Should Fallout get rid of 'Quest Items'?

Post » Tue May 17, 2011 6:43 am

So one thing I've been thinking about is should Fallout go back to the system of 'You lost it? Well I guess you can't complete this quest then, buddy.'

I mean, yes it can be annoying when you lose a quest item, but honestly, it's your fault if you lose it. No one MAKES you sell it. I mean, half the quest items you find in the F3-F:NV generation have unique names or pipboy icons, so it makes sense you should hang on to it, or put it somewhere safe. If you sell it or lose it and render a quest uncompletable, then it should fall on your head.

What are your opinions?

It was pretty much 'You lose it, well, you're loss pal, better reload a save or start a new game.' It put responsability on the player. I feel the F3-NV system coddles the player.

But isnt that how it is in F3 and FNV to. You can just reload a safe back to where ever.

You can, but any quest item in F3 and F:NV is 'glued' into your inventory, IE tagged unremovable until you beat that quest and it is removed via script. I think Fallout in the future should get rid of this sort of coddling, I think it'd encourage careful behavior, which is perfect for a series abotu survival in the Wastes.

Ohh im sorry i read this whole thread wrong lol. So if you would sell a quest item in F1 or F2 then you cant do the quest. Ok ok i get what your saying. I guess i wouldnt mind that.

So if im getting this right in the older ones you could just magically loose the quest that is listed for no purpose?

No, but if you sold it or dropped it on one of the random generated maps, then it's gone forever.

Doesn't really bother me either way all I don't want to happen again is I pick up a large amount of the quest item, finish the quest by giving a small amount of the item away only to find out I can't get rid of the surplus items such as happened in Come fly with me.

I hate sloppy menus full of stuff I don't use.

So, yeah. Tag 'em as quest items but if we lose them, tough. How do you lose a damned item, anyway?

I agree, it should be player responsibility to keep hold of quest items and not have them cluttering my misc section.

Maybe it gets tagged on the map where you lose it. Like when you are supposed to find it in the first place, you follow the arrow to the place where you can find it, you pick it up and the arrow changes to the guy you are to return it to. If you then drop it or sell it, the arrow will then change to point to where you dropped it or to the vendor that you sold it to.

I hate it when you've got your inventory full of quest items after quests, and they haven't been removed and you can't remove them yourself (except with console commands)

I am going to say yes it should go back to the way it was even though it can be annoying as hell at times. Its not always the players fault for losing a quest item. Those damn kids in Fallout 2 can be very annoying. Many a time I had car parts stolen from me only to be lost in the maze of kids. I know you can buy them back but sometimes the item just goes missing. Still it adds to the game, in real life people are going to steal from you.

Wait what? I've never had anything stolen from me in Fallout 2 before

Fully agree, some of them even has weight, and while that is realistic it's still pissing me off I can't remove them out of my inventory and has to suffer a dozen pounds of weight cause of it.

Could do a small pop up like "This is a quest item, it's important for completion of a quest, are you sure you want to depart with it? [Yes] <-> [No]".

Really? Lucky. Hang out around the kids in the Den. They steal from you if you give them enough time or just get to close. Sometimes they just take caps or some ammo but they can take quest items like the parts needed for the car.

If that means you're responsible for the quest items then yes. Okay you can drop them on a random map or sell it, whatever. The thing that annoys me especially in FONV is there are too much of these items and these things tend to clutter up my inventory, even when already used for a specific quest. The camera for Micheal Angelo is a nice example of such a junk item. Even though I can delete them with the console commands interface, it's still pretty irritating.

Ah, easy so solve by helping Mom open that child orphanage (restoration project) and then just kill the guy who is making these kids steal for him - free stuff! :celebration:

I have deleted some posts. No matter what was available in previous Fallout games, discussion of child killing is a restricted topic on these forums.

(Ok, well, Quest items, let's see, i agree and disagree, i agree on the idea that i do not want to be burden down with useless stuff like for example, motor runner's helmet, that was a pain! Other things that could be useful however, what i am not sure of at the moment, i can see holding onto, if they were useful to keep that is.)

Now that I think of it, it's not so much the clutter that annoys me but some of these undeletable items adds weight in hardcoe mode
