Should I give oblivion a chance or not?

Post » Mon Nov 28, 2011 12:46 pm

Skyrim is my first tes game and probably the single player rpg I spent the most time playing in my life. I bought fallout 3 but couldn't get into it after 10 hours and was stuck on a quest I couldn't find the route anyways.

Yesterday I bought oblivion for $5 on the steam sale and checked it out for 1 hour before I gave up. The interface and movement and graphics ruin the game for me. I mean I'm still at the main city and the spells and the way you attack and everything just seem kinda lame. Skyrim has way better graphics even on the lowest setting and the combat is more fluid and enjoyable and it's less complex with all the archeotypes you have to pick for oblivion.

Should I give oblivion a chance? Does it ever get nearly as good as skyrim?

Give it a chance, it's a really good game and some aspects of it even out perform Skyrim. Same goes for Morrowind.

The three latest games have had their focus so different from each other that they each out-perform one another in one way or another. So playing all 3 of them is perfectly valid.

EVery Elder Scrolls games has its charms. The nice thing about the older ones is the plethora of mods available that allow you to customize your experience.

Welcome to Bethesda's target audience, people of the forums. Graphics and complexity are game breakers for this audience. Don't ever play Daggerfall.

Now that I'm done mocking you; the guild quests are all about eight times better and eight times longer than Skyrim's...other than that there isn't anything really special.

Oblivion is (obviously this is personal opinion, and others will disagree) the weak link in the series - I still enjoyed it, but it wasn't a patch on Morrowind or Skyrim. And it has NOTHING to do with graphics.

However playing on PC gives you the opportunity to install a lot of mods!!! Hop on over to the Oblivion modding forums, there are threads there where people give lists of their preferred mods with links to download them. Personally I recommend The Lost Spires, and Kragenir's Death Quest to add quests to the game, Lost Spires adds some interesting dungeons, and KDQ adds loads of side quests and dialogue to each city and all the small villages (in addition to the main quest of the mod, and the quests include a bit of tongue in cheek humour and real world/pop culture references so if you want something deadly serious it might not be for you, although I think it is one of the best mods available) which IMO makes it more like Skyrim in terms of being able to pick up quests wherever you go. There are also texture replacers that will improve the look, if that's what you want.

But this is not a question for this forum, head over to the Oblivion boards....

I like Skyrim, but I hated Oblivion. Oblivion was just super generic in just about every way.
You might like to try Fallout 3, though.

Oblivion was excellent; I played it twice through.

But I doubt I'll go back and play it again now that Skyrim's out. I never played Morrowind, but judging from the screen shots I've seen, Oblivion was a major leap beyond Morrowind, and Skyrim seems to be an even bigger leap beyond Oblivion.

If you're in for a good story be prepared to be let down but the gameplay is solid. My only other complaint besides the story is the awful repetitive environments so if you can get past all that Oblivion is for you.

I've played Morrowind, Oblivion and now Skyrim. Out of the three, Oblivion was by far the worst for it's time. Now that Skyrim is out I wouldn't bother playing it for a second. Skyrim is so huge that it is unlikely that you will ever complete all of the static quests, not to mention the quests that will keep coming up indefinitely.

I say just chalk that $5 up to a donation to BGS for making Skyrim. ;)

I loved Morrowwind, hated Oblivion and am really enjoying Skyrim. I couldn't get into Oblivion at all, didn't like a lot of aspects of the game and think I played it for a total of less then 5 hours. I barely was able to "give it a chance" because it's simply a bad game IMO. If your try to play Oblivion hoping it ever gets as good as Skyrim I think your going to be disapointed. Do yourself a favor, play Skyrim more and leave Oblivion alone.

