wheel removed and the text lines back.

Actually I asked Gstaff this in a Private Message (PM) yesterday and he said he has this information relayed to the team for feedback.

Who knows it might never amount to anything. I hope it does.

"Team" was probably PR for "thrascan" :teehee:

I'd like it, but don't for a second believe it'll happen.

Eh, I don't think so. Even the glorious "Black-Isle-touched" Fallouts had many, many encounters where the majority of dialogue options would result in the exact same response.

My guess is that this really is going all the way with saying "Hey, we have this BioWare thing that people love now, too!", including paraphrasing the responses to not make the read line redundant.

That is really not what i meant though. If you have 4 choices and 3 of them are the same, why don't you just have two like any other old RPG would? That was my point.

Bethesda is not likely to address it in a patch, as that would be quite a bit of work for no additional sales. They may add in such an option in one of the DLCs, though. Incorporating the mod officially is unlikely due to legal issues.

Bethesda really needs to figure out a way to allow console users to use mods. This is exactly the type of thing the CK is made for!

lol, and many many more responses that led to totally different responses. The early Fallout's simply had a lot of dialog and a lot of choices to pick from. Fallout 4 doesn't, and it can be seen. This isn't something for me to complain about, but for something Bethesda can improve.

Never let hope disappear.

Gstaff told me in a Private Message (PM) yesterday when I talked to him that he relayed the information to the team for feedback.

I'd be very happy if today or tomorrow he ends up responding to this topic, saying hey guys we are listening to your feedback and thoughts or something like that.

Actually the only non texture mod installed, because i personally would prefer to see first, what my character will tell the others. The description and the lines are not always the same by the vanilla dialog system. With the mod i see what i can say.

I aswell asked myself, why Bethesda haven't changed it, when it seems to be so duable, how the modder has shown (ok, i personally wouldn't be able to do it).

But again, it would change the conditions and i think, Bethesda could think its fun when the dialog isn't fully shown for the surprise of the answer. I personally prefer to see what i say, before i say it. ;)

Oh...I never lose hope! Technically, I already have the solution playing on PC. The Dialogue Mod was released days after release.

My response was just from a production standpoint -- speaking dollar spent to dollar earned, "patching" the issue would not likely drum up any additional game sales, but including a dialogue overhaul as part of a DLC...different story. Good to know the team is looking seriously at it, one way or another!

Technically, it's a fairly easy if time-consuming fix. All of the dialogue is already written (for subtitles), so you just need to cut and paste a few tens of thousands of times.

I get your POV. Maybe I'm just bitter, but in the day and age of flashy scripts and expensive voice acting, I have grown rather used to important plot points being mostly 50/50 decisions. If I want hours of profound conversation, I go for certain other games by before mentioned developers, or remnants thereof.

What I really want them to adopt from the old games when it comes to choices, is your actual character build. What I don't appreciate or excuse about FO4 in particular, is that they completely removed any relevance of my build outside combat situations. Simple charming people is still there, but talking professionally about ballistics or science, or avoiding a lengthy quest by being able to fix something; now that's something I really miss.

will i do agree dialogue should be better.

I said no, bc it will svck ALOT from the DLC.

I prefer they focus on better dialogues for DLC.

Updating the dialogue in general will be a huge update. i mean they need to do every dialogue in the game.

Yes, I hope this happens. If Full Dialogue Interface mod ever comes to the Workshop, I would get it in a heartbeat.

I'm in the minority, but I prefer the Mass Effect style dialogue wheel. That said, it wouldn't bother me much if they changed it.

With dialog being completely voiced now, I don't expect it either. What they need to do is strive for quality and add a little more choice to our dialog options. Then I would be happy. I agree with your second part. I miss that as well.

I think OP doesn't understand the dialogue issue that some gripe about. It's not the wheel really, it's the lack of in depth conversation and options.

For me the dialogue wheel and the Yes, Yes, No, Yes options or whatever turn me away from Fallout 4.

What do you mean, "Full Dialogue Interface"? There are already mods that replace the text with the actual, spoken lines. There are also mods that alter the UID so it more closely resembles past Bethesda titles.

I fully understand that this is a major part of the problem, but that's not fixable at this point. However the lack of knowing what you're about to say is still an issue for many and could be officially fixed showing Bethesda do still listen to their fanbase.

Your only chance of this happening is if it is a mechanical change only, displaying more text.

No chance in the world that they will re-record any of the voiced lines.

Best bet is to hope that it will just be different in the next game it seems like a lot of work to change so much in the base game. They probably won't bother.

If they'd ever show the full dialogue, I'd want to be able to mute the PC from talking. Would be extremely annoying to read what I wanted to say, then hear him say it. Redundant and time consuming for no reason.

I have no love for the current system at all. Too many times I found myself being shocked when my character would say something totally contrary to what I thought they were going to say.

I don't have that mod as I'm playing vanilla until the DLC's are finished and the kit is released, but it will be a mod I add, perhaps the first.
