Should camping be possible in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 09, 2011 8:40 am

Hey everyone,
This may just be me personally, but I always thought it was somewhat strange how in both Morrowind and Oblivion, one could just wait in place for X amount of hours in the wilderness. I also thought it was a pain having to travel all the way to a house or find some random bed to just level up while I'm out exploring. Anyone else think a deploy-able camp (portable house essentially) would be a nice feature to have in Skyrim? Not only would it add to the immersion of settling down if you are not near a settlement, but it would allow one to rest and level, as well as offer some protection from the wilderness. Best of all you could use this camp in practically any location, as long as it is a reasonable location. Any thoughts?

Support. When I read the title I was thinking about camping like in First Person Shooters, but this is definately a good idea.

Camping would be awesome, but it won't bother me if it isn't in the game.

Like RDR. Sure, whatever.

Honestly I dont really care. I NEVER used that feature in RDR except to fast travel/save. It doesnt really do anything for me immersion wise, because immersion isnt real. But on the other hand, I dont mind if it is in the game. I just wouldnt use it.

Oh god yes. This was always an essential mod for me, I never went out into the wilderness without a bedroll.

Would I like this? Yes

Is this feasible? Likely not.

Certainly. I always use camping mods; it's a feature that adds so much to the sense of immersion in the world and makes exploring the wilds a vastly better experience.

I really hope they put something like that in and there's no reason not to... but I suspect they won't.

To Sinister Raven: What do you mean, not feasible? If you mean in the sense of "not possible", then that's ridiculous. It's been done by modders, it's nothing difficult or unwieldy.
It's just a matter of Bethesda thinking to include it and bothering to do so.

Yeah.. one of the first mods I remember downloading was the bedroll mod.. Later you could get a whole camp set. But really all I wanted was that bed roll. It at least adds to a sense of realism about the world... I would also like cooking and fishing.. They've already stated that there will be hunting haven't they?

Why wouldn't it be feasible? TES is one large open world. Would additional textures really be that much of an issue? It's not like I'm asking for a ten story castle to spawn in the middle of nowhere all the sudden.

Star Wars Galaxies had deploy-able camps that could be spawned anywhere on most planets and there didn't seem to be any issues with that game that came out in 2003.

I don't think we should underestimate the Creation Engine as we do not know its limitations. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I think this would easily be a nice addition and popular feature to TES.

In the previous games it hasn't been an issue at all.

It doesn't matter much to me if it's in the final game or not, as I'm sure this will be a week one mod, but I know plenty of people who play on consoles that would be disappointed if this feature was not included.

I guess it's possible. I just can't see such textures randomly popping up on steep hills and other areas. I'm unfamiliar with the exact workings of the engine. Considering TES games have had nothing even remotely similar I assumed it improbable to be able to magically place a structure anywhere you want in game  If it's possible than sure, I'd be interested in it.

Edit: How do the mods work anyway? Does it just throw down a bed where you're looking? What happens if you do it underwater or in an area with overlapping geometry (such as against a building)?

In the mods I've seen there were clipping issues on steep hills and such, but they were easily avoided.
It wouldn't be too hard to set restrictions on where it can be placed as well, I think. It'd be a simple matter to code a check for inclination and obstructions, unless there's something I don't know (which is quite possible, I'm not very knowledgeable about this sort of thing).

But it's definitely doable.

EDIT: Yeah, it just places the item where you're looking, dropping it until it hits a collision box. There were scripts to prevent it from being deployed in water, but there were clipping problems in some places, as I mentioned.
Not just bedrolls as well; the one I use in Morrowind has a tent, tables, fires, guar-hide screens, pots and trifolds, etc.

Wouldn't a bedroll item be easier, just drop it, click it, gives you two options pick up or rest, doesn't even half to unroll.

Yea, that's what I meant about 'not feasible'. I was talking more about it working without bugs. In a full release game they try to give everything a certain level of polish and something that easily clips into obstructions isn't very polished. I don't see them putting this in the full game, I guess there will likely be a mod for it but I run 360 anyway.

It's so much more fun when you can unroll it and place it on the ground, then put down a campfire and wait in the wilderness. I remember reading that you can read books in first-person 3D now, so (to me at least) it would be f***ing epic to sit down by my camp and read while I wait for my food to cook. Just win, right there.

I'm positive it's within Bethesda's capabilities to code around such bugs.
But yeah, I still don't see it making it in the game. If nothing else, I just don't think it would even occur to them.

Essentially they'd have to code it to read gradients and geometry and the like until there would be only very specific areas to drop it. I don't think they want to include something if it's gonna be that limited. Who knows though, they might figure it out.

Obviously we have to have it. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y98/alphaomega16/LegitimateStrategy.jpg is essential, as everyone knows.

I prefer going TO my enemies, personally. :P

Oh, you mean bedrolls? Yeah, that'd be nice, too.

The reason for this thread being created now is because the feature is more than likely not already in the game. If there is enough support for it, perhaps BGS will see a benefit to having it. Worst case scenario, a modder could implement it, but console players wouldn't have access to that.

Myself included. I can't see this being too hard for them to put in. Hell, I'd be O.K if it was just a drop-able item like a skull, or a sword, and looked like a rolled up bed-roll, that you could click on, and "Set camp" for the night.
