Should I buy F1 and F2?

Post » Mon Mar 14, 2011 7:17 pm

I found a Fallout Collection featuring Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics (the latter doesn't really matter) to the low price of what converts into $15 (not that the price matters). Bear in mind that a brand new game costs well over $80 in Denmark, where I live. The Collection features the following along with the three games:
Spoiler
Bonus Material

* Bonus level
* Pen & paper game
* Advertising art
* Animation art
* Screenshots
* Illustrations & renders concept art
* Storyboards
* Trailer
* Logos

As an avid Fallout 3 player I went to No Mutants Allowed and downloaded the Fallout Bible. I have to say the Fallout universe is much bigger and much more detailed than I ever would have imagined.

Now to my question to you: Should I buy Fallout 1 and 2 to get the full experience? They look very fun to play and it would be great to be even more immersed in the Fallout universe. Now don't worry about gameplay and graphics and all that. I couldn't really care less about those things, as long as the game has an interesting story and plot. EDIT: I know they're turn-based, but that's fine with me. I have fun playing both real-time and turn-based RPG's as well as other genres.

About the system compatibility... I run with Windows Vista Home Premium. Will my PC be able to run those decade old games? Does it require additional patches or similar? If yes, please provide me a link to where such a patch (or similar) is found.

To sum up:
Should I buy Fallout 1 and 2?
Can my PC run it? OS: Windows Vista Home Premium

Thank you very much in advance!
- TBD

Yes it will run and yes it does require some patching up.

Game installation:

FO1&2:

Tactics (check this forum section):

Patches/editors/mods (all 3 games):

*Edit*

Don't install the games in C:\Program Files\ unless you want to experience Vista's irritating lovely way of splitting up folders and hiding files in another directory.

Make a folder and just install them in C:\Classic Fallout\ or whatever.

Works only for FO1, I believe. But why should you use an emulator? Fallout runs straight from your computer with a couple of patches and usually a few compatibility settings rearrangements.

Thanks, Joe Piler! That got the compatibility and patches pretty much cleared up. So now on to the big question: Would it be worth it for me?

Well if you mean the price: 15 bucks, I assume that's approximately 12 Euros, is really cheap for the best games in gaming history. Check if the Collection isn't the edited polished version though.

* edit *

Here is also a list of recommended patches:

Well, the box looks like this: http://www.coolshop.dk/catalog/product_thumb.php?img=images/boxshots/57290-forside.jpg&w=200

I don't know if you have any knowledge on this subject, but if you do, I would really appreciate it.

Well I'll have to look that up cos I bought my Fallouts decades ago. But I guess other members have some more in-depth info about the edition matter.

Since you asked, how big is the difference between the versions?

The polished versions contains censorship: no children for example. It was the same back in the mid 90ties when Fallout US (full game) and UK (censored) versions were released. The censorship is an easy nut to crack with a few patches. Anyways, there are two or more DVD trilogy boxes out for sell: one contains the original US versions of Fallout and one with censored material but that's not a major issue and solvable, I guess. Although I don't know for sure if this DVD just contains the UK version (fixable) or that there is more. But I heard a lot of people having issues with coloring glitches in the edited version. I couldn't find anything thus far but I know someone posted something about this matter on these forums a while back plus included pictures on what the difference was between the trilogy packs.

All I found of reference is:

Well, if the censorship is easy to get rid of, then no problem there. Though not much of an issue to begin with, I guess, unless quest or story-specific things were removed.

Thanks for your help, mate!

The removal of the children from Fallout has no effect on the gameplay, only atmosphere. The children removed from Fallout 2 breaks several quests and makes one of the towns particularly annoying as all these invisble children pickpocket your stuff without you realising. Uncensoring Fallout 2 is a must.

Both games play fine for me under Vista 64 Bit.

if you dont consider the graphics/interface advances of the last decade, you'll enjoy FO1 and FO2 much more than FO3 and NV. but if you really like these features, itll just be torture.

i think the stories of the original fallout games are better

Well, considering that I can play Crysis (or a graphicly similar game) one minute, Fallout 3 the next and still think it looks pretty, I don't think there's gonna be a problem. :P

I got the first game installed by running it in Win 98 compatibility mode and lowered graphics. I'm currently downloading and installing all the patches, though I would ask you something. I'm not sure what version of the game I have. Neither UK/US nor 1.2 or whatever. Does it hurt to install the patches just to be sure?
