Should I Get an XBox One or PS4?

Post » Thu Jul 02, 2015 9:03 am

I've been looking at a couple of systems recently and been thinking about getting one, Both systems pretty much have the same library of games (other then exclusives) and are FINALLY getting some good games in. The XB1 is grabbing my attention cause I've heard they're going to be coming backwards compatible with 360 games (probably not all 360 games but it's a start) and you no longer need the Kinetic to play it. I'm already experienced with the PS4 and so far both units act the same however the XB1 is slightly cheaper then the PS4 and I'm leaning towards getting a XB1.

What to buy...?

All I'll say is if it were me, I'd get the PS4. (Period, or at least first.)

But that's because it's what my friends have so I can just borrow the games they buy. :hehe:

I guess it's a bit of "punishment" for MS too, having forced the Kinect on everyone when it first came out. (Then the interwebs exploded so they reneged.)

Get whichever one of them most of your friends have.

I am intrigued by the PS4 virtual reality headset. I have an Xbox One, and am hoping Microsoft bring out something to compete. Still, the Oculus is coming out soon so I guess it isn't that big a deal. I still say that it's mostly important being able to play with your mates. Gaming nowadays is a very social thing.

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Gaming is not like before when each system had it's own collection of games. I could pretty much buy either the PS4 or Xbox1 I would be ok.

I've enjoyed the PS4 exclusives. Haven't really cared about a single one of the Xbox One's exclusives yet. The most that seems to happen is that there is a handful of exclusive DLC for PS4 and a smaller amount of exclusive content for the Xbox One.

PS4 gained a lot of ground this generation imo. More exclusives, better exclusives (imo) and better services. The PS store has been having a lot of discounted content.

I'd recommend the PS4, but if your friends are on Xbox One, go in that direction. If they are on PS4? Well, no brainer. :P

If you put it that way the XBOX One...

However, there are some diffrences you may consider:

PRICE:

You may find the Standalone Xbox One console a little cheaper as the PS4 console.

DESIGN:

Microsofts XBOX One is far, far larger. The PS4 is sleeker, and slimmer.

The XBOX One is 10 per cent larger than its predecessor, the Xbox 360. It weighs around the same as the last console,~ 3Kg.

The PS4 is only marginally lighter, at 2.8kg. The extra size of the XBOX One, is more likely aid cooling.

The charging cables are also something to consider...!!!
The XBOX One has a huge power brick that it requires in order to turn on.
The PS4 on the other hand has a single power cable that runs from socket to console with no power brick in sight, so it's easier to move from room to room.
At the end, neither console have had any major hardware issues so far.
CONNECTIVITY:
The PS4, which has far fewer ports.

It has two USB ports at the front alongside the Blu-ray drive, the power and disc eject buttons.

Around back you get the power port at the bottom left, while along the top row you have optical out, HDMI, Ethernet and AUX ports.

On the other hand, the XBOX One has a vast array of ports surrounding the whole console.

On the front side, it's pretty simple - just the disc drive and the eject button

But around back, there's the AC port for power, a HDMI out that connects your console directly to your TV, Optical out and a HDMI in for feeding your cable TV box into your XBOX One.

Then there's a pair of USB ports, the Kinect port, IR out and the Ethernet port. There's also a lock port that allow you to connect a laptop lock to secure your console.

INTERFACE:

The look of the XBOX One software is heavily inspired by elements of Windows Phone and Windows 8.

It has a modern look, but many people have criticised the software for its glitchiness and odd behaviour.

It can be a little complicated to navigate at first, especially if you bought the Kinect-free XBOX One bundle.

If you own Windows 8 for PC, you will definitely find the XBOX One UI easier, because of its similarities with the Windows 8 Metro layout.

The PS4 has a simpler less ambitious user interface, as it leaves you scrolling in just one direction most of the time.
All your content is easily accessible without having any sub-folders and the like. It's definitely the more straightforward of the two UIs.

CONTROLLERS:

The DualShock 4 feels like more of a change. Microsoft has stuck with what worked so well in the Xbox 360 controller with the XBOX One pad, and as such it's more of a tweak than a full ground-up redesign.

There are two main changes:

The XBOX One pad has rumble motors built into the triggers to give you feedback when, for example, shooting guns.

Also those rumble triggers easily make the XBOX One the better console to play racing games.

