Should DLC be outsourced to Obsidian?

Post » Thu Dec 03, 2015 10:56 am

The DLC was the best part of Fallout: NV, and probably the best add-ons I've played for any game. I wasn't really grabbed by NV until I got the DLC. They elevated my appreciation of the whole game. But Chris Avellone was leader writer and director of the DLC and he's left Obsidian, so the success may not be repeatable even if they were given the gig.

I absolutely loved what Bethesda did with Fallout 4, it's the best game in the series IMO and I really didn't think it would be. That being said, I hope Bethesda does most of the DLC but I honestly wouldn't mind them allowing Obsidian to do a little, maybe they could keep the flow of DLC for us even a year+ after Bethesda moves on to their next project? It could be a nice way for us to continue receiving new content for the game while we wait the inevitably long wait for whatever Bethesda's next in-house game ends up being, just as NV was a nice new bit of Fallout between the really long wait for Fallout 4. :P

i would rather Bethesda captain their own DLC. Obsidian can do their own should they ever have the chance.

Each company has their own vision for a base game + dlc. Better that vision have some level of unity.

Wow that is one big wall of text you posted there, OP.

Try using the enter key, to separate your paragraphs and sentences some more.

It is very unappealing, to read a block of text like yours.

But I think Bethesda is doing fine. I just want lots of expansions and patches!

As long as they keep this level of quality, it should be fine.

I'd rather Obsidian get a chance to make their own Fallout again and vastly improve on 4. Like they did with New Vegas to 3.

Tl;Dr

Obsidian couldn't have done as well as people acclaim if they didn't repurpose more than 95% of the assets from F3. To criticise F3 so harshly when it is the foundation on which your argument stands is self defeating. And I largely hated NV. The best thing about it was atleast it played like F3. Look at it from this POV. The vast majority of NPC's in NV you would interact only once with in the game, never to respawn if you harmed them. The vast majority of my playtime in NV was doing silly things after saving my game and then exiting out. That's because there was nowhere fun you could get repeatable enjoyment out of. Not a good game.

Sure. It'd be the only chance we'd get at Fallout 4 even slightly resembling an RPG.

Honestly, I would rather them make a new Fallout title and develop their own DLC for that title.

I actually enjoyed the DLC for Fallout 3 - Point Lookout and The Pitt, that is.

You must be playing different games than we do. And not because you like FO3 more than FO:NV (I have played only New Vegas and I like the look of Fallout 3 better, I think). A coherent experience is not something I have ever gotten from a Bethesda open world sandbox games. Heck, the reason I play Bethesda open world games is because I want to see what modders can do with this and what I can do with this.

If Obsidian can make DLC, that's awesome. I wouldn't say that I want all DLCs to be made by Obsidian though, that's a tad excessive.

DLC can't change the core design of the base game. The Fallout series should definitely be turned over to Obsidian. I wasn't one of "those people" before, but I am now.

the fallout series "should be turned over to obsidian" ? oh so we can have a map thats 99% empty area? and a mostly static enemy spawn system, no large building complexes and dungeons to explore?, no thanks i'll pass on that, i prefer todd howards approach to large detailed game world's with a lot of human enemies to kill actually armed with weapons not macheties and sticks of dynamite.

What approach is that? The 'Pretend like Fallout 1 and 2 Never Happened' approach? Yeah, man. He's a master of that approach.

No. Old World Blues was good but Dead Money and Honest Hearts were pretty forgettable and Lonesome Road was just terrible. I'll trust Bethesda to come up with something interesting.

Butthurt much? Todd Howard is one of a 100 people working on this game, so its not just his input you disagree with.

On to the matter at hand. No Obsidian should not do any DLC for this game. If they are to do more Fallout then i would prefer they get to do another game. Though with Pillars of Eternity taking up time and rumors of a new IP coming from them and Paradox i just don't see it happening anytime soon or maybe not ever.

Let Bethesda do the DLC for their own game. I definitely want Obsidian to have another go at Fallout, but two different studios with two different design philosophies cramming into one game is a bad deal for *all* of us.

Absolutely not. I don't want any more of Obsidian's "contributions".

Ideally I'd like the release cycle to be:

Bethesda Fallout 4

Bethesda Fallout 4 DLC

Obsidian Fallout 4.5

Obsidian Fallout 4.5 DLC

Bethesda The Elder Scrolls 6

Bethesda The Elder Scrolls 6 DLC

(*Unknown* TES-spinoff!)

Bethesda Fallout 5

Bethesda Fallout 5 DLC

Obsidian Fallout 5.5

and so on and so on, you got the idea many lines ago already

And I don't mean x.5 as "Obsidian makes better Fallout", I mean it as continuation of the foundation Bethesda already made.

EDIT: And yes, in this ideal setup Obsidian doesn't have other projects than Fallout x.5s or if they do, they'll do them in a way that doesn't interfere with the FOx.5s.

This would be pretty great. New Vegas was a damn fine Fallout 3.5, and having more Bethesda games floating around can only be a good thing.

Don't really care as long as they include some sort of underwater DLC content. Which is what is implied by a modder finding this scrapped UNDERWATER HARPOON GUN!
