Should horses be able to jump?

Actually, despite what you see on TV and the like, horses don't jump over things. they usually stop or go around larger objects. Horses that were bred for war also were not trained to jump, cause the last thing you want is your horse trying to jump over people/corpses while you are trying to smack them upside the head. The only horses really trained historical for jumping are show horses, which probably only nobility and the like would have. But of course TES is not "the real word", nor is our history the same, so who knows. Maybe there horses are like michael jordan's of the dmoesticated animals.

There are very, very few horses that are trained to jump on command. It's an extremely advanced maneuver for a horse both because it is very strange/difficult for them (it's something they wouldn't normally do of their own accord) and because it is useless to most riders (I only need my horse to jump over real obstacles). It's kind of equivalent to a human standing en pointe in ballet, or doing a back handspring.

Whether a well-trained horse would avoid a tree... well, that depends on a lot of factors, and generally the way the horse avoids a tree will be unpleasant for its rider. A well-trained rider would not point his horse at a tree.

I just envisioned my Altmer handsomely dashing along on his horse.. to get swept off its back by a branch and meet the forest floor.

Horses are flight animals, so in reality they would bolt/run away. Like someone else said, I'd rather have it run away than attack. But not so that it would bolt from a mudcrap or something :D. lol...And they should be able to survive through fights with some creatures (like mountain lions, etc.).

I think that (unless you are on it and can control it well) horses should flee from enemies, but you should have an option to command your horse to stay somewhere or follow you, and have the option to tie it to a tree or something.

It would be a well trained war horse that doesnt buck at the sight of a wolf, or try to run in the opposite direction of the fight.
Real war horses never did this, though they did get nervous and bash a friendly soldier who came too close his head in.
There would be no point to horses if they just added an extra annoyance factor to travel and fighting.

Then I guess we need tough trained warhorses from Skyrim's greatest trainers. Which sound like they would be in Windhelm or Whiterun.

If they could jump it would feel too much like your doing dressage. And that is weird enough in modern day versions.

Just fyi, you don't jump when riding dressage. Dressage is on the flat.
It's called showjumping ;)

But, yea I think it would be cool if you could command your horse to stay put/tie it up.

Hmm well you would be the one to know:)

I thought it had an odd name, found it and posted:) Google-fu failed me. I guess I should have used those world Equestrian games tickets last year:)
