Should horses be able to jump?

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 11:29 am

So, let's say mounts are confirmed, and we could ride horses in Skyrim again. Should they be able to jump over obstacles (fences, small gaps, etc.) like something similar to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood? There have been times in Oblivion where I'd be riding my horse somewhere and I'd forget that we can't jump with it, and I'd run into a fence, and get frustrated when I'd have to turn around and go around the fence. So what do you guys think? Should our mounts (again, if they do appear in Skyrim) have the ability to jump over small obstacles?

If it's done well like in Red Dead Redemption, then yes.

Your horse could jump in Oblivion, iirc. It wasn't super useful, but I think you could.

Yeah, horses could jump, I remember hours of fun jumping off that cliff where you fight the Udafrykte Matron.

I would prefer an auto-jump, in Oblivion it looked stupid to have your horse jump from a standstill at your command.

So gallop fast, and your horse will automatically jump any obstacle (plus auto-swerve trees) - there's not bicycles.

Oblivion's horses couldn't jump if you weren't moving...

I like those ideas, but a horse should still jump on my command.
A well trained horse would do that, as well as automatically avoid a tree.

I'd think of it Legend of Zelda style, basically the horse will only jump if going really fast and if there is an obstacle in front of it. But, it could jump if there isn't something in front of it too, I suppose.

There are very, very few horses that are trained to jump on command. It's an extremely advanced maneuver for a horse both because it is very strange/difficult for them (it's something they wouldn't normally do of their own accord) and because it is useless to most riders (I only need my horse to jump over real obstacles). It's kind of equivalent to a human standing en pointe in ballet, or doing a back handspring.

Whether a well-trained horse would avoid a tree... well, that depends on a lot of factors, and generally the way the horse avoids a tree will be unpleasant for its rider. A well-trained rider would not point his horse at a tree.

How about this: If horses are mounts in the game, should they be more viable in combat? In Oblivion (and perhaps this was because I was using that paint horse you get before I had Shadowmere) my horse literally got schooled by a troll, and then proceeded to run through the wilderness of Cyrodiil to never be seen again. Should horses actually be useful and have greater survivability? Should players also have the option to even fighting on horses assuming mounts are in? What options can we think of (other than fast travel) would make horses more practical and very beneficial to the player in Skyrim?

Ha. Horses would be more practical if they just started by running away from enemies, instead of fighting.

It's a horse, what do you expect it to do. It's not like your horse is Ruin(Darksiders). Running away from combat is more useful as long as they don't make a bee line for a town and make you chase them through the wilderness.

They definitely should be able to jump. The way/height they jump in Oblivion is pathetic. And they should have more than just 2 gaits. They should walk, trot, canter and gallop (like in AC) instead of just walk and canter like in Oblivion.
One of the scenes in the gameplay trailer has a horse standing about, so I'm guessing that they are confirmed.

Horses are flight animals, so in reality they would bolt/run away. Like someone else said, I'd rather have it run away than attack. But not so that it would bolt from a mudcrap or something :D. lol...And they should be able to survive through fights with some creatures (like mountain lions, etc.).

maybe a dialog command for the horse to stay put would be good when approaching an enemy stronghold and you want the horse to be safe a few meters away, like petting the horse on the forehead or something akin to that effect.

For an example of how to implement horses, look no further than Red Dead Redemption or Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Beautifully done in those games.

One thing I would add would be the ability to use your horse to carry items. In my opinion the player's capacity for carrying things is way too large at the moment. I'd like to see that significantly reduced, so that in order to carry loads of loot you'd have to invest in a horse or some other beast of burden.
