Should I play oblivion

Post » Fri Mar 13, 2015 8:25 am

Hey guys first time post on here and just wondering if I should play oblivion
I saw a copy today of the 5th anniversAry and was tempted I get it but decided not to (yet).
Basically skyrim was the 1st and only tes game I've played and really enjoyed it (still do) so basically was wondering if oblivion will add to the tes experience.

Any input would be great I expect the graphics to be a bit worse but not sure what else to expect?

I love skyrim just getting over the quest lines a bit.

And please no spoilers :)

You asked in the Oblivion forum so you are bound to get a chorus of voices praising Oblivion. Personally I prefer Oblivion to Skyrim because Oblivion has classes, attributes, more skills, more spells and spell making, a disposition system that can be manipulated by the player through speech or spells, fame and infamy, birthsigns, etc.

However many prefer Skyrim for its higher resolution graphics, grittier atmosphere (Oblivion, although beautiful in its own right, can be a bit cartoony and often downright corny), more modern and fluid combat, it's simpler character leveling (Oblivion's character leveling system can take a bit of getting used to) and it's more sophisticated world leveling (Oblivion's world leveling is a bit heavy handed).

Really, only you can decide. This link highlighs differences between the games and may be helpful. http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Differences_Between_Morrowind,_Oblivion,_and_Skyrim

Thanks I'll check put that link appreciate it
Also I assume many people playing skyrim never played oblivion (like myself) or just like better graphics

Just one add on question though I really disliked magic on skyrim (tried once) so not sure if I'd use a magic class

I am happy to explain Oblivion's magic system. What do you want to know about it? In general it works similarly to the system in Skyrim, but there is no dual casting. Instead there is a dedicated casting button. So you do not need to unequip your weapon to cast a spell.

Armor affects casting ability slightly.

There are tons more spells and spell effects, and the method of acquiring them is different.

I think Oblivion is worth every penny. I urge you to buy it - it's pretty cheap these days. You'll search long and hard to find a better video game for the money, in my opinion. But, as Turija says, you're bound to get positive responses here.

Each Elder Scrolls game is a little different. Each has its strong points and its weak points. None of them are perfect. But all of them, I think, are enjoyable.

You can snatch the game plus Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine for about $5 on Steam. Given the cost is about the same as a cheap meal that'd pass through you anyway, I'd say go for it.

Welcome to the forums Crippledtank. I would definitely recommend giving Oblivion a try and to also make sure you get the Shimmering Isles DLC if you can, imo it's the best DLC ever released for a game and an absolute must have.

For what Oblivion can be had for these days, it's definitely worth the cost of admission imo. In fact I waited to buy Skyrim until Steam had it for $13, and my honest opinion after playing both is that Oblivion was a much better deal at $50. Overall it's a better gaming experience imo, even with its inferior graphics etc.

I think Oblivion is to Skyrim what Morrowind is to Oblivion: if you value role playing over graphics quality then I recommend trying the older titles.

+1 to give Oblivion a chance.

You mentioned the magic system, because you don't cast it with your hands it is like using shouts to compare it to Skyrim.

As others have said a lot more variety in spell's, and you can create your own. I also found the hotkey to cycle between spells and weapons a lot better to use.

Hope you enjoy!

Yes! Get it! Now!

Even though the graphics are better in Skyrim, I generally prefer the look of Oblivion (Mainly because I prefer bright, vibrant landscapes) even though everyone goes on about how bland and generic the environment is... maybe I'm just a bland and generic person. Also, the levelling is a bit... odd. You'll see wolves at first, but when you level up they suddenly disappear forever and bears will replace them, then ogres will replace bears... and when you get to a high level there'll be bandits wandering around with glass armour... it's all slightly strange.

Don't let the flaws (which there are a fair few of) discourage you though as Oblivion is truly an excellent game! (Also, get the Shivering Isles DLC... it's really good!)

Oh yeah, if you're on PC, mods can fix most of the problems with the game. (like the levelling) Have fun!

This is weird thing about Oblivion and it's environment which is more about ones personal preference than ultimate truth. I have never found Oblivions environment to be a bland or generic. It's bright, leafy and colorful - very fantasy I would say, something which is hard to find anywhere in real world. Skyrims environment is more natural and less comfortable than Oblivions. So even Skyrim beats Oblivion with graphics and combat it can't beat the feel and look of Oblivions nature. Oblivion is for those who appreciate to see great views and pretty landscape.

Yeah give it a shot the main quest has a disapinting ending but the opening is good and there are lodes of things to see and di. i would think about getting the antholagy over any Specal edations of Oblivoin on it's own becas then you get skyrim yes but you also get Oblivion, Morrowind (a fan favorite) Daggerfall and Arena oh you also get all the DLC and bit's.

I really loved Oblivion becaus it was mt first ES experiance .

There are some other differences that can enhance roleplay. Because your character has a set of slowly-growing attributes, you can develop some abilities more than others. An athletic character can run faster, and an acrobatic character can jump higher.

Non-hybrid characters, like Mages or Thieves, are much more manageable in this game, even to high level. You can even play a no-weapons no-armor hand-to-hand fighting monk if you want.

And the magic system is more versatile. You can create your own spells and enchantments, as long as you've learned the spell effect. This makes mages incredibly powerful.
