Another one of these threads.

Just kidding. Yea, you should buy it and try it, but as I've said in the last 18 "should I get Oblivion" threads, don't expect TES: IV to be the prequel to TES: V. They have some things in common, but are completely seperate games and game worlds.

does oblivion still have a big modding community?

Yes it does. I am on console, but most of the folks here are on PC, and have modded games (lightly or heavily). So you're in the right place.

Is exploring in oblivion better than skyrim?

I'm not going to say which game is "better" when it comes to exploring. They both have their plusses and minuses. You'll hear all about these if you stick around here. I don't feel like answering this one in detail...my answer would be mostly opinion, anyways.

Also how are the quest in oblivion?!

The quests in Oblivion are generally longer than in Skyrim (sometimes much longer). I enjoy them, but sometimes they go on forever, and with my poor memory skills I forget what I'm supposed to be doing.

People rag on Skyrim's quests a lot, and Skyrim's quests do sometimes have some questionable areas, but then so do some of Oblivion's questlines, here and there.

Most of all, don't listen to any of us. Get the game going, give it a try, and come to your own conclusions.

Personally I like exploring dungeons in Oblivion.

Some say that the dungeons are "cookie cutter" and even randomly generated. They are certainly not randomly generated (except for dungeons in the Oblivion worlds which are randomly generated), and have a lot of unique layout features. And Skyrim dungeons also use some "cookie cutter" elements.

However, it is true that Skyrim dungeons in general have more unique back stories. And while Oblivion does have some unique features in some dungeons, the unique features are not as extensive as Skyrim dungeons.

Just so you know I'm not an Oblivion basher, I like Oblivion at least as much as Skyrim. After months in Skyrim, I'm playing Oblivion now. But while I like Oblivion dungeons, Skyrim dungeons have a edge over Oblivion for exploration.

Yes, buy Oblivion. It has a big modding community. Exploring is a lot better in Oblivion than Skyrim, less repetitive and new stuff every corner. The quests in Oblivion are amazing and a million times better than Skyrims, the Skyrim quests are absolutely rubbish, nothing compared to Oblivions.

Oblivion is still well worth it. The moding community, while maybe not as active as it was while it was still new, is still working.

Dungeons are not quite as unique as Skyrim's, but are still fun to roam around in.

IMO Oblivions writing and quests are far superior to anything Skyrim has, so on that basis alone, Oblivion is well worth buying...or rebuying in some cases (like mine).

If anything, exploring is more satisfying in Oblivion. I always found it more immersive than Skyrim for some reason. That could just be me though.

No Oblivion was better for exploring, mainly because the environment wasn't as boring looking in my opinion. And I thought the dungeons in Oblivion were better than Skyrim's.

...does oblivion still have a big modding community? ...

Yes, it's huge and some of the mods are fantastic, like OOO and MMM.

... Is exploring in oblivion better than skyrim? ...

I answered this in your other thread. Not really good form to ask the same question in two threads.

To summarize, I like exploring in Oblivion a lot. And I like the dungeons in Oblivion a lot, some have very interesting designs and unique features. But Skyrim has some more interesting back stories to their dungeons.

... Also how are the quest in oblivion?! ...

The guild questlines are, generally speaking, longer and more involved than Skyrim. I prefer the Oblivion Guild questlines to Skyrim. In general I prefer the oblivion quest lines and side quests. However there are some very nice Skyrim quests too.

Absolutely. If you're anything like me, you'll fall in love with the landscape, the people, the towns, the stunning views, the factions and the add-on content. Don't treat Oblivion as 'that game that came before Skyrim', think of it as its own game within the Elder Scrolls universe. Appreciate it for its strengths, and you'll fall in love with it just like us :)

The modding community is still active - there's a steady stream of new mods, and they supplement the plethora of existing mods. The huge supply of user-created content ensures that PC users can tailor the game to their personal tastes - but I strongly suggest trying the vanilla game first.

Exploration is ... Exploration. Everyone has their own opinion on the matter. I love exploring Cyrodiil, and can appreciate its dungeons for their unique layouts. I do believe Skyrim does a number of things better, but that doesn't mean I don't love exploring Cyrodiil.

Quests in Oblivion tend to vary more than in Skyrim - there are less dungeon dives and more unique quests - solving thefts, helping sons defend their farm, spying for an insane Bosmer ... But at the same time, I feel there are too few quests. There are less than ten individual quests (that is, not tied to a guild or questline) available in the Imperial City, which is the heartland of the Empire. Again, it's a matter of taste.

Really, just try the game for yourself, and make your own mind up. You'll have a blast! :)

Exploration is a personal matter. If you're interested in a game's landscape you'll want to explore it. And deciding which landscapes interest you is purely subjective. This is not a question we can answer for you. I prefer exploring Skyrim. Skyrim's environment engages my imagination. I love being in it, wandering around in it. But other people, as you can see in this thread, prefer Cyrodiil. I too enjoy Cyrodiil. There is no "better" here.

About quests. The conventional thing to say is that Oblivion has better quests. I've begun to put this to the test recently. I did the College of Winterhold and Mages Guild quest lines back-to-back so that I could compare the two. I found that I preferred the College of Winterhold quest line. Now I'm about to do side-by-side comparisons of the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood quest lines (I've heard for years how great Oblivion's DB quest line is so I'm hoping I like Oblivion's DB better than I liked Oblivion's Mages Guild).

But, again, it's subjective. Some people, like myself, are going to be more engaged by Skyrim's quests. Others are going to be more engaged by Oblivion's quests. They are both good games. And the thing is, Oblivion doesn't cost much anymore. I paid well over $100 for the game, the DLCs and the expansion. It will cost you a fraction of that. I'm glad I paid that money. I've gotten literally thousands of hours of enjoyment out of playing and modding Oblivion. Buy it. You can hardly go wrong.