Microsoft has also made huge improvement to the D-pad. The mushy Xbox 360 D-pad has been switched for one that's much more clicky and responsive.

It works very well, on Street Fighter-style fighting games.

Sadly, the XBOX One controller still requires to be powered by a pair of AA batteries, rather than being rechargeable like the PS4's DualShock 4.

You'll have to buy the Play and Charge kit separately for each controller. !!!

And again, like with the UI, if you are a PC gamer, you may prefer the XBOX One controller because of its familiarity to the Xbox 360 pad.

The DualShock 4, is a bit chunkier than the previous DualShock controller and a lot heavier too, giving a better feel than the last-gen Dualshock 3 pad.

Sony has also massively improved the anologue sticks in the DualShock 4. So, the the new pad is great for almost all types of console games. !!!

There's also a new touch pad on the front, between the sticks and the main buttons, and a Share button to make uploading your gameplay videos easy.

i would say it depends on what sort of games you enjoy, and which console gets more exclusives within that genre..

for example, Sony's consoles always have had far more JRPGs than its competition, while the XBox line has always had a larger selection of shooters

when it comes to picking a console, it does not matter what the system specs or extra features are, its all about the exclusives and their quality..

Um---a little problem here.

Spoiler
No personal close friends at least not a lot of the game playing types.
:P.

The PS4 and XB1 have pretty much the same library of games other then exclusives, I'm covered with most PS games with my PS3 and Vita (I just hope the VIta gets a FFVII remake port). If Sony would just drop the price of the PS4 to either match the XB1 or lower I might just get a PS4 again but then again XB1 could become backwards compatible with 360 games and that might make it worth getting.

Backwards compatibility has never been a major draw for me. I tend to keep my consoles, not trade em in.

I also would question how that backwards compatibility will work out. I'm not very confident Microsoft will deliver on that in a satisfactory way.

keep in mind, likely not all 360 games will run on a XB1 (Just like not all Original XB games worked on the 360), and those that do will likely play far worse than they would on an actual 360 since its going to have to emulate them.. Morrowind played worse and was buggier on the 360 than it did on an Actual Xbox, same with the GTA titles (not to mention, much longer loading screens as well)..

then again, Robotech: Battlecry played just as well on the 360 as it did on the original XB (aside from the longer load times).. but then again, it was a rather simple game (although, still a fun play for those of us who grew up watching the show)..

if playing 360 games is important to you, you would be better off going to a pawnshop and grabbing a 360 for $80. 360 games will play far better on it than they would on a XB1, and you would have access to every 360 game rather than the handful they decide to make backwards compatible..

Eh not really, most games you can get on the 360 (besides Halo) you can get on the PS3.

They're practically the same thing at this point. It all depends on what you're looking for with either console. What exclusive games appeal to you, the service they offer, and even whatever controller suits you.

I've owned a Xbox One since August 2014. It's been good in some areas, while in others it has yet to impress me. The controller is great and just as good as the 360 controller and the service is still good with the Games for Gold and nice discounts on the store. However, I have yet to be impressed by any exclusives the Xbox One offers. And any exclusive that does interest me can be played on the PC anyway (which is the case most of the time for Xbox exclusives it seems).

But like you say, the Xbox One is getting backwards compatibility which I look forward to. Only downside being it's only a select amount of games you're allowed to play at a time until more are added, so you can't just shove in any game you want and play it. They're likely to make only the most popular games backwards compatible first so if your favorite games are more obscure titles, don't expect to be playing them any time soon. Although games like Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, and Fallout 3 are among the most demanded so that's a good thing. And if you're looking to get Fallout 4 on console, there is that whole thing with mods coming to Xbox One for the game, although who knows how that will function.

I'm not an 'incredibly enthusiastic fan' so I'm not biased towards either console. I actually plan on getting a PS4 for exclusives like Bloodborne and The Last Guardian. I'd say if you really want the option of backwards compatibility I'd get a Xbox One. Exclusive content wise, the PS4, since in my opinion they seem to have the best exclusive games and not to mention Sony is good at being an ass of a company that likes to rip content out of games available on all platforms to make it exclusive to their console. A ridiculous anti-consumer practice if you ask me.

