Should an Oblivion lover get Morrowind?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:23 pm

I never played a computer RPG before getting Oblivion a year and a half ago. It was instant love. I love the Elder Scrolls lore and have gotten totally obsessed with the Dunmer and Dunmer culture. Because of this obsession, I kind of want to check out Morrowind which I have never played or even seen. In fact if TES III had been about any other race or province I'd probably not even be tempted. Yet I am afraid that I will be turned off by it if it is too different than Oblivion. I won't mod it either, so if I do play it, it will be the vanilla game. Do you think I could love and obsess over it like I do Oblivion?

I haven't played Morrowind but from what I've heard its different. There are some good things about it and it has a really good main quest.

Considering it's only $8.49 on http://www.amazon.com/Elder-Scrolls-Morrowind-Game-Year-Pc/dp/B0000CNUUP right now I don't think there is a excuse not to play it.

You should probably read http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Morrowind_for_Oblivion_Players to get a idea of all the differences.

I agree especially with the stuff lying around in the different guilds as in Morrowind you can't just pick it up and take it.

If you like Dunmer and Dwemer lore, you'll fall deep, deep, deep in love with Morrowind. If you love TES lore and thought Oblivion rocked, you'll lose yourself in the mythical lands of Vvardenfell. Through the blighted ashlands, the wet bitter coast, the daedra-infested isles of Sheogorad... You'll fall deep in love.

All TES games are worth the experience. The first thing I am sure is gonna strike you is the awesome music. If there is one TES track that plays on me mind, it is that one (but then I am a music aficcionado). I have not played it much, though, wa aorking serious hours for weeks, months, years... Try it BUT read the "Morrwoind for Oblivion players" part of the guide:

Thank you for all of your suggestions! I read the "Morrowind for Oblivion players" and some things sound better and others don't (non-regenerating magicka...ouch!). Luckily I have some experience with the dice roll system of hitting and missing in combat since I have now also played DA:O. Also I was wondering...can I make a unique and good-looking character in Morrowind? I thought Oblivion was decent in this respect, but Morrowind is even older. If my PC is a Dunmer, do the others treat me as an outsider? Basically, do the Dunmer PCs from Morrowind (the game) come from somewhere else and so everything is just as new and alien to them as to any other race?

You only have about 5 faces/hairstyles to choose from for each six of each Race.... but there are many great mods that add hundreds of new faces to choose from.

If you play as a Dunmer you are still treated like an outlander, because you weren't born in Morrowind, you came from Cyrodiil.
Any NPC of the same Race as yourself will like you a bit more, but everyone is going to treat you like crap for a long time. You're a poor ex-convict, and no one wants you around :P

There are many different cultures to experience in Morrowind. The three Great Houses each have different lifestyles and architecture. There's also the Ashlander tribes, and the Nord's on Solstheim for more variety. So, yes... a Dunmer from Cyrodiil is going to see new sights.

An Oblivion lover should not buy Morrowind or Skyrim. Cross off the V numeral on that disc. There can be only one.

You're fine with dice-rolls? You'll be fine wiht Morrowind combat.

You'll be treated like an outlander too, you're from another province out west, always.

It's more like a pen and paper RPG in a 3d environment. It's a very good game but don't expect Oblivion with slightly downgraded graphics. It's fundamentally different.

Well how much graphics mean too you? You have to remember Morrowind is over 8 years old, so graphics are "dated", but the graphics were top notch over 8 years ago.
Morrowind is open 24 hours ( I think it's a good think most people think it's a bad thing, no more waiting for stores to open). Most or all NPC don't walk around and are
Stiff Paper Dolls.

Combat is based on skill. So even if you hit, you skill may not be enough to do damage. Also their skill in armour or what ever defese skill there is (been awhile I forget)
can lessen or negate the blow. There is levitate in the game. There is Mark and Recall spells in the game. Fast travel is not that good in Morrowind, I hated it, you can't
fast travel to where you want when you want.

Morrowind is a true roll playing game. Remember you can fail in Morrowind. In Oblivion you can never fail except for lockping mini game. There is no mini games in
Morrowind. Everything is skill based. It is also based on fatigue as well. So if you keep running all the time, your fatique will be a Zero and you will fail alot of magic
spells castings and will not "hit" or "damage" as much either.

Oh yeah, Morrowind doesn't hold your hand either. There is no compas to tell you where to go. A few times, not alot, Morrowind even gives you the wrong directions.
Someone will say go east when you are suppose to go west, but you have us on the forums to help you out. Morrowind can be hard. Just look at all the people who
couldn't find the "Puzzle Box". I am one of those as well. So it will show you how great Morrowind is, and doesn't follow all the way "fantasy" games are suppose to
work.

Actually, I hated the lack of fast travel in Morrowind too (I started with Daggerfall), but after a while you learn how to get around fast and it's not 'that' bad.

You have a teleportation spell, there are three teleportation services, you have the silt strider and you can take a boat.
It just takes a while to learn how to use them all efficiently.

NPC's don't really just stand in one place like everybody here seems to say. They have one area where they walk around, small or big.
Once I was suprised when I met Heddvild (Nord female) on the east side of Balmora, because she spend's most of she's time in west side of town.
Thought most of the NPC's who you can make business with stand in one place.

This. NPCs outdoors tend to do a fair bit of walking around, although you certainly will never have trouble tracking them down when you need to.

Oh man, you need to see the Fighters' Guilds in Morrowind. I believe in Balmora, there's these two characters that will spar with one another hand-to-hand on the bottom floor. It's kind of annoying nowadays for the combat music to kick in whenever you near them, but it was a really cool moment the first time I found them and certainly added to the dynamic nature of the world which now feels completely static compared to its successor.
