should of gone with cryengine 3 after all?

Post » Tue Jun 22, 2010 2:25 am

before you say "cryengine is only good for fps games *hurr hurr derp*", watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Kvl31g77Z8
at about 35 seconds you can see a 3rd person view of a rpg esque charecter, so dont tell me cryengine 3 cant do rpgs.

anyways, i was quite under whelmed by the screen shots i saw, as i was hoping for dramatically improved graphics in the 5 and a half years since oblivions release, but all i saw were improved textures and maby better lighting/shadows.

now, i think that the cryengine 3 would have made an excellent choice as it ports wonderfully onto console (which painfully, bethesda seems to be aiming for specifically) while still allowing pc users to push their systems to the maximum extent they can, and even challenge future hard ware.

id like to hear your opinions.

Seriously, another graphics thread? It was said in one of the other threads that you only saw the poor quality scans, so how can you really judge the graphical quality from those? So far we know there is better lighting, shadows, dynamic snow, better water effects, better characters (facial features and customisable bodies), and probably some other stuff I can't remember. Me personally, I'll reserve judgement until I see a moving image.

CryEngine can't do sandbox RPGs, and RPG type character? What? It can't do sandbox RPGs and what is going on with people and these graphics? I thought they looked great.

I find it hard to believe any of us could more accurately identify the most appropriate engine for a game than the game developer itself.

This again...

I don't particularly have any opinion until we see actual high-resolution images and much more importantly, the game in video form. If there is a significant visual fidelity increase from Oblivion with nice draw distances and a rock-steady framerate, I would be very pleased. Graphics are secondary to gameplay regardless...as long as they are functional enough to draw the player into the world (and it definitely looks like it), I couldn't complain. We already know that faces have seen a major improvement. If the same can be said for animation, my graphics checklist would be fulfilled.

Right, because it's more efficient for a developer to get an engine they've never worked with before rather than having them develop an in-house one and know all its ins-and-outs and how to use it efficiently.

Give me the name of a released RPG with Cryengine and I'll be happy to discuss this. Other than that Tech Demos always look better than they actually are. There is no actual content in a tech demo, most of the time anything a little bit beyond the area that the camera shot is in is empty. What we saw with these screens is footage being taken from a game already partially in the making and already with massive amounts of interactable stuff all around you. Crysis 2 is going to be on Cryengine 3 but it isn't open world and most of the buildings won't let you go in them.

I care more about the gameplay than the graphics.
What I've seen of the graphics looks good, and it's good enough... and I guess those poor quality scans don't really gives Skyrim's graphics the justice it deserves. :P

Yes, simply because of the fact that it is optimized for consoles and unrestricted for PC, it looks great, and it's built for open environments with lots of vegetation.

yeah, because every person that works with the engine helped develop it

My opinion?

Bethesda would have to buy the license to use the engine.

Plus, if you life crysis so much, I think you should play that game and wait for crysis 2.

I like the way the engine looks but I wasn't at all blown away. As beautiful as the cryengine 3 is I never really thought that Bethesda would be using it or that their engine would display the same graphics.

That said there was a small part of me that was hoping (especially after the idiots over at GI raving over how amazing Skyrim looked) that it would really knock my socks off, but oh well.

Actually the first thing I thought when I saw the screens was that it looked alot like a love child of Oblivion and Fallout with slight improvements.

I don't really know anything about gaming engines so I have no idea if the cryengine 3 allows for the sort of worlds and gameplay of Bethesda's games. I mean I'm sure they did the best they could lol.

Anyway I'm looking forward to gameplay vids :turned:

If one developer doesn't know how to do something with the engine I'm pretty sure it would be better for them to have access to a developer or developers who do know a lot about the engine since they helped shape it.

i agree with you when you say tech demos always look better than they are, how ever crysis has already proven its self, and the cryengine its self is well known for being highly adaptable, heck, one of the things they were gunning for was adaptability.

This. Tech demos do not equal a game with the massive scope of an Elder Scrolls game in terms of locations, NPCs, quests, scripting, and open-world experience.

Graphics are always secondary and in my opinion rightfully so in TES RPG's. The main focus in any RPG should be the game play, not the graphics. I had no problems with the graphics of any TES game, I won't now. My focus will be on the game play and the game mechanics.

hey, dont judge me too harshly because my DP is a crysis pic, i love TES and have spent serveral hundred more hours playing morrowind than all crysis related games combined.
maby i should have changed my DP to "elder scrolls really devoted fan" before making this thread and then some of you would have listened to my points, but ah well
