Should dungeons be scary?

Post » Sun Aug 15, 2010 3:50 am

I always thought that it would be neat to have scary dungeons, but I wouldn't like all of them to be scary. Maybe 30%, and not too ridiculously scary, just enough to make me want the lights on. What do you think?

It would be great if some of them were scary. The effect would get tiring quick if it was every dungeon :)
The scarier the better :)

Yap. All of them should be interesting and different from each other and some must be really scary.

No. They should all be bright and cheery.

It's a little hard for me to answer the poll since I've never played the games listed there. I would like dungeons, though, that keep me on the edge of my seat and jumping at shadows for fear that something might jump out at me.

Scarier is good.
The Oblivion gates were good for about 5 minutes, until you realize there is no real threat.
Higher level dungeons, that are supposed to be very difficult, should be scary enough to make people avoid them.
It would make the awesome loot that much more awesome...

Although I'm for some fear in dungeons, I don't want Skyrim to be released as a survival horror. Nor do I think every dungeon should be equally scary- dungeons should vary, obviously based on what's in them, but it shouldn't be too heavily reliant on that either. For me, necromancer caves should be more scary than creature caverns- this was not so for me in Oblivion unfortunately.

I think it is silly using games as examples of scary-levels since some may not agree with your subjective opinions on the games. I for example F.E.A.R just as scary as dead space. That said I'd some dungeons to be extremely scary, some to be beautiful, some to be alien and fascinating and some to be cozy

Too many scary dungeons will backfire and people will consciously avoid the dungeons.

Some quests may take place in dungeons so they may have to venture there weather they like it or not.

Scary/dangerous. Some dungeons(if not all) should be Dead Space or Amnesia scary. To be Amnesia scary I guess the monsters would have to be really strong and possibly 1-4 hit you.

Even if they're not scary I'd like them to be dangerous. I like a tactics game rather than a hack and slash.

I don't think they should all be scary. Definitely some of them though.

Shouldn't dungeons be scary by nature?

I was thinking the same thing too, but now I realize they stop being scary when they're all alike. They need to have a lot of variety.

well it really depends. if im in some bandit cave i dont want to feel like i did when i was playing amnesia ( scariest freaking game ever ). but if it is some undead tomb or necro dun than yea some music and sounds, a darker setting, decomposing corpses, than yea it fits right in.

Doesn't matter to me whether they are scary or not. As long as they are unique.
I've been through 20+ dungeons on Oblivion, and the only difference between each one was that it was either a cave or a ruin.
All caves had the same look with some or more water than others, and all ruins had the same look with the same traps (except for the Fort where Lucien hid)

I would like to see some terrifying dungeons, but for them to be very rare, like 1 or 2 total. It would diminish the effect if there was some cosmic supernatural evil in almost every dungeon. Perhaps not Amnesia scary, but a greater sense of darkness couldn't hurt.
