didn't you already buy them off steam? lol

fallout 1 and 2 are very different from fallout 3. most of fo3 (over 99%) really has nothing to do with the first two games. FONV on the other hand is the opposite. It is based heavily off of the original fo3 which was never released. In spirit FONV actually is fo3 becuase in direct story line it is the actual sequal to the first two games. I am not knocking fo3 though. FO3 was beautiful in many ways mainly in that it revived a cherished and wonderful game universe with success and we can now expect more sequels to come. Also with that aside fo3 featured the first actual battle between to Enclave and the BOS. While in Tactics the BOS Midwest chapter gets to fight everything imaginable there is a serious dearth of Enclave (presumably they were entirely eradicated in FO2 which is one of many reasons why FO3 is more of a stand alone spin off than a legitimate sequel).

FO1 & FO2 are very slow turn based games but there are a lot more options on how to handle situations and there are a lot of unique situations to handle. I put hundreds og hours into playing FO3 and still havent come close to the amount of time I spent playing FO2. But the old games require a lot more thought and skill and patience to play. They are not shooters either they are top down isometric turn based RPGs with a box in the corner for text. Sometimes if there is a lot of things going on the computer's combat turn can take several minutes even on a modern computer. Also walking across maps back and forth looking for tiny little switches that are not labeled or lit up can become tedious and there are a myriad of challenging puzzles that stump even veterans who have played before or those who have resorted to a guide (which I would urge unless you are good at asking lots of questions on these forums which everyone would love to answer). Overall they are very fun games and well worth your ten bucks and you should at least give them a shot.

I would recommend Fallout Tactics, however, which (although not very canon) has lots of interesting stuff going on, features the original VATS system where the game is real time until you hit stop and then you can issue commands to your squad and consider your tactical situation or just run through guns blazing a little like what you can do in FO3 or FONV. Also it was the first Fallout game to include an editor which, although takes some programming skills, allows you to make up your own maps, edit the game or create your own fallout world (which I ended up spending way more time doing than playing the game).

The days of those games are long gone but with the advent of Beth's classic version and genius sub licensing manuevers they are pretty easy to track down copies of these days which is good because you can't have mine...lol

Goris gave you a good run down and I would definetly say yes. I could go on and on about how awsome the old games are, have gotten quite a few of my friends hooked on 'em long before FO3 came out. Just be ready their a bit harder to get used to and are quite challenging at times, but they are the games most of us fell in love with.

For the love of God YES! Good luck getting it to work on Windows 7 though... There seriously needs to be a Fallout Anthology for PS3 and Xbox 360 with FO1, 2, Tactics, and Brotherhood of Steel. I'd pay $50 if I had to.

I will only agree on the condition that that last title be omitted. You wouldn't include Spaceballs along with a Star Wars collection would you?

For my money Fallout 1 and ESPECIALLY 2 are among the finest games ever made.

Black Isle really reached the utter pinnacle of the art of the traditional turn-based CRPG.

However if you're a modern gamer be aware that FO2 does not hold your hand, there is no scaling, it is possible to guild a gimped character build, and there are many, many potentials you might miss your first playthrough. Even more than FO3 and New Vegas FO2 tried to think of EVERYTHING you might want to do and implement it. I'm reminded of one quest where you have to kill someone (an NCR congressman actually if I recall) and you have like 10 different ways to do so, ranging from a rifle from a place no one can see you (risky!) to poison to inducing a heart attack with a super stimpack. Also, the depth of faction interaction would make NV blush. As politically tangled as the Strip is, it has NOTHING on Reno's five-family tangle of alliances and agenda.

There are enough secrets, in-jokes, references and viable strategies to try and factions to work for that I replayed it just a few weeks ago while I was waiting for NV to come out and still found new things I'd never seen or done before. I've probably logged a hundred hours in Fallout 2 and still love it.

It will be the best 10 bucks you ever spend, given how low prices for it are these days.

Also, if you like the universe, FO2 explains a TON of the "behind the scenes" history of important things from FO3 (some that got only passing mentions like FEV). In Fallout 1 you actually learn the story of FEV and the creation of the supermutants in the first place, and participate in the events leading directly to it all. FO2 had tons more backstory info than FO3 and NV, in the form of more vault diving than NV and even exploring intact US military bases and research installations and accessing consoles to learn the story of such things as the creation of Powered Armor, the birth of the supermutants, the cause of the war and the origins of everything from deathclaws to Jet to the founding of the Brotherhood of Steel. Though some contradicts FO3, by and large gamesas has given lavish attention to canon.

Aye. While I personally don't care for Fallout 2's love of pop culture references and cheeky humor, I do have to admit it's from Fallout 2 that the universe gets fleshed out. I'm playing through the original Fallout again, and it's very...bare bones...in regards to story. It's still a good game, but it's still the first game of the franchise.

The first game has a tight and concise story, it's probably a better story than FO2 but since I play FO2 pretty much every time I get a fallout kick, when I finally went back and replayed 1 I was shocked by how short it was.

Fallout 2 isn't quite as good at telling the story but it's got far more features, streamlined interface (IIRC you could only barter with 999 items at a time in FO1, a big hassle when you're trying to buy that 8,000 gun), and way more stuff, people, and locations.

In my experience, play Fallout 1 first just to get the basic command and idea of how one can battle ingame. The learning curve for playing Fallout 2 is very steep if ya skip Fallout 1 and play Fallout 2 first (in other word, those ants would eat ya alive if ya don't run back and forth).

I sadly admit to never hearing of Fallout prior to FO3 and I'm sure the folks over at nomutantsallowed would eat my alive for it. But I did buy the originals from amazon in that interplay 'trilogy'. They shipped me the UK version for some reason and it's called 'collection', was in Target the other day and saw a more polished looking box for the collection. Geez, how many different ways have they released it? Anyways, the UK version has no kids so I got a patch for that and also a patch that made it work in 32-bit color mode (otherwise as mentioned it looks strange on Windows 7 which must not properly support 256 colors)

I was about half way through it when NV came out and haven't gone back to play it, but I do enjoy what I played. Wasn't put off by the graphics at all, but the interface took a little while to get use to. It works though, and even though FO3 is quite a different game you'll recognize where that inspiration came from. As mention, NV has a lot more in common with the originals and you'll even recognize some of the ambient music in FO1&FO2 which is used in places for NV.

GoG swear all their games work on WIn 7. The CD versions have been known to have foibles.

You don't need to read anyone else's posts, I can sum this up quite easily:

YES YOU SHOULD!

Not at all the same type of game as 3 and NV (turn-based, 2D graphics) but they are every bit as fun

And you should play Tactics as well, but skip the one called Brotherhood of Steel.

Fallouts 1, 2, and Tactics are sold rather cheaply as the Fallout Trilogy on Steam.

Anyone have any idea how well they run on Windows 7?

For Windows 7, at least from Steam, they run but the colors are messed up. This is repairable by pulling up and leaving open your color settings window before starting (which basically causes Windows 7 to 'detect settings' for whatever program you're running)

Yeah I'd play them but I'll warn you both games are in a completely different universe then Fallouts 3 and New Vegas. Still they're both fun to play and they have that fallout feel that you'll get in Fallouts 3 and New Vegas.

...? No they aren't, all of the main Fallout games are set in the exact same fictional universe. Fallout 3 and New Vegas reference the events of Fallout 1/2 on numerous occasions.
