Should I get Oblivion after Skyrim?

Post » Wed May 02, 2012 10:44 pm

I'm in love with Skyrim really, and I've never played Oblivion before and I'm so tempted at buying it on steam right now, should I get it?

Depends, if you want to be able to label yourself as a TES fan one day or not. If you're just a casual player then there is nothing interesting in Oblivion, it has a couple of witty quests, but combat, graphics and story are all rather inferior comparing to Skyrim. If you plan to go berserk about being a fan then you should play it for the sake of being able to say you played it. :P Also there are a couple of game mechanics you might like taht are brought over from older TES games (though somewhat butchered and dumbed compared to the old TES games) which include attributes with major skills levelling system, and one of the major things people liked was the fact that you were still able to make your own spells. I also hear Shivering Isles is totally awesome expansion so you should check the game out for that if for nothing else.

Definitely. But don't compare it to Skyrim. Consider it its own game in its own right.

You should play it. It is very different to Skyrim, but it is worth a try. Form it like you wish - with all the Quests and Additions, with the Landscape upgrading and a lot more you have much more options as in Skyrim (at the moment, I think this will change in a year or two).

Oblivion is a great game. It was one of if not the best games of it's time and It's worth going back and experienceing. You can mod it to improve the graphics which will make the adjustment to a 2006 game easier.

If you like Skyrim and give OB a fair shot you'll like it just as much.

You'll enjoy it quite a bit, unless your only a svcker for combat mechanisms & graphics.

First of all I think it is stupid that you got Skyrim and played it before even playing Oblivion. Anyway, yes you should definitely get Oblivion it was an amazing game and in some aspects better than SKyrim at least in my opnion. I hope you get it and enjoy it, I certainly did.

The best way to answer the OP question is simply to say, "I wish I were you."

Oblivion is more of a character build, and has more NPC interaction. If weaker graphics is a stumbling block you can't overcome, dont' buy the game, though it's worth pointing out at the time those inferior graphics won awards- for graphics!

I believe Oblivion is a superior all around rpg to Skyrim. But you don't have to enjoy Oblivion and believe that- clear you mind of such comparisons and just enjoy it for what it is and don't worry about it. Who knows, You want to play Morrowind before it's all over. Sort of reverse engineering the Bethesda world.

Definitely. But don't compare it to Skyrim. Consider it its own game in its own right.

Pretty much exactly what I was going to say.

I started with Oblivion, then I played Morrowind, and now I've been playing Skyrim pretty much since it's release (still not tired of it).

I love all three. And there are of course similarities. But they are different games. If you expect everything in Skyrim to be in Oblivion you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. The reverse is also true. They all have some pluses and minuses comparied with each other. And a lot of that is very subjective too.

If you do get Oblivion, I recommend getting it for the PC. Most (but not all) people seem to dislike the leveling system. Mods like nGCD can fix that. Also level scaling is very pronounced in the unmodded game. I recommend the OOO and MMM overhaul mods to fix that and make many other changes that I consider improvements. Finally retexture mods like Quarls can make Oblivion look nearly as good as Skyrim, and in some cases better in my opinion (except for NPCs which just don't look as realistic as Skyrim).

How is the game doing on the PS3? Is it a glitch-fest full of broken quests and terrible performance like Skyrim? I don't really mind a few bugs here and there or a few broken minor quests, as long as it's playable.

Other then the one bug introduced by Shivering Isles that doesn't let you cure vampirism OB runs great on Ps3. I'm playing the Goty edition on Ps3 at this very moment, it runs a lot better then Skyrim and is relatively bug free

This. You'll inevitably wind up comparing the two, OP, but try and keep the above statement in mind. The two games are much different from one another in many ways.

First of all I think it is stupid that you got Skyrim and played it before even playing Oblivion.

No it's not. What is the OP supposed to do, get a time machine to go back and do it over again? There's no particular order these games have to be played.

Haha you're stupid now for not having bought Oblivion back in 06. It'd been a better idea to not buy Skyrim at all :)

Sounds great, I'll just have to avoid vampirism then.

My two septims too. Cyrodiil is utterly beautiful to explore and the different caves, ruins and forts are nice to break it off with. Also, the towns are very life-like and interesting to explore as well.

Get it I say!

Do you know how rude you're being? Seriously, you're basically calling the OP stupid, and this sort of rudeness has no place here in OB: General. Go back to the Sky forums where your rudeness will go unnoticed, please.

Pretty sure you and Mirocu missed the sarcasm here. He was pointing out how absurd the earlier post was.

Yeah sorry if anyone got offended. Paying further attention will reveal that my first TES game was also Skyrim.

Having spent about 50 hours in Skyrim I found myself back in Cyrodiil just because Skyrim felt so bleak and cold to me,it's just a personal preference but I enjoy the "feel" of Oblivion, especially if I don't trigger the Ob gates and just create myself a good "adventurer" type character....so to the OP I say yes,go for it!

Skyrim was the first TES game I played. I liked it so decided to get Oblivion a try. All I can say is that I love the game. It seems to me it has a certain something the Skyrim lacks.

It could be the vibrant colors maybe, or the towns? I personally love the thriving forests, I always feel at peace in the Great Forest
