Should Future fallout games give the option to melee with a

So basically, have you ever had an enemy get too close and find it was hard to shoot them or that you didn't have enough time to switch to an unarmed/melee weapon?

Imagine being able to either punch an enemy while holding a one-handed gun or hit an enemy with the back of the gun with a rifle type weapon. anyone think this is a good idea?

If implemented well and as a limited feature (so that it doesn't eat up the impact of melee skill with its effects), why not. Though, I don't really see it as necessary because you can still shoot at point blank range while taking hits.

Graham does it but I believe he has to switch to a melee version of his pistol, lol

but maybe in the next game it could work, and I think it would be a good idea.

VATS is not as reliable as in Fallout 3. Sometimes your character will never shoot until the target is killed by the companions. Sometimes if the enemy is too close, your character misses.
But I'd rather use VATS than pull out a knife or Pushy, probably because I'm just too lazy and do mind switching weapons too much.

A bayonet on this machine would have made it even more epic

Yes.

I mean why wouldnt you want melee in the game? Its by far practical and it can push back the enemy maybe. By far it would be a good investment for the next game.

You could just get a pistol and pistol whip the person across the head.

Yes. I wanted to be able to pistol-whip long before Honest Hearts. When I saw JG do it, I went green with envy.

However, I expect this would be difficult to implement. How do you make a single weapon that is both ranged and melee? I'm betting that Graham has two weapons: his pistol, and a club that looks like a pistol. I want to be able to pistol-whip, but I don't want to have to carry two different weapons to do it. Know what I mean?

No actually its far simpler...A gun can be used as a club...what do you do when its out of ammo? Use it to melee people with it. Its quite effective.

Bayonets would be fun.
I'd like to see combat become less clunky in the future, and this could be a step towards that.

Simple in theory, but how would they build that into the game? That's what I mean by difficult. It seems that NV has very specific weapon types and none of them are hybrids. Guns are guns. Throwing Spears are Throwing Spears. A knife is not the same as a throwing knife.

They would have to create a weapon that looked and functioned like two different weapons. What if you wanted to pistol-whip with a full clip? How would you transition?

I hope this can be managed in future Fallout games, that's for sure. I so badly want to pistol-whip something :(

Think of COD 3 how they had it. You pressed down on the joystick and it butted the rifle at the enemy or pistol wipped the enemy. They could do that and just have a specific button that does that and only let it do a small amount of damage but push back the intruder.

I thought shotguns and SMGs are the guns' melee weapons?

Easy to implement. Every FPS action game since I can't remember when has had a melee button you could map, and use to whack stuff with your pistol or rifle butt. It's not rocket science. Hardest part would be making all the melee animations for the various weapon types. This ability would have to be limited to guns, though. Not very realistic using a rocket launcher or Tesla-Beaton to club somebody with.

Only yes if it has a bayonet , otherwise no. The ripper is there for a reason, it's small, relatively light-weight, and perfect for those situations.

Definetly wouldn't mind this option. I've often wanted in those "oh crap!" moments to just whip my rifle around and start smacking away.

Bayonets would be a nice function too.

I would definitely like to see this. It would come in handy with creatures that rush up to you real quick, or for taking down a enemy using a mele weapon while you're caught fighting off others who are firing at you. I've been caught numerous times with enemies who move in too close to shoot, and always wished I could rifle butt them, or hit them with a pistol. If not to kill them then at least stun them so I can back off from them.
