Should Nehrim influence Skyrim?

Post » Wed Mar 30, 2011 11:42 am

Sorry if this thread has been done before, but I searched and was unable to find it.

For those that don't know,Nehrim is a Total Conversion for Oblivion. It contains a completely new, hand-built world, numerous quests, many exciting dungeons, new weapons, armors, items and spells, full German voice acting, a new soundtrack and much more. Here's a thread that discusses the mod and how to use it: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1159104-nehrim-and-mods-ii/ and the developer's website: http://nehrim.de/indexEV.html

Among the many parts of Nehrim that are very similar to TES there are many changes made. While I thoroughly enjoy the TES games I wonder if experiencing the changes in Nehrim should give the Skyrim developers reason to consider being influenced by the mod.

I realize that some of the changes have been promised in Skyrim (Ex: Broken up game world, less leveled list work.), but I'm keeping them as 'differences' all the same. Some of the changes I like, some I do not. I am not espousing any of the changes, merely asking for feedback on whether you'd like to see any of them influence Skyrim. While I realize that you do not need to play the game to have an opinion about a feature of it, I am unable to provide the full experience of a feature in the one sentence long description of it. I would recommend playing Nehrim before voicing your opinion too strongly, but feel free to do so all the same.

If you think of any other design differences that should be in the poll let me know. Thanks for participating.

The main thing I liked was the beautifully hand-crafted environments. So many great sights in that game.

And the capitol city Erothin was MAGNIFICENT.

NO, never. Nehrim was to linear. To typical of an RPG. And all the dialog was in German.

The biggest thing it should take from Nehrim is having more than a handful of voice actors.

Lol just imagine the faces of all those poor people who would buy the game and find it's all in German. Well I guess it wouldn't be a problem if you speak German.

"Greater focus on the main quest and less on side quests."

 Yeah, I'll take a pass on this one.

I don't intend to play but can't vote for that as there is no option available for "haven't played and don't know how Nehrim handles things" in the second part of the poll.

I'd definitely download it if I were you and I were trying to kill time.

It's not a better game but it makes a much better use of the CS than Bethesda did.

As for it being in German, that's because... you know... it was made by a small German team.

I guess it's implied that we take his word for it. I haven't played it but i know all about it and it is what it is as a TC. Which is to say that it works as an addition to the Oblivion engine but wouldn't stand on it's own. So...none of the above, save it for a Skyrim TC.

And all the dialog was in German.

And how is that the game's fault? It has English subtitles (I don't know what quality however, I've played the german version).

I've played Nehrim, and it was more similar to Gothic than to TES.

But the level scaling was much better compared to Oblivion or Fallout 3,
so was the Arena (more diverse combat).

The main storyline was much more heroic, and personal (and in my opinion better) than in previous Elder Scrolls games (I haven't played Daggerfall yet.).
You really could shape the land, and you weren't given the feeling that you are the only hero.

The dialogues, and the side-characters were well-written.

And it had considerable amount of easter eggs, and fun-characters too.

There's an arena? I've finished the game but never found it.

Yeah, there is.

The core game hadn't, but the patches added a LOT of content.

Well, firstly, when the OP says take influence from Nehrim, I don't think they mean the language in which it was recorded.

And you don't have to like Nehrim more than Oblivion, but does that mean it should take no influence AT ALL from ANY of the features? Think about them indicidually, rather than in the context of the game, since the poll is about each feature.

Nehrim felt like a Gothic conversion. I say no to that.

Even though the voices were in German (and I barely speak German), the voice acting was a gazillion times better than Oblivion.
I also liked the variety in quests and plot twists-and-turns. Plus the beautiful hand-crafted areas. Well done, Nehrim.

I think that was the biggest difference I could think of that I didn't want to include in the poll, lol.

I don't know what huge changes were there that is unique to Nehrim...

XP system? Don't want.
Level scaling? It is needed in some cases.
Fast travel? We have alternatives, and you can always ignore the map if you don't like it.
World map separated by mountains? We'll definitely have that but not because of Nehrim...
Main quest over side-quests? No.
Stricter spellcasting? We'll have a completely different spell system.
Storage? We always had that in houses
Fewer quest markers? Sure, why not.
Unique bosses? Sure, why not.
Banks? I really don't see much reason to it, but why not...
More diverse land? We'll have that...
Optional, dangerous dungeon? Sure, why not.
Bigger dungeons? Sure, why not.

I've never played Nehrim because I game on the Xbox but it looks really cool. I voted for:

  • A world map separated by mountains
  • Stricter control on Spellcasting (No spell creation, level requirements for spell ranks)
  • Storage Chest
  • Fewer quest markers
  • Unique Bosses with Unique Loot
  • Banks with interest savings accounts
  • Higher diversity in land areas
  • A small number of very dangerous dungeons explorable outside the main quest
  • A small number of massive dungeons

I'm pretty sure a lot of those things are going to be in anyway. :)

I hope that Bethesda have looked at Nehrim because there are some areas where Nehrim greatly surpasses Oblivion, particularly the hand-crafted dungeons and the inclusion of unique boss creatures.

Off the top of my head some of the highlights for me were:
- Steel Rail Mine, A nightmarish adventure in which you have to kill the final boss to escape.
- The Butcher, the most impressive and scary looking enemy i've seen in either game.
- A dryad(?) cave complex filled with blue lighting and strange plants. Beautiful, eerie and unlike anything i'd seen elsewhere in Nehrim or Oblivion.

Hmm . . .

I've played Nehrim and I respect and appreciate the time and effort that went into it. And I thought it was fun and I probably play it again some time. But . . .

Nehrim was clearly influenced by a lot of other mods that came before it. For example, the Bank of Cyrodiil mod was made before Nehrim and paid interest on savings. And I could go on but the point is Nehrim wasn't created in a vacuum. The real questions is where the Skyrim will be influenced by any of the mods created since Oblivion was released: FCOM, All Natural (Weather), nGCD/Progress, Real Hunger-Thirst-Fatigue-Sleep, Real Gold, and so on.

Should Skyrim be influence by mods? I think it already has been. But I seriously doubt that Bethesda will make any major lore changes based upon on a mod.
