Should I destroy the Brotherhood?

Post » Thu May 10, 2012 2:58 am

So, during a normal play through of fallout new vegas I generally pick the Independent Vegas option for various moral reservations regarding the three major powers.

My question to you all is, when "picking my neighbors" can I let the Brotherhood of Steel live? They'd certainly make a strong ally against the NCR should they ever decide to invade again. And I'm normally Idolized by them because I bring them ED-E, fix their filtration system, plant the receiver in Black Mountain, avert nuclear war, etc, etc. But do you think they'd let an independent, courier influenced Vegas police itself with robots and control Hoover Dam? House certainly seems to think not, and Yes Man thinks not because House thought not. However, House is pretty biased against the Brotherhood and we don't hear much on the issue in game. We know the Brotherhood wants the Dam and Helios from dialogue, but not much else.

What do you all think?

Blow them up and claim you did it to protect them from the technology. Yknow, by blowing the technology up.

The Brotherhood is a technofetishist culture of militants to stuck in their ways of seclusion and forced confiscation to adapt and change. Unlike Lyon's chapter in D.C., the Mojave Chapter, much like other Eastern chapters, is to stuck on their self righteous technology hoarding. The Brotherhood doesn't protect humanity from Pre-War tech. They actively use Pre-War laser and plasma technology, and Power Armor for their own ends. They're bloody hypocrites, and there is no future in their existence. Just do humanity a favour and wipe them out.

You forgot to mention the MWBOS (my favorite). They're much more open minded than the WBOS. They allow tribals to join them to increase their numbers, and their also active and aggressive.

As for the OT, I say blow them up. They'll never get over the fact that you have robots guarding New Vegas. As the good Col. said, they're to stuck in their ways.

The Brotherhood have a hard on for tech sooner or later the Brotherhood is going to want all the tech you have and are going to wage war to get it. It's better to just destroy them now so they don't cause a problem in the future.

If your a member of the BOS, they will gladly let you be in control.
They are also a good deterrent against the NCR.

Just had a debate with freqnasty over in the spoiler forum about this not so long ago, the tl;dr of it is that yes, I think you should wipe them out, if you're going independent. An independent Vegas will be sandwiched between two volatile larger powers, your Securitrons are the only way to ensure that they think twice about invading the Mojave again. A power-armored paramilitary cult intent on hoarding advanced weaponry is a huge threat to the Mojave's independence, should they recover from their current slump.

from my pov u should be able to have the option to recruit or destroy ( or cripple ) groups , like it is now if u are independant this faction surely is hunted by most groups , legion wants them dead , ncr too , so in this perspective yes , they would probably join u out of self preservation reason

but well the game doesn't give u this option

also if u are independent u are not required to destroy them , but those power armor sure net alot of caps :)

personally if i have the option i would have them on my side then dead

Yes because as House says "They're ridiculous."

They think they're saving the wasteland from the corruption of technology while that technology is making them more corrupt than when it was out in the wasteland. They should just die off already.

Except the splinter factions, Lyons BoS should establish some sort of country so I feel like I had some sort of large impact in F3 and the MWBoS should make an appearance to continue the F:T storyline.

Also forgot to mention.

Spoiler
Did you kill the Van Graffs? If so the BOS is your last chance for buying energy weapons and accessories. You can still loot enemies for them though.

That doesnt matter. Fiends, Old World Blues, and Lonesome Road are very rich resources of Energy Weapons.

I like them D:

No seriously, I do. It may be because of the massive influence they had on me when I was about 11 or 12, when I was playing Fallout 3.

It's also pretty heartbraking seeing Veronica being all emo.

Thanks everybody, I'm trying to do what I might consider to be a "perfect playthrough" and I think I'll destroy the BoS in the Mohave.

However, something I'd like to hear all of your thoughts about, does destroying the Brotherhood in the Mohave risk attracting the attention of the rest of the BoS, and pose a longer term threat? Or should I ignore that since it's something we don't hear about in game?

No, but yes. Depending on your path, that is. If you're going independent, at least the first time I did, I tried getting all the Factions on my side that I could.

For Mr. House, I killed them.

For the Legion, I killed them.

For the NCR, I killed them.

So, as you can see, 1/4 of the time I killed them. That doesn't stop the fact that they are one of my favorite factions, their armor is classic, and I think they are doing the right thing (in a sense..) hoarding all the electronics, trying to keep humanity alive a little longer. Even if it is just one more day.

Its not mentioned at all in the game, but if you're looking for a "what if" senario, it wouldn't happen regardless.

The Western BOS is in full retreat, or rather hiding. They wouldn't risk utter destruction of what strength they have left to avenge one little chapter that gets itself killed. The NCR would be able to defeat them regardless. The BOS's numbers are just too small.

and I think they are doing the right thing (in a sense..) hoarding all the electronics, trying to keep humanity alive a little longer.

Taking tech from everyone else and then using to fight other factions (and lose) is a noble goal? How does that keep humanity alive?

The BOS aren't a morally bad faction necessarily, but they certainly aren't the good guys. They're just like everyone else, looking out for number 1: themselves.

I see you are one to support the Enclave. The good guys in this fight aren't the Enclave or BoS, you're right; the good guys in this fight are the ones that sit back and plan to take over this nuclear hell hole: The children!

Yes, the followers are largely an exception to the general rule. At least at the moment.

I wouldn't be surprised if they steadily became more concerned with the acquisition of material power though. Charging for their services etc.