Oblivion is quite close to not being an RPG. The team in charge clearly saw the games market as not being able to support a true RPG and as a result the game was developed much more as a first person hack and slash fighting game. The graphics (for the time) were awesome, the game world is beautiful and engaging. The level scalling was absolutely horrible though (positively discriminated against RPG, broke immersion and was just there so that utterly lazy gamers could wander round doing what they liked when they liked without any constraints), masses of computer generated dungeons that all looked the same, level scaled loot so it didn't really matter which dungeon you went it..... outside of the quests it felt flat... Skyrim is a much better RPG than Oblivion. You will probably still like it, but it's not guaranteed, depends how much RPG you want.

I would say take the plunge with Morrowind. If you can get your head around 10 yr old graphics that look dated now, the game inside is awesome. Morrowind was a huge commercial success, but the success seemed to come as a nice extra because at it's heart Morrowind was designed by people that loved RPG, comes across as a labour of love. Oblivion was clearly 100% a commercial venture from start to finish and was very compromised as an RPG as a result. The games cost a fortune to develop now, they have to be commercial, we have to appreciate they need mass appeal, so I am pleasantly surprised Skyrim is a return to something closer to an full on RPG.

I loved Oblivion, but i'm not sure how much you would enjoy it if Skyrim is what really floats your boat. They are definitely different and playing Oblivion will feel like a downgrade in most ways but the menu system. You would probably enjoy playing Morrowind more than Oblivion after playing Skyrim.

I always find these "should I play this?" threads intriguing. If you try a game and don't like it, try something else. I bought Fallout 3 because the "old" Fallout games were great, but I just couldn't get into it. It was like Oblivion with different graphics, so for me there wasn't enough to make it unique. Maybe in a few years I'll feel nostalgic and give it another try. But that's the good thing about demo's: many times I see a game and think "Cool!" and then play the demo and can't stand it. Life is too short to play what you think you SHOULD rather than what you WANT to play. :-)

In my opinion Oblivion is a fantastic game. I've been playing since it's release and I'm not tired of it.

I also have Skyrim and like it so far. But Skyrim has been release for less than a week. So I can't really tell about Skyrim yet. It seems great so far.

Remember Oblivion is not Skyrim or Fallout 3. So if you expect it to be, disappointment may follow.

And mods can dramatically improve Oblivion. I'm using the OOO overhaul mod along with MMM for creatures, and Quarls retexturing. I've been playing with mods almost since release, since I didn't like the level scaling. So its' difficult for me to comment on the unmodded game.

So basically if you change most everything about the game it's finally worth playing? Yea, like I said the game isn't worth it to play.

Well, Morrowind was the last real rpg game in TES. After that TES has become "arcady", fast paced or, like Beth likes to call it, streamlined. I'll be surprised if Beth implements again the deep learning curve of Daggerfall or Morrowind. Luckily for Beth Skyrim seems to be more enjoyable and refined than Oblivion.

play it for the lore, if it interests you. if you just want a game to hacknslash and adventure in then you might as well just play skyrim.

the whole concept of the oblivion gates is pretty cool though, i honestly wouldnt pass it up. id go back and play morrowind too, but youd definatly hate the gameplay.

Initially i liked oblivion, but as time passed it became more and more disenchanted with it. I installed OOO, one of the best mods out there, right away, and that made it quite good for my first and maybe second character(neither of which completed the main quest, however), but after a while the ridiculous SAMENESS just starts to get to you. Essentially, in oblivion you can go into one dungeon, one fort, and one ruin, and you have seen the entire game.

The only other interesting parts of the game were the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild questlines, but none of them were actually all that challenging...largely just running around looking for things, and because the stealth element was so badly balanced in that game, it made much of what you did either too easy or almost impossible.

Honestly, it was a lot like Skyrim when it comes to problems. Oblivion had most of Skyrim's problems, except worse, and also other things that were fixed in Skyrim. If someone were to make an Oblivion mod for Skyrim, it would be about perfect, but it still wouldn't make me go back to oblivion.

Try out mods.

To fix combat you might want to try out Deadly Reflex - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=8273
For the interface maybe try this - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10763
And you'll probably want Wrye Bash - http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=22368

Other than those things I can't think what you might want, but you might look into overhaul mods such as Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and some other stuff.