Rip out content? More like Namco promises exclusives, when in reality they're just timed exclusives that they'll release later on Sony consoles with crap tons more content. If you like Namco games (Tales series, Soul Calibur, Souls, Bloodborne, etc) they normally cater more to Sony in spite of being multi-console publishers. Every one of those series I listed has had Sony exclusive titles (except etc :P))

Which doesn't apply to when this happens to the Batman games, Destiny, or more recently announced, Hitman; as Sony's E3 press conference this year was full of either announcing exclusives or the exclusive content that they took from games available on all platforms.

If you're going to make a entire game exclusive, fair enough. But I will always be against content within multi-platform games being exclusive, be they timed or not. I didn't pay the same price for game to get less content than someone else who just to happens to be playing on whatever console. It's ridiculous when Activision does (despite being highly expected at this point), it ridiculous when Microsoft does it, it's ridiculous when Bethesda does it, and it's ridiculous when Sony does it.

Sony has all but abandoned the Vita, don't hold out hope for the FF7 remake being ported to it.

As others have said, the only differentiating factor (of note) is the exclusive games, as you know FF7 remake will be coming to the PS4 first.

You should devise a list of exclusives that you would like to play for each platform and compare them and go from there IMO.

Also if you're buying either console make sure to get the Phantom Pain for it, you'll appreciate the step up from Ground Zeroes on the PS3

Legion, you aren't getting the same amount of content because Microsoft won't shell out the money to get exclusive content. Sony has zero obligation to help, in any way, shape or form, a Microsoft customer. The ones to blame for exclusive content are the gaming companies themselves. Not sure how it is anti consumerism from Sony's perspective. I mean they have a range of anti consumer policies, much like any company, but this isnmt one of them.

Xbox One, they're having backwards compatibility and that includes Fallout 3 as well. You can play it on Xbox One, I recommend you get a Xbox One for now. Sony says "Backwards Compatibility is too much work" Lazy, despicable slobs.

if you can't decide which console to get, flip a coin. i got the Xbox One because i wanted the Skype option.

you can buy a battery charger thingy for the Xbox One. remotes for pc4 cost more and charge doesn't last as long as the Xbox One battery charger thingy. the Xbox One is larger but heat build up is a concern for the pc4. if the power supply for either dies, the Xbox One would be easier to replace. if one is going to to carry a console around place to place, than ps4 would be the better buy.

i took a look at the games available and found several that i would play for each console. in shot flip a coin if you can't decide.

With Xbox One being confirmed to support mods (maybe not all mods but still, mods yes), I'll go with Xbox One myself.

Actually, it's not laziness. They just want you to buy the games digitally instead.

not true at all, the Vita has a very large catalog of games, with several heavily marketed games coming out within the next year..

sure, they are more "Japanese Style" as people call them, but the Vita is actually quite popular.. just because you don't see the same kind of games on it as you would see on the PS3/4 or XB360/XB1 does not mean its "all but abandoned".

For me the choice is very easy.

The PS4 have a number of exclusive games coming that I find interesting, like The Last Guardian, Nier 2 and others. While the only game XB1 have for me is the upcoming Scalebound. Not to mention that multiplatform games tend to run better on the PS4.

The only thing I don't like about the PS4 is the inability to play PS1 & PS2 games from the Playstation Store. Both the PS3 and Vita could play PS1 games from day one, and now it's been over 1.5 years and the PS4 still can't do it.

That said, since neither console have any game I want to play right now, I won't buy any of them anytime soon. I'm guessing I will buy a PS4 in 2017 or something. And how knows, maybe by then the PS4 is able to play PS1 & PS2 games. And if I ever buy a XB1 I guess it will be in 2022 or something

PS4. It's sleeker, RAM is clocked at 5000mhz and the GPU is 50% more powerful than the Xbox One. I'll probably get an Xbox One later down the road if the exclusives are good, but right now PS4 is where it's at.

Hmm, interesting, the auto-censor doesn't auto-censor topic titles.

Anyway, i've always been with Sony, but i really haven't seen any reason to get PS4 yet
At this point, at least, I'd rather just use that money to upgrade my PC

I had the same dilemma trying to decide which one to choose. The PS4 had some really interesting exclusives but so does XBox One. It really came down to 2 things that made me choose XBox ~

1) I love the XBox One controller

2) backwards compatibility - they should have 100 titles by fall

I have had both XBox 360 and a PS3 so I may eventually get a PS4 some time down the road.
