Should dungeons be scary?

Yap. All of them should be interesting and different from each other and some must be really scary.

Another +1 from me :)

Scary works best when used in moderation and the tension is given time to build, it should never fall into a repeated or predictable pattern. DeadSpace violated all of this, as far as I played the game at least. After the 4th 'Oh look a dead body, bet it jumps up an attacks me' and the 3rd 'bet the lights go out and monsters jump out the walls' moment I put the game away. More of a shock game then a scare game, so where I would have voted for occasional/terrifying + a little more often/Pretty Scary/Disturbing, I cannot vote for DeadSpace, sorry.

Yeah, I definitely think there should be some dungeons in the game that aim to be a bit frightening and intense.

A perfect example of how I wish these dungeons to be is in the Oblivion mod The Dungeons of Ivellon.

None of the games you listed as examples are scary to me in the slightest though. Dungeons of Ivellon actually uses the Oblivion engine and a lore-friendly story and it always makes me feel uneasy. Even after clearing the entire dungeon and even after playing through it twice, I still feel uneasy walking through the halls of Ivellon.

I remember posting in a similar thread recently. I think the way the OP (vadagar?) described it was: "Let's massively piss pants!"
That's the way I think about it too. I'd like to see some more Lovecraftian mystery/horror in TES. That's the way people should look at ancient tombs, not like it's supposed to be a cakewalk!

Shouldn't dungeons be scary by nature?

So true, mate. I don't know what could be cheery about dark, moist caves. This isn't a place for hello kitty.

AMNESIA!!!!!!!!!!!

aka- when you hear splashes, RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN RUN and DONT LOOK BAAAAAAAAACCCCCCCCKKKK.. GET OUT OF THE WATEEERRR AGHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MUST GET OUT OF WATER, MUST GET OUT OF WATER!!!!!

Amnesia - only actual game to scare me for a prolonged period

You bet!

Bioshock is not disturbing its nothing more then action and killing things. But I think some should be scary kinda like Fallout 3's dunwhich building(I dont know but it was infested with Ghouls and spirits) but more then one of them

Should vary from dungeon to dungeon but I'd love for a few to be as frightening as they can make them.

Wait, Bioshock was disturbing? And I found Dead Space to be more disturbing than actually Terrifying .

And I'd like a couple of them to be 'Scary' but not all of them.

No. Here's why:
TES is not survival horror
A dungeon inhabited by regular old people should not be terrifyingly scary
You are anointed by the gods themselves to stop the ultimate, fatal threat to the entire planet, not much should faze you

From the concept art video, it looks like there are going to be some pretty creepy/disturbing dungeons.

Silent hill 2 isn't scary. If you want scary play Amnesia. THAT is a scary game.

"Creepy" and "Disturbing" is different from "scary" though. Cheap thrills, like things jumping out at you is stupid and does not fit in the series. I don't want to be startled. However, eerie, creepy, disturbing provocative imagery would be awesome.

Should be different from dungeon to dungeon(I don't want all dungeons to be scary). What I want to see is: Some dungeon may not look scary at first glance(I don't think bandit lair is deadly scary despite of the hostile inhabitant), but when you go deeper, it can become scarier than before.

Asking if dungeons should be scary is like asking if your armor should be 4 inches thick and made of diamonds. It depends on its purpose. I think a few dungeons made entirely to scare you would be nice. Of course, this would be 10000x easier if they have realistic and dynamic lighting. Lighting is the most important part in creating a good environment that does what you want, and a good scary environment is the most important part in creating gameplay that scares you.

Also your poll is kinda bias on scaryness levels:

Extremely Terrifying (Think Silent Hill 2) - Never played it
Terrifying (Like Dead Space) - It really isnt scary at all...
Pretty Scary (F.E.A.R.) - Again, not scary...
Disturbing (Bioshock) - Not scary at all, and I havent even finished it due too extreme bordom
Kinda Scary (Resident Evil) - Never played it.

Your ideas of scary games are ones I find relatively lame.. I have yet to find a game that truely scares me beyond, 'Oh that thing pop'd up suddenly and I was suprised, but not scared at it whatsoever..' :/

What, like how in those haunted forests that volunteer groups do for Halloween where instead of actually hiding they just blind you with green lights?

Some scary dungeons. Not all. I haven't played any of the listed games for reference of scariness. They don't have to be incredibly scary, though, not to the point where it doesn't make sense in the TES universe.

Just because it's not a "survival horror" doesn't mean it shouldn't have frightening moments, they shouldn't hold anything back if it improves the game rather than trying to fit a certain arbitrary genre. The wider the emotional range I get playing an epic sandbox game the better.
Also there were some fairly frightening areas in Morrowind and some elements of horror. I still remember exploring a sixth house base my first playthrough of it and getting blinded and poisoned by some diseased elephant headed freak and frantically healing myself while making for the exit. The whole theme of corprus and the sixth house was fairly dark and had elements of horror to it.

Yeah, pretty much. Except haunted forests generally are made more scary by being pitch black so you can't see a damn thing. This just would not pass in a videogame. :P

Yeah it would, I've played games that put you through pitch black areas. Generally you have a flashlight though. In TES you'd have the light spell or night eye or a torch or lantern or whatever.

It would be great if some of them were scary. The effect would get tiring quick if it was every dungeon :)
The scarier the better :)

woh no...not too scary slow ur roll. idk how much my heart can take. my heart can only take but so much lol. it seriously gets tired after a while cuz i play scary games for like hours and hous in a sitting not good for u lol. i wuld only want moderately scary. haha.

Exactly. In the game you would still have a source of light. Imagine how much cooler a torchlight area full of god knows what would look if everything in the room cast a realistic shadow.

I didn't say it should be devoid of "frightening moments", I just don't want all dungeons to be scary. I am not a fan of games where things just jump out at you. It's a cheap tactic and gets old fast. I don't want to be startled, it just gets annoying after a while.
