Should I buy Fallout?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 12:47 am

I am getting tired of playing Oblivion and Morrowind, and I need a game to keep me interested until Skyrim on Triple Elevensies. Should I buy Fallout? Do they still sell it in very many places? What is the game like?

I had never even heard of Fallout before Bethesda took up the reins so I cannot really speak to how well they did the previous titles justice. I can however say from a huge Elder Scrolls and sandbox RPG fan's perspective that Fallout 3, and New Vegas for that matter. Are both incredible games. I got Fallout 3 when it first released just based on the fact that Bethesda developed it and I continue to play it to this day. It fixed the level scaling problem of Oblivion and brought back that sense of exploration from Morrowind. Plus, if you want a idea of how Skyrim's level scaling works Fallout 3 would be a good game to play.

If you like huge sandbox games, post apocalyptic settings, previous Bethesda Game Studios titles, and hundreds of hours of fun. I would recommend Fallout 3.

In my opinion the only thing I miss in Fallout 3 that Obsidian rectified in New Vegas is Iron Sights mode. Which is when aim you actually look down your sights. But that's just a nit picky thing on my part.
Both games are amazing but If I had to choose one I would go with Fallout 3.

Just realized you may be talking about previous Fallout titles... If so you can buy them on steam or grab the http://www.amazon.com/Fallout-Trilogy-3-Pack-Compilation-Pc/dp/B001V9PTVE/ref=pd_sim_vg_2 Which includes Fallout 1, 2 and tactics.

I hear ya. I played through New Vegas and really liked it. I diddnt finish Fallout 3, but mabey because I was playing that on a computer with a mouse and keyoard at a desk. I'm thinking about getting the GOTY, if I can get it for real cheap I'm gonna grab it to test if it was playing on the PC that made me not enjoy it as much as New Vegas. Fallout 3 is still a good game.

If hes getting bored with Morrowind and Oblivion Fallout 3 GOTY has the standard game + all the mods!!!!

In many ways yes. In combat and exploration it falls short.

If you're into the whole "post apocalyptic" thing; then yes. Definitely. It's an amazing game, IMO just as good as Oblivion or Morrowind. (Im talking about FO3 though. Don't know about others.)

In many ways yes. In combat and exploration it falls short.

There were some parts that really aggravated me with New Vegas. It was sometimes the fact in was blocked to an area, maybe going up a hill, or along a ridge in a mountain.

Spoiler
Or trying to actually use some tactics to get the jump on the deathclaws of quarry junction from shooting down on them

many bits of exploration are almost really sidetracking. If there are more landmarks in the vanilla world (a DLC or two to add more areas around the area...)

some of the combat can be annoying...but to say that Fallout 3 has a better story is an ignorant, close minded statement. New Vegas' questline runs miles around the linear main quest on Fallout 3. the hours of extra quests to do simply make Fallout 3 look unprofessional. there are still quite a few glitches and bugs to overcome, but I do hope Obsidian releases patches for this fantastic game.

I only played the regular Fallout 3. My friends didn't care too much for the expansions. Still though it's a great game. I like New Vegas better because I playing on my computer and the true iron sights is way better. Still if you're looking for something to transition to Skyrim, this'll be it.

Umm. I never said it had a better story, and I resent you insinuating that I did, when I clearly did not say that. You really should re-read my post again if you think I ever stated it's story was better than New Vegas'.

I'll say it. Fallout 3 had a way better story than New Vegas. But that's my opinion. I don't care for the illusion of choice when the only difference is faction X is giving me the same quest that faction Y would have.

New Vegas was good, but it in no way made Fallout 3 look "unprofessional"

I really like F:3 and NV. However, NV is the game where invisible walls irked me the most. If you're getting it for the PC I'd suggest finding a mod which removes them (if there is one). Even with that annoyance though, it was still a great game overall.

Same as me. I have Fallout 1 installed but haven't played yet. I am using windows 7, and had to tweak it to get it to run correctly, otherwise I get weird colours. I forgot what I did so haven't played it yet.

Now are you talking about Fallout 3 or Fallout 1? If talking about Fallout 3, post in the F3 forum, you will get better replies. If you liked Oblivion, you should like Fallout 3, if that is what you are talking about.
For me, it's like Oblivion with Guns. I find the stories great, the action awsome, and the quests better than in Oblivion. It takes a bit to get use to, because where it differes is from the traits system and
character creation is different from Oblivion.

I say Yes to Fallout 3, to New Vegas, but haven't played any of the other Fallout games Yet. :P

Buy Fallout 3. I honestly don't see why people hate this game. Its amazing, epic and the ending brought a tear to my eye. New Vegas doesn't feel like Fallout. It felt more like a FPS version of GTA.

Forgot to mention, if you are going to buy Fallout 3, make sure you buy the Game of the Year edtion. This way you get all 5 DLC included and don't have to worry about buying it seperately.

He has a point though, no Fallout, including New Vegas, has felt quite as Fallout-y as Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel, a.k.a THE Fallout game, just like Shadowkey is THE Elder Scrolls game and Invisible War is THE Deus Ex game.

:shifty:
