Should magic be more exotic?

Post » Sat Dec 25, 2010 10:25 pm

Am I the only one who thinks magic in TES looks less then amazing? I've only played Morrowind and Oblivion, and magic looked lame in both. There was nothing different about a fireball spell at level one, and a fireball spell level 50 except for damage. The only spells that look and feel different were conjuration spells, and telekinesis. And only slightly, since they used the same animations for casting as every other spell in the game. I've been playing Dragon Age 2 and would love to see some more creative spells like crushing prison, rock armor, or firestorm. Spells that stand out more the the rest. I know dragon shouts sorta fit this description, but those are super powerful and require a recharge. Common spells could be underpowered by comparison, but able to use as long as you have enough magic to cast it. And it old certainly bring magic back to magic. Does anyone think this could be pulled off in a TES game without ruining dragon shouts?

And here I thought it was already confirmed that basically exactly what you said is already in the game.. Including firestorm ala gameplay trailer.

Yea I'd like new spells and the old spells to look better. I'd like a transformation spell like in Gothic (transform yourself in an animal).

It's already been confirmed. Holding down spells cause mana to drain, and damage over time, area of effect "blasts", charred bodies, frozen bodies, etc

Watch the new trailer...

I'm pretty sure it's already been said that Bethesda is trying to make spells feel more unique and, well, magical, not sure if they'll succeed or not because we've so far seen only a few spells, and even if one spell looks impressive on its own, it's not going to be so great if there are 10 other ones that are exactly the same except for the color of their particle affects. In short, we'll need to see more spells in action to judge if Bethesda can really deliver what's promised. For now, we can only take their word for it.

With Spellmaking being confirmed as being out, devs have spent more emphasis on spells and their effects. I am looking forward to seeing what spells and perks we can use to make magic more fun. IMO, spellmaking was a joke, there was so many ways to manipulate the magic system.

No we can't let this thread die down.

Okay but seriously I think will have some interesting animations, a nice fire shockwave is a good sign for things to come.

Yeah, I've proposed the same thing many times. Made some suggestions in this thread: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1172144-spell-effects-and-staffs/

You can also check the thread in my sig (although it's closed) for a lot of good ideas given by users here.

When was it confirmed to be out? It was my understanding the reason they were having trouble implementing it was because of all these fancy effects.

Which honestly is a perfectly fine trade in my opinion.

That's bullpoop that spellmaking is out. I mean that just really svcks. So the mages of the mages guild (college of whispers or whatever name it is now) can write spells into your grimoire but YOU, the Player, cannot do this? That to me is a joke.

A more accurate way of putting it is that it's not implemented yet, and the devs are palying around with various ideas to see whether or not they can make something that works well. Spellmaking's fate is yet undecided.
EDIT: one thing that's certain is that even if it is in, it will be completely different from the spreadsheet-like system we had in Morrowind and Oblivion. They consistently state that the "spreadsheetty feel" of magic is what they disliked the most about it, and that's what they are aiming to ged rid of.

Sadly. Spell making is a defining feature of TES games, it would be a shame for it not to be included.

I'd like to see them change the different shields in alteration(lightning, frost, fire) to something a bit more dynamic as well. Frost shield could slow the attack speed by X (based on lvl of shield) of enemies who attack you, Fire shield could make enemies burn for X damage over X seconds, and lightning shield could...I don't know, just do direct damage? The shields have been pretty boring in past TES games...as they just give shield and a resist of a particular type (which is pretty useless when you've got fairly plentiful magic resist in these games).
