Should new game mechanics be added to improve stealth?

Post » Sat Nov 28, 2015 12:08 am

Does anyone else think new mechanics should be added to improve stealth gameplay?

Maybe mechanics like throwing a bottlecap to distract raiders (Like in farcry 3 with the rocks,Metal Gear with the empty magazines,or that skyrim mod with the sound emitting arrows),wearing clothing that matches the environment to stay hidden (Metal Gear Solid 3),avoiding moving quickly on noisy surfaces (early thief games),breaking lightbulbs to create areas to sneak through (early splintercell games),or avoiding eye contact with enemies while disguised as their own (Hitman 2)?

Throwing a bottlecap sounds like a good feature. It imposes a small cost on the player and literally buys him some time. The impact noise will cause a distraction and most NPCs will bend over to pick it up.

I was a fan of the skyrim stealth system. It was simple, but not bare bones. I usually dont sneak in Fallout, but given quality environmental design, less noise and visually sensitive enemies plus some stealth kill animations, it could be amazing.

I mean for all we know they have already revamped the stealth system, they tweak it every game.

The vanilla stealth in Skyrim was amusing when you could stick an arrow in someone's eye, watch them run around looking for you, then go back to whatever they were doing with the arrow still sticking out of their head like nothing happened.

The system was improved with some mods, but, I dearly hope some more thought and effort has gone into it.

It'd also be nice if there were more incentive toward types of game play such that stealth didn't just equal a slower version of screaming minigun action and basically accomplish the same thing. In other words, it'd be nice to do stealth and be rewarded for it, as opposed to just killing the same amount of enemies a non stealth character would, along the same path, with the same goal.

Actually using stealth to sneak through areas without killing or alerting anyone should have rewards too.

Otherwise, it just kinda feels more like an after the fact add-in that's more role-play when every other style of play accomplishes the same exact thing where different styles of of play should somewhat impact the outcome and reaction to that style in different ways.

I'd absolutely love that mechanic to be in fallout 4, distracting the guards with bottle caps etc, that option should be consolidated for the players who like a more stealthy approach in their game. Sometimes its all guns blazing for me but I like to have the choice based on the situation.

In Fallout 3 new Vegas and Skyrim, sneaking is downright game breaking.

I can only hope that they have learn how to implement a simple and effective system by now.

I hope so, stealth gameplay is a ton of fun. Bethesda's games are really close to having great, if not lean, stealth gameplay; all I'd ask is a greater mind for stealth gameplay in some of the level design and AI. Like NPCs going on alert after discovering a corpse, or being able to crawl through or hide in narrow spaces and lean from cover (which would also benefit the FPS gameplay).

This. Just. Yes.
Different methods for different rewards.
Stealth in fallout is different to skyrim in the sence that luck and perks determined a critical hit chance so you didnt really need the guaranteed critical hit of stealth. Plenty times in new vegas i had built a character that was pretty much guaranteed a critical every 3rd bullet, which made killing ludicrously easy considering i invested hevily in vats aswell.
Fallout 4 seems to work around that with the "charge up" critical shown in the gameplay which, if the stealth has been revamped, could be either extremely fun or a burden.

So far though - i doubt people to play stealth given power armours overhaul, importance and custimisation. (Jetpacks and all!) Unless they made stealth oriented power armours.. But thats doubtful, they were described as wearable tanks in the fallout universe

Basically, if Bethesda consulted id and hired one of the senior designers from Bungie to help them improve their FPS gameplay, I hope they did the same thing with stealth and took a few hints from Arkane on how to build some freaking awesome stealth gameplay like Dishonored.

I mean, they hired Emil Pagliarulo (who formerly designed for the Thief franchise) back in Oblivion's development, and the result was that their games suddenly started having stealth gameplay.

I think it'll be improved but I'm keep my expectations low on stealth being improved. I'm hoping in addition to ID, they also communicated with Arkane about the combat and stealth too. They do need to be improved, I need to see it in order to believe it though.

I think aside from Fallout, Far Cry is one of my favorite game series. So, yeah I'd love to see things like distracting the enemy and climbing. Far Cry 4 is such a great game. I just wish it had more fleshed out NPCs and varied story line. It could easily be shifted into a great rpg.

Anyway, yes. Some things in Fallout - like the enemy not taking action about a dead npc I just killed has always bothered me. I really hope enemy AI is improved.

I think that if you hit a foe hard enough, he should *never* go back down from alert-search unless you completely leave the area. Same goes for any foe that finds a recently deceased comrade.

I'd be more happy if there were game play style modes that could be selected.

For instance, there could be Normal, Unarmed, Melee, Aggro, and Stealth modes to select from, and the player character posture, the way they walk, the way they run, the way they crouch, and the way they interact with and are perceived by NPCs could be effected and reflected by the mode selected, and more rewards given for the style selected.

A player in normal, stealth, aggro, and melee modes could still fight unarmed, but, their moves would be more stealth, more aggro, more melee, or more average normal weighted where if unarmed mode were selected for unarmed fighting, there might be some advantage, extra moves, and kill cam cinematics specifically for that.

Someone in stealth mode could then possibly have options, paths, and ways of getting around not open to the other modes, and essentially be acting stealthy when they're walking, running, or doing any activity instead of just a crouch toggle.

For someone in Aggro mode, crouch could mean something entirely different, and possibly charge stamina for a sprint, or body slamming move.

Eh. Mebbe someone could mod modes.

The sneak system in fallout and skyrim is actually pretty good for it seemingly simplistic one-button design.

Your skill in sneak, modified by range from enemy - how much you are carrying - the weight of armor - light (not in fallout though?) - enemy stats like perception. There are many logical factors counting into sneak. As an old "hardcoe rpg elitist" that hates dumbing down games and their RPG systems, I actually find sneaking in fallout to be pretty good.

I'm hoping for a better indicator. Hidden Caution and Danger are not really great for me. The Elder Scrolls Sneak system was better in this regard, as the "Eye" would be in various stages of opening indicating the enemies interest in you, and you can watch the eye close as the enemy loses interest in you. In Fallout, it's almost Binary in it's indicatiors.

I'm going to assume that you don't know what is stealth gameplay, haven't seen a stealth game and accidentally pressed buttons on your keyboard and happened form words out of random key presses.

@op the problems with steath are so massive that adding simple "coin toss" mechanics wont fix anything (also you could shoot arrows in skyrim the create the same effect).
